New York to Boston Train Amtrak Acela Express Review

Yes, you can fly to New York Ive done it several times. But it isnt that much faster than the car-train combination and its a lot more expensive . As well as the usual air travel hurdles , youll face the added hassle of getting into Manhattan from your chosen airport. For a city where many residents dont have cars, New Yorks three airports are surprisingly poorly served by public transit. Sure, it exists, but its slow.

From Newark, for instance, many travellers take the Air Train to the nearby Newark airport train station, then switch onto an Amtrak or NJ Transit train to get to Manhattans PennStation, then catch a cab or subway to their hotel. If youre hauling luggage, it can be a bit of a pain. Alternatively, you can take a bus or splurge on a taxi, but those options can be even slower than the train, as youll need to travel into Manhattan via one of the citys many congested bridges or tunnels.

Tip: Try GO Airport Shuttle, which offers shared-ride shuttles, private vans, limousines and car services from all three of New York Citys airports.

How I Rolled On The Crescent: New York To New Orleans By Rail

  • Read in app

Everyone I told said the same thing: Oh, my God! Ive always wanted to do that!

The thing they had always wanted to do, apparently, was travel from New York to New Orleans by train. Or cross any considerable distance by rail distances typically flown over in the name of expedience. Old, young, man, woman, didnt matter. They had all long nursed, but never acted on, a wish to take the slow route.

I write about liquor. Every July, in New Orleans, there is a booze convention. Id gone every year, always by plane. Last summer, bored with the routine, I vowed to shake it up. I brought up the Amtrak website and discovered there was a line called the Crescent that followed the eastern corridor down to Washington, D.C., and then snaked through the South to New Orleans. It took 30 hours.

I had a day to spare. All that remained was to O.K. the plan with my travel companion. Oh, my God! she said. Ive always wanted to do that!

Despite our shared enthusiasm, part of me wondered if the trip was a good idea. Amtrak was regularly in the news, and not in a good way. A derailment here, a delay there. Penn Stations summer from hell was tabloid fodder. Had I booked myself a fantasy that bore no correlation to reality ?

A porter directed us to our car. We boarded and were immediately funneled into those narrow hallways that remind you of old movies.

For The Adrenalin Junkie: Car

Logically, theres absolutely no reason you cant drive directly from Ottawa to Manhattan. But Ive driven in Boston. Ive driven in L.A. and San Francisco. Heck, Ive driven in Montreal. In rush hour. But for many years, you could not have paid me enough to drive in Manhattan, where drivers appear to have two speeds: race car and stopped and honking. Parking, if you can find it, is heinously expensive. Every street is like a video game clogged with delivery vans, kamikaze cabbies, weaving cyclists and jaywalking pedestrians. I was nervous, to put it mildly.Booking.com

Then I signed up to do the Five Boro Bike Ride, an epic 64km ride through all five boroughs of New York City, and I wanted to bring my own bike. I thought about parking in Beacon, as described above, but the prospect of wrangling a bike and luggage on various commuter trains and subways seemed impractical. So I took a big breath, put on my big-girl shoes and drove straight into downtown Manhattan. In rush hour.

To be honest, it wasnt so bad. At that time of day, everyone just seemed resigned to the fact that they were going to be moving slowly. And since everyone was moving slowly, it wasnt too hair-raising to change lanes and make turns. I got to my hotel pretty smoothly, all things considered. And the hotel had inexpensive valet parking, at about US$25 a day. So once Id unloaded my bike and my gear, the nice valet handled the logistics of parking.
