New York Traditional Public Schools

Most children in New York attend traditional public schools. Traditional public schools are free to attend, open to all students, operated by school districts, and funded by taxpayers like you. Each year, New York spends an average of $25,139 per public school student. You can search your schools spending and that of nearby schools at Project Nickel.

In New York, each district decides whether it will participate in open enrollment. Open enrollment is a valuable choice that refers to whether parents can send their children to any public school, regardless of where it is located or what their zip code is. If you would like to participate in open enrollment, check with your local school district to see if this is available. If so, you can visit and select from a wider array of public schools. Public schools have different environments and mission statements, and one may be a better fit for your child than another.

If your homeschooling adventure comes to an end for any reason, you will need to know how to transfer from homeschool to public school. The first thing to do is to register with the public school your child will be attending. You may provide any records you wish to the school to help them better understand what level your child is working at, but ultimately it is the school principal who will determine what grade level to place your child into when he or she returns. It is also up to the individual schools to determine if your assessments and standardized tests are acceptable or if they will require your child to take additional placement testing upon registration.
