How To Use The Metro In New York

Can Two People Use One Pay

7 Tips on How to Use NYC Subway? | A Guide for Your Ride

I’m planning a three day trip to New York with my friend and I have done a small research on the their metro system and found out that it is better to go for either Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard or for Unlimited 7 day MetroCard.

So my question is, if I use “Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard”, does it only cost $2.75/ride for both of us? Because it states that “up to 4 people can use one Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard”.

Or do we need to swipe it twice which will us cost $5.50/ride?

  • YES, but both of you have to swipe/dip it to deduct the fare for each of you. Transfers will also work for both of you as well as the AirTrain at JFK.

Yes, up to 4 people can use one Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard.

So my question is, if I use “Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard”, does it only cost $2.75/ride for both of us? Because it states that “up to 4 people can use one Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard”.

One card can be used for 4 persons but it needs to be swiped 4 times and the cost will rise with each swipe. One swipe for 4 persons is a No No.

Or do we need to swipe it twice which will us cost $5.50/ride?

Yes. You are 2 people so the cost will be according to that. Here’s how you can use Pay-Per-Ride for the both of you.

Do Not buy 1 Unlimited ride card for 2 people, it will not work. It is for 1 person and can not be used more than once per 18 minutes at the same station. If you are considering buying Unlimited Ride card buy 1 for each person.

Can 1 Metrocard Be Used By 2 People

ive just read somewhere that if i buy a $24 Metrocard both my wife and i can use it for the duration of our stay ..is this correct?

regular metrocards can be used by two people since you are paying fares.

The ‘unlimited’ ride passes have an 18 minutes delay after being used before it can be used again.

So, if you want to wait 18 minutes before the second person can enter the gate, sure two people can use it.

But if you want to enter the station at the same time two people cannot use the same card.

If you purchase a pay per ride Metrocard your wife and you can use the same card. You can place anywhere from $4 to $80 on the card.

For every $10 placed on the card you get $12 worth of rides, $20 placed on the card gets you $24 worth of rides

Each ride costs $2 and card is good on subways and buses, Free transfers are allowed subway to bus, bus to subway and bus to bus.

If your question means “If I buy a 7-day unlimited MetroCard for $24, can two people use it?”, the answer is really “NO”.

If you buy unlimited MetroCards, each person should have his or her own.

Now, if you were asking “If I put any amount on a pay-per-ride, Regular MetroCard, and suppose I make that amount $24, can two people use it?”, the answe to THAT question — which is a very different question!! — is “YES — 2, or 4, or 6, or however many people can share a pay-per-ride card it is only the Unlimited cards taht can’t be shared.”

Does that answer the question?

Five months after the coronavirus outbreak engulfed New York City, riders are still staying away from public transportation in enormous numbers, often because they are concerned that sharing enclosed places with strangers is simply too dangerous.

But the picture emerging in major cities across the world suggests that public transportation may not be as risky as nervous New Yorkers believe.

In countries where the pandemic has ebbed, ridership has rebounded in far greater numbers than in New York City yet there have been no notable superspreader events linked to mass transit, according to a survey of transportation agencies conducted by The New York Times.

Those findings could be evidence that subways, commuter railways and buses may not be a significant source of transmission, as long as riders wear masks and train cars or buses never become as intensely crowded as they did in pre-pandemic rush hours.

In Paris, public health authorities conducting contact tracing found that none of the 386 infection clusters identified between early May and mid-July were linked to the citys public transportation.

Safety On The Nyc Subway

Safety is the responsibility of the New York City Transit Police. Following the 2005 bombings on the London metro, the New York City Transit Police increased their security and randomly search passenger’s bags. They have kept the metro free from terrorist attacks and one can ride the metro in confidence. They have foiled planned attacks in the past – including Najibullah Zazi and others in 2009. Buying A New York Metrocard

Here you are in the subway station. Head to the vending machines to buy your subway ticket . If needed, its possible to change the language of the vending machine. Anyway, the vending machine is first going to ask you if you want to get a new card or refill your card.

If you want to buy a new card, youll be able to:

  • buy a single ride ticket, its $2.75. The ticket is valid for two hours after its first use. I suggest you not buy one cause youre gonna take the subway very often in New York. Its gonna get expensive buying numerous single ride tickets!
  • buy a pay-per-ride metrocard. You refill your card with the desired amount and theyll debit $2.75 from the balance everytime youll take the subway. Unless you stay three days or less , I dont recommend buying one. Youll lose money, youll always take the subway! However, you need to know one pay -per-ride metrocard can be used by up to 4 people!
  • finally, youll be able to buy an unlimited metrocard. Thats the one I recommend buying! Its $32 dollars for a week and youll be able to use the subway as often as you want for seven days! Take the subway at least 12 times in one week and youll make the metrocard profitable. Theres a $1 fee the first time youre buying a metrocard.

Dont even try to cheat, youll face a huge fine and if youre not a US citizen, they may send you back to your country of origin! But kids measuring up to 44 inches can take the subway for free, no matter how old they are.

A Brief History Of The Nyc Subway

Governor, NYPD propose banning sex predators from using ...

The subway system as we know it started running on October 27, 1904, but New Yorks experiment with mass transit began 77 years earlier. In 1827, Abraham Brower began running a horse-drawn bus that could hold 12 people, which he called Accommodation, on Broadway.

Other attempts followedincluding, famously, Alfred Ely Beachs pneumatic tube that propelled people along a quarter-mile of track below City Hallbut it wasnt until the 1870s, when the first elevated trains began running on the west side of Manhattan, that the citys transit revolution truly began.

The el, as it was known, altered the look of New York so greatly that its hard to envision how radically the streetscape of the city changed in such a short time, as James Nevius writes in his history of the el. Other, less transformative modes of rapid transit, including electric trolleys and cable-power rail , soon followed. The el also brought people into the outer boroughs, and thus had a hand in expanding development outside Manhattan.

But after the subway opened and city denizens grew accustomed to underground rail, the elevated trainswhich were noisy, cast shadows on the street, and spewed dust into the airbecame less popular, and they were all but dead by the mid-20th century.

Q: How Far Is Nj To From Nyc

Answer: It only takes 10 minutes to get from NJ to NYC via Ferry or the PATH subway. New Jersey and NYC is separated by the Hudson River from NYC . The area with the most options for transit into NYC is Jersey City. Often its popular for people to buy parking in advance and park in Jersey City for a day trip to NYC.

Connection With New Jersey

The competition between New Jersey and New York City is well known and the New York City subway system does not cross state lines and connect with New Jersey. But that doesn’t mean that they aren’t connected with public transport. Connecting their two metro systems is the responsibility of the Port Authority Trans-Hudson . This connects Newark, Harrison, Jersey City, and Hoboken with Lower and Midtown Manhattan.

Like the NYC Subway, it runs round the clock all year long and it connects the two systems crossing the Hudson River.

An Important Note On The Size Of Grand Central Terminal

How to Ride the New York City Subway

Grand Central Terminal is LARGE. And it can be confusing if youve never been there.

Leave yourself plenty of time to arrive, buy tickets and potentially wait in line if you need to clarify the tickets you need at a ticket window instead of a machine, discover which platform your train is leaving from and then time to walk there.

And if youre touring New York City and youve never been to GCT be sure to allot time to see it. Because its really impressive and beautiful! Its one of my favorite places in NYC.

Our suggestion is to book a Secrets of Grand Central Tour for another day or before you head to your destination on Metro-North Railroad. The one and a half hour tour is very affordable and shares SO MUCH information about GCT, including why its a NYC icon and how it was restored years ago. Its fascinating!

Two Practical Examples Of Navigating The Subway

Example #1: You want to go from your hotel, the Casablanca in Times Square, to the 9/11 Memorial

Open Google Maps on your phone, tablet or computer.

  • Type in your hotel name . You will now see the closest subway stations indicated with the M icon. Zoom in to see which subway lines stop at that particular station. For example, Times Sq 42nd St tells you that the 1, 2, and 3 lines stop there.
  • Now click on the Directions icon . Choose the train icon, which represents Transit, then click on the opposite arrows icon to reverse direction. Then type in 9/11 Memorial as your destination. Your screen should look something like this:
  • 5. By default, Google gives you the best route on top, which is determined by total commute time, number of transfers, and walking distance. To view this route, click Details under the top choice. Here is what you will see:

As you can see from the map, the 9/11 Memorial is almost all the way at the bottom of Manhattan island, so to get there from the Casablanca Hotel, you would need to take the subway Downtown . To be exact, the subway signage you need to look for will say Downtown & Brooklyn which just means that the train is heading south in Manhattan, then going into Brooklyn.

According to Google Maps, your total commute would be around 17 minutes and would combine using the subway and walking.

    Quick note:

How Do I Know How Much Time/money Is Left On My Metrocard

    • When you swipe a Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard through a Subway turnstile, you will see the remaining balance displayed.
    • MetroCard Readers are available at Station Booths and in Subway Stations and if you scan your card through, it will display the expiration date for Unlimited Ride fare, as well as the remaining balance on your Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard.

Q: How Do I Get From Hoboken Nj To Nyc

Answer: The most practical and popular way to get from Hoboken to NYC is to take the PATH subway which runs nearly 24/7. The PATH is $2.75 per ride and can drop you off as close as one block from the Empire State Building. It will take less than 20 minutes to get from Hoboken to NYC on the PATH. The other alternative is the Ferry which costs $9. Ferry hours are more limited, so if you plan on staying out late in NYC you may want to take the PATH back.
