Launch The Service Make Sure No One Notices
The prep work we did allowed us to move extremely quickly to rebuild the service, spin up the new infrastructure and create a solid deployment pipeline.
The next step was to launch, but we wanted to make sure we did it right to avoid a high-stress and high-stakes situation. We couldnt afford to have our launch end up like Indiana Jones trying to snatch the idol treasure in Raiders of the Lost Ark, so we came up with a tactical approach.
Our challenge was to guarantee the new Meter Service performs at par or better than the old service, and to ensure the response is identical between the two services for every user. To achieve this, we had both services run simultaneously, though the new service didnt impact users at first. We called this our dark rollout.
How To Bypass The New York Times Paywall And Read Nytimescom Articles For Free
Recently, NYTimes.com launched a much ballyhooed rollout of its digital subscription in an attempt to monetize its online content without compromising the discoverability of NYTimes.com via search engines. Essentially, the New York Times lets you access 20 articles for free via major search engines before it asks you to pony up for unlimited access. When you reach your 20 article limit, youll see this splash screen:
You can get rid of this nagging window in one of two ways:
1. Pay about $15 a month for access from your computer and/or smartphone or tablet.
2. Go to your address bar and delete the numbers that come after the gwh= portion of the URL and press Enter.
That was easy, huh?
You can also bypass the NYTimes.com paywall by going into Incognito Mode or Private Browsing mode, clearing your browser cookies or simply using another browser.
Request For Comments Process
The Times engineering group believes strongly in the Request for Comments process because it helps bring visibility to a major architectural change and engages colleagues in decision making. An RFC is not very complicated it is simply a technical document that proposes a detailed solution to a specific problem. We shared our RFC with all of our colleagues in the Technology department and asked for their feedback.
Before we started coding, we spent several weeks preparing a couple of RFCs that outlined our plan to rewrite the Meter Service. This included documenting the current system and dependencies, analysis of multiple proofs of concept and creating clear architectural diagrams of our new solution. In the end, we were able to tighten up our plan and identify possible edge cases that we hadnt thought through. The time it took to solicit feedback was worth it.

Read Any New York Times Article For Free
The New York Times recently put up their paywall, blocking users from reading over a certain number of articles a month. Their pricing scheme is sort of a mess but I can understand charging for quality content. Thats not really the point though, their paywall implementation makes it difficult for paying users to share content with nonpaying users. For instance, if youre a paying iPad customer and you send an instant message to your friend with an article, and they already hit their monthly allowance, well, tough, they cant read the article or can they?
Online Access To The New York Times
The New York Times for online access to its current issue. Non-subscribers have access to 10 articles per month before being asked to pay.
All of CUNY has access to the current content of the New York Times through LexisNexis, but this database does not have a browse function. The content of the New York Times can be searched in LexisNexis from 1980 to the present.

The content of each issue of the New York Times from 1985 to the present can be accessed in Academic OneFile, but this database lags one day behind the print/online New York Times.

Get Around The Times Paywall By Clearing Cookies
The New York Times currently uses browser cookies, and not IP addresses, to keep track of how many articles you have read on their online website. That means if you are reading the NYT articles in Google Chrome and then switch to Firefox or IE, the limit is reset to zero because cookies arent shared across browsers.
If you would like to stick with one browser, you can still get around the NYT paywall by clearing the cookies that are associated with nytimes.com . All web browsers let you remove cookies through their Privacy settings but a easier way to get this done is through a cookie bookmarklet.
To get started, drag and drop the following Paywall bookmarklet to your browsers favorites bar. Then open any story on the New York Times website and hit the bookmarklet to reset your read counter to zero.

You should only run the bookmarklet while you are on a page of nytimes.com. If you would like to know whether the cookies have been successfully cleared or not, copy-paste the following code into your browsers address and hit enter.

The browser may also be set to completely disallow cookies from the nytimes.com domain but that wont work because The New York Times website requires cookies.
Three Ways To Bypass The Ny Times Payment Wall
There are a variety of approaches that have been used to and most of these have been discussed at length online like ny times paywall user script etc. But here are three surefire ways that I know never fail to work, and where most websites, such as The New York Times, have no restrictions.
1. Using mobile apps data technique:
Typically, The New York Times, just like any other leading publication, lets you read five articles free every month, which is better known as a metered payment wall approach. This is different from a hard payment wall that prevents readers from viewing any content without a subscription.
Especially in the context of The New York Times metered payment wall, if theres an additional article that you would like to read, you can reset your count after clearing your history. In the days since Democrats were battered in elections across the country last week, criticism of the partys policies and electoral strategies has rained down, alongside dire forecasts of its prospects in the 2022 midterms. The flagellation has come not just from gleeful Republicans, but from many in the Democratic ranks.
Reasons put forward for the partys losses included President Bidens slipping approval in polls, impressions of a party that is incompetent at governing after months of infighting in Congress, rising inflation and crime in big cities, and tin-eared Democratic campaigns.
One of the least envied jobs in politics at the moment belongs to Representative Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, who as chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee must steer his caucus through the extremely choppy midterm waters. Mr. Bidens approval numbers are lower than President Barack Obamas were at the same point in his first term, ahead of the 2010 midterms when Democrats lost more than 60 House seats.
My message is free Joe Biden. That campaign needs to start now before the next crisis takes over the news cycle.

Beyond The Paywall: Reading New York Times Articles For Free
Using the magic of Google we can read New York Times articles for free. It takes about two seconds, here are the steps:
- Find the title of the article you want to read
- Open google.com and type in the general title followed by nytimes.com and search
The top result is pretty much guaranteed to be the article youre looking for. Lets use an example someone wants to read the full NYT book review of Physics of the Future and we know the book is written by Michale Kaku, so my Google query to skirt the NYT paywall is this: physics of future kaku nytimes.com the key is here to include nytimes.com at the end of the search time. Let Google do their magic and low and behold:
The first result is the Times book review we wanted to read. Great huh?
Even Faster: Paste the NYTimes.com URL into GoogleIf youre sharing an exact URL with someone who hit their article limit, have them paste that directly into Google too. Then they just need to click on Im Feeling Lucky and theyll get pushed right beyond the paywall.Important Note: None of this is doing anything shady or against the NYT sharing policy, its just utilizing a clause that the Times mentioned in their announcement of the paywall:

The Infrastructure Bill At A Glance
The bill receives final approval.The House passed a $1 trillion bill on Nov. 5 to rebuild the countrys aging public works system. The proposal is a central plank of President Bidens economic agenda, and he is expected to quickly sign it into law. Here whats inside the bill:
Transportation.The proposal would see tens of billions of dollars in new federal spending going to roads, bridges and transportation programs. Amtrak would see its biggest infusion of money since its inception, and funds would be allocated to programs intended to provide safe commutes for pedestrians.
Climate.Funding would be provided to better prepare the country to face global warming. The Forest Service would get billions of dollars to reduce the effects of wildfires. The bill includes $73 billion to modernize the nations electricity grid to allow it to carry renewable energy.
Resources for underserved communities.A new $2 billion grant program is expected to expand transportation projects in rural areas. The bill would also increase support for Native American communities, allotting $216 million to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for climate-resilience and adaptation efforts.

Technology As The Connecting Tool
Technology so far has been a major connecting tool amongst us humans. It is used and appreciated by all regardless of race, language and sex. In order to keep it less subjective to these arguments about human biases. I believe we should gather opinions on products and solutions before making them available to the public. This could be done by gathering input from intended target users and receiving feedback across the stages of production.
Recognizing the problem is a startsuccess will depend on inclusive technologies that meet this vast untapped market. This cannot be more apt especially at a time when we look up to technology for solutions. We should not muzzle our progress with technology by battling algorithm bias. Setting Up A Dark Rollout
The graphic above shows the call to the legacy service and the additional silent call we added to the web client that went to the new service. The call was non-blocking and had no impact on the actual user experience. The responses received from each service were tracked and compared, and we used this opportunity to load-test the new service to see how well it performed during real news-related traffic spikes.
The benefit of this approach was that the legacy service was still functioning throughout, which meant we had the freedom to modify the new service without worrying about impacting users. We could even take it down if we needed to make configuration changes to the infrastructure, such as auto-scaling policies or instance sizes. We let this run for a couple weeks until we ironed out the last bugs and felt confident that we could proceed with a phased rollout.

But the sustained numbers of severe cases have put such a strain on Singapores health care system that officials said they would expand the overall hospital capacity to 4,000 hospital beds from 2,500 by the end of the month.
Most Covid patients vulnerable to severe illness and requiring intensive care are people ages 60 and over, Mr. Puthucheary said. At least 6 percent of people 60 and over in Singapore have yet to get shots, according to the Health Ministry.
