With the swipe of a MetroCard, the Roosevelt Island Tram gives you an aerial view of Midtown East along its path from East 60th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan to Roosevelt Island, located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens. The tram got its start in 1976. It provides direct service seven days a week for more than 2 million riders annually, with free transfers available to and from MTA subways and buses. Also do we need to pre-book or what is the protocol at JFK on arrival? Is there a taxi rank? A booking desk etc?
I am not sure if you guys get dodgy cabs Just concious as first time in NY and don’t want to get ripped off.
Whats the alternative to a taxi also? Train to central NY? Is that too much hassle for 3 people with luggage?

As long as you have wheels on your cases take the air train and subway, it’ll be so much cheaper. If you buy a 7 day metro card for $30 it will still work out cheaper and you can use it throuhout your trip. I got my monies worth in a day and a half as the rides are $2.50 a go.
It’s my understanding that taxis have a fixed price from the airport to most parts in the city. Something around $52 plus tolls. It is rare that you will find a “fast meter” like you do in some parts of Europe. But the taxi driver may take you on a long trip, much longer than necessary in order to increase the fare.
A taxi from JFK to Times Square will cost $65-$70 including tolls, tax and tip.
If you choose to get a taxi make sure you go to the official taxi line, ignore anyone who approaches you asking if you need a ride.
Just avoid anyone asking if you need a ride and go to the official line.
Sam, the fare from JFK to Manhattan is $52 plus tolls and tip. There is absolutely NO incentive for a driver on a flat fare to do anything but get you to your hotel as soon as possible.
It’s a fixed fare – no need to ask.

Example #1: You want to go from your hotel, the Casablanca in Times Square, to the 9/11 Memorial
Open Google Maps on your phone, tablet or computer.

As you can see from the map, the 9/11 Memorial is almost all the way at the bottom of Manhattan island, so to get there from the Casablanca Hotel, you would need to take the subway Downtown . To be exact, the subway signage you need to look for will say Downtown & Brooklyn which just means that the train is heading south in Manhattan, then going into Brooklyn.
According to Google Maps, your total commute would be around 17 minutes and would combine using the subway and walking.

If your layover is longer than 5 or 6 hours, then you may have time to make it to Manhattan and back. Depending on the weather, both Central Park and the Museum of Modern Art are great for stretching your legs before your next flight. The MOMA is accessible by following the above 14th Street instructions to 5th Av/53th St. Central Park is then an easy 6-block walk north along the citys famous 5th Avenue. The History Of Penn Station
Penn Stations current iteration dates back to 1968, when the train station as we know it opened beneath the then-new Madison Square Garden. Of course, its not the first Penn Station the original train depot was a grand behemoth designed by McKim, Mead & White that took up two city blocks.
It was considered to be largely the work of Charles McKim, who took inspiration from the nascent city beautiful movement and Roman architecture to craft a public building the likes of which hadnt been seen before. The materials alone were sensational: the exterior was covered in pink Milford granite and lined with dozens of Doric columns, while the interior was dripping in marble. There was an enormous concourse modeled after Romes Baths of Caracalla, while the soaring steel-festooned waiting room was a grand, airy space. As the late art historian Hillary Ballon put it, Penn Station did not make you feel comfortable it made you feel important.
But nothing gold can stay, and Penn Stations demise came just 50 years after it opened. The outcry over its demolitiondone so because the Pennsylvania Railroad, which owned the station, sold the air rights to the highest bidderwas one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, and also led to one of legendary archicritic Ada Louise Huxtables most enduring burns:
The old Penn Station was gone by 1965, and the one we use today opened three years later.

Step away from the edge of the platform. Platforms are often crowded and there are a lot of New Yorkers in a rush to get somewhere. The last thing you want is to have to climb out of the tracks with an oncoming train blinding you with its lights. Dont become a statistic, as they say. Or a deer in headlights.
If you see a mostly empty subway car during rush hour, or one with all the people crowded to one side, there is probably a good reason for it. So unless you have no sense of smell, then hustle over to the next car before the doors close. How Long Is The Train Ride
The comfortable train ride from New York City to Atlantic City takes at least three hours, 45 minutes . However, it isn’t the easiest option as you’ll need to travel to Philadelphia‘s 30th Street Train Station from New York Penn Station with Amtrak . Passengers will then transfer to the NJ Transit service and head to the Atlantic City Rail Terminal about half a mile from the Atlantic City Boardwalk. You can purchase tickets in advance with Amtrak or NJ Transit, or in person at Penn Station.

Amtrak Silver Service Route
The Amtrak train route from Florida is especially picturesque in winter, even better further north if theres a dusting of snow. The train rolls past what looks like a scene from a Thomas Kincaid painting singularly lit little houses and storefronts, no more than maybe two dozen yards away from the tracks. Its almost like you were suddenly transported to the middle of a toy train set, one that was carefully assembled in a cozy living room over the winter holidays. Its all too quaint.
Since our train from Florida was scheduled to arrive into New York City just a little before eight oclock, there wasnt dinner service. The Club Car would serve lighter fare. The crew had to break everything down, tally up and clean up before reaching New Yorks historic Pennsylvania Station. The past eighteen hours seemed like an eat-a-thon anyway, so I wasnt hungry. And it would give me something to do in NYC find a restaurant with take-out, close to the hotel.
Note again that the Silver Star doesnt have a dining car anymore. But you will have the above-described food fest on the Silver Meteor.
When Is The Best Time To Travel To Atlantic City
Visitors can enjoy Atlantic City and its casinos at any time of year. In terms of weather, one of the nicest times to take a trip to America’s Playground is from March to May. Held annually in April, The Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival is a fun three-day event featuring a silent disco, costume contests, and more . The Amtrak Dining Car
As for table-mates, I lucked out. I was seated with three other solo women travelers. One woman in her mid-sixties, was headed to New York to rendezvous with her new boyfriend that she reconnected with at their 40th high school reunion. Of the other two across from us, one was rather quiet and left for her sleeper right after coffee. So the three of us closed the diner!

Is There A Bus That Goes From Newark Airport To Manhattan
