If you worry about your loved one being on their own but dont need or want to move them to a nursing facility home health aides can offer much-needed support.

However, home health aides cannot provide medical or skilled nursing care. For example, a home health aide can remind you to take your medications on schedule, but they cant administer the medications.

What A Home Health Aide Does

The daily duties of a home health aide are many, and they generally include tasks like monitoring vitals, administering prescribed medications, assisting with personal hygiene, helping patients dress and groom, replacing sterile dressings, and even preparing meals. Advanced HHAs may even be tasked with helping the patient use specialized medical equipment .

Because the family and friends of elderly or ill persons cannot always take on the responsibilities of caring for their loved one, home health aides very commonly work with homebound seniors or recently discharged hospital patients.

A home health aide in NYC is not always in charge of caring for an older adult. One can provide assistance to anyone who needs it, from a person with a chronic illness to someone with a permanent disability or cognitive impairment. With preparation at home health aide schools, these professionals emerge from a program equipped to:

  • Help clients with daily personal tasks at home.
  • Follow the clients care plan and report on progress.
  • Tend to laundry, vacuuming, and other housekeeping activities.
  • Manage the clients schedule and doctors appointments.
  • Arrange transportation to medical offices and other locations.
  • Handle grocery shopping and meal preparation.
  • Help clients maintain their social connections.
