Are The New York Mets Playing Tonight

Mets’ Pete Alonso: Slugs Two Long Balls

MLB Price Check | Can Tony Gonsolin Have a Strong Night Against the New York Mets?

Alonso went 3-for-5 with two home runs, two runs and five RBI in a 9-4 win against the Mets on Saturday.

Alonso gave New York the lead for good with his two-run shot in the third inning, added a three-run bomb in the seventh and singled in the ninth for his second straight game with a home run. Four of the 27-year-old’s last six hits have left the yard and he pulled into a tie with Mookie Betts for the NL lead at 16 while tying Jose Ramirez for the MLB lead with 53 RBI. Alonso is on pace for a career high in average and OBP with a .285/.363/.556 slash line through 55 contests.

Mets’ Francisco Lindor: Playing Through Finger Injury

Lindor is starting at shortstop and batting third Friday against the Dodgers.

Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Lindor has a small fracture in his finger but it’s something he can play through once the swelling went down. Even so, it’s a little surprising he isn’t in as the designated hitter, but perhaps that’s a testament to how minor the fracture is.

Mets’ Max Scherzer: Bitten By Dog On Non

Scherzer was recently bitten by one of his dogs on his non-pitching hand, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Scherzer has been progressing in his rehab from his oblique strain as expected, and the Mets don’t anticipate that the right-hander’s hand issue will delay his recovery timetable. The 37-year-old’s recovery timetable initially put him on track to return in early July, but he could be in the mix to rejoin the Mets’ rotation before then given the encouraging progress he made prior to being bitten by his dog.

Mets’ Jacob Degrom: Throws Bullpen Saturday

DeGrom threw a 19-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

DeGrom’s bullpen session Saturday was the first time he threw off a mound since spring training, and he threw 19 fastballs at moderate intensity. The right-hander was throwing off flat ground for several weeks, and he’ll now shift his focus to ramping up his intensity. While Saturday’s bullpen session was a significant step in the right direction for deGrom, he still has several hurdles to clear before he’s in the mix to rejoin the Mets’ rotation.

Mets’ Trevor Williams: Submits Five Solid Frames

Tonight is an absolutely massive game for the New York Mets

Williams didn’t factor into the decision during Sunday’s 5-4 win against the Dodgers, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Williams calmed down after surrendering a two-run Trea Turner home run in the first inning to keep Los Angeles off the board while excelling with five whiffs in five innings. The 30-year-old has now limited the damage to two runs or fewer in five of his last six appearances, dropping his ERA from 8.59 to 3.58. Williams is scheduled to pitch again next weekend against the Angels.

New York Mets Option Dominic Smith To Minor Leagues

  • Publish date: May 31, 2022

NEW YORK — The New York Mets made a significant roster move Tuesday, optioning first baseman/DH Dominic Smith to Triple A Syracuse.

Based off his struggles offensively, the move isnt all that surprising as Smith has a .186/.287/.256 triple slash, zero home runs and 14 RBIs across 39 games this season. But the 26-year-old has been a mainstay on the Mets big-league roster since 2019, and New York had high hopes that the former first round pick would be able to bounce back this season after an underwhelming and injury-plagued 2021 campaign.

Unfortunately, things havent played out that way following a red-hot spring training. Smith was able to save his roster spot on May 1 with a 4-for-4 performance against the Phillies, which cost Robinson Cano his place on the team, but has since gone an ice cold 6-for-46 while playing at an irregular rate.

Prior to Tuesday night’s matchup with the Nationals, manager Buck Showalter spoke about what went into the decision to send Smith down.

“Primarily, we need a pitcher,” Showalter said. “We aren’t going to put our bullpen in harms way after some short starts. We’re just going to try to keep everybody healthy down there and Dom was the option we ended up with.”

“He has had over 100 plate appearances, it will give him a chance to get back to the things that we know he is capable of. Hopefully he can do thatI have a lot of confidence that he willand get him back up here helping us.”

How Mets’ Brandon Nimmo Is Adjusting To Playing Through Wrist Injury

  • Publish date: Jun 4, 2022

LOS ANGELES – After sitting out four games to rest his sprained wrist on the New York Mets’ previous home stand, centerfielder Brandon Nimmo has struggled to find his footing at the plate since re-entering the lineup.

But on Saturday night against the Dodgers, Nimmo broke out of an 0-for-13 slump with two hits and was on base a total of three times with two runs scored. He credits this bounce-back performance to the previous game, where he figured out a path to swinging pain free.

“Ive kind of had to try to find out the last three games what I can tolerate at game speed,” Nimmo told Inside the Mets in the Dodgers’ visiting dugout on Saturday. ” I found out a way – and just from the shot working and everything – to play without the pain to be able to take my normal swings.”

Nimmo had a swing-and-miss that normally bothered his wrist, but it didnt leave him in pain on Friday.

That was a big confidence builder, which was the important part for me,” Nimmo said.

This discovery allowed the 29-year-old to be able to focus on his plan at the plate in his final two at-bats of the Mets 6-1 loss to the Dodgers on Friday night, as opposed to worrying about experiencing pain while swinging the bat.

That part for me was the big obstacle to overcome, so Im expecting better things moving forward,” he said.

Itll continue to heal and get back to 100% in the coming weeks, but for now I feel good about where we are at moving forward,” Nimmo said.

New York Yankees +600

The Yankees were expected to be good but the Bronx Bombers have been downright dominant so far this season. New York has the best record in the American League and a 6.5-game lead in the competitive AL East.

The biggest reason for the Yankees early-season success has been pitching. We knew New York could smash, but the starting pitching has exceeded preseason expectations. Nestor Cortes, Gerrit Cole and Luis Severino are a combined 14-3 with a 2.41 ERA. Cortes and Cole are two of the favorites to win the American League Cy Young Award at +700.

With early injuries to the bullpen, the Yankees needed their starters to step up. Mission accomplished. Entering Sunday, New York ranked first in ERA , WHIP , batting average against and home runs allowed . That kind of starting pitching is tough to beat in the playoffs.

Of course, the Yankees can still score runs too. Led by MVP candidate Aaron Judge , New York ranks top 15 in every major statistical offensive category other than stolen bases. Unlike previous seasons though, the Yankees are built to win games when the offense isnt scoring a lot of runs, which makes them even more dangerous in the postseason.

Mets’ Tylor Megill: Making Rehab Start Sunday

Your Tuesday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links.

Megill will make a rehab start with Double-A Binghamton on Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

He is expected to pitch four innings if all goes well. Megill last pitched May 11 and it is unclear how many rehab starts he will need before rejoining the rotation. That said, the fact he will try to throw four frames and is being sent to an advanced affiliate suggests he may only need a couple rehab starts.

Mets’ Chris Bassitt: Takes Loss In Quality Start

Bassitt took the loss during Friday’s 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings.

Bassitt made two mistakes in serving up homers to Cody Bellinger and Zach McKinstry to fall behind early, and New York was never able to recover. Despite the loss, the 32-year-old came away with some positives by firing a season-high 110 pitches and matching a season best with eight strikeouts. Bassitt will carry a 3.74 ERA and 1.17 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for midweek against San Diego.

The Weather Will Play A Big Factor In The Big Apple

Happy Wednesday! I know we’re in the midst of the NBA and NHL playoffs, and we have MLB and WNBA underway, and of course, the NFL never stops, but my editors will be thrilled to learn that the only thing on my mind right now is Italian soccer.

Things are going a bit crazy in Italy at the moment! On Wednesday, it was announced that Antonio Conte, the manager at Inter Milan, which just won Italy’s Serie A , is leaving the club. Apparently, he’s upset that the team needs to sell a bunch of players to make up for lost money, and he thinks they should be spending more, so he’s out.

We’re now looking at a situation where five of the top seven teams in Serie A could have new managers next season, which, even in soccer, is a lot of managerial turnover. So I’ve spent the majority of my morning and early afternoon trying to figure out what it’ll all look like when the dust settles. While I continue doing that, you should catch up on these other stories that are probably far more interesting to you than Italian soccer.

All right, so I didn’t spend all day thinking about Serie A. I spent some of it getting these picks ready too.

Latest Yankees And Mets World Series Odds After Dominant Starts

LOS ANGELES Francisco Lindor literally gave the double doors in his hotel room The Finger, leaving the Mets suddenly surging shortstop on the bench for the first game of this measuring-stick series against the Dodgers.

Manager Buck Showalter said Lindor caught his right middle finger in the doors after the Mets arrival in town Wednesday night. Luis Guillorme started at shortstop on Thursday night.

There was some thought Lindor might be available off the bench, but Showalter didnt want to broadcast the teams plans prior to first pitch. Lindor said swelling in the finger was affecting his throwing more so than his hitting. Showalter tried to find the silver lining.

Actually I have been looking for a day to give him, so maybe that is a blessing in disguise, Showalter said at Dodger Stadium before the Mets 2-0 loss to Los Angeles. But hes kind of disappointed, obviously, he wanted to play tonight.

We havent played a third of the season. Im surprised something like this hasnt happened before. It kind of accentuates how fortunate hes been, kind of playing shortstop day in and day out.

Lindor entered Thursday on a tear, playing at a level befitting of a top player on a first-place team. Its the first real strong dose the Mets have received of Lindor in games that matter.

Nimmo said the energy Lindor brings each day to the club is the most notable aspect of his game.

Mets’ David Peterson: Surrenders Four Runs In Short Start

Peterson didn’t factor into the decision during Saturday’s 9-4 victory over the Dodgers, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Peterson exceled aside from the second inning, when a Pete Alonso error extended the inning and allowed three more runs to score. The 26-year-old struggled with his command again — throwing 50 of 90 pitches for strikes — and has now surpassed five innings in just two of his seven starts though New York has won six of those games. Peterson will take a 2.97 ERA and 1.23 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for next weekend against the Angels.
