A Wyndham Hotel The New Yorker

A Past Both Illustrious And Sordid

The New Yorker Hotel History

When the New Yorker opened in 1930, it was New York’s largest hotel, with 2,500 rooms. It once employed 92 telephone operators and 150 laundry staff, who washed as many as 350,000 pieces a day. The barbershop alone, one of the largest in the world, boasted 42 chairs and 20 manicurists.

In the 1940s and ’50s, the hotel was more than just a hotel. It hosted a number of popular Big Bands and celebrities, including Spencer Tracy and Joan Crawford. Even Fidel Castro stayed here. Its history has also veered into the sordid. The inventor Nikola Tesla spent the last 10 years of his life in near-seclusion in rooms 3327 and 3328 , where he also died. For more on this, check out this piece in the New Yorker magazine .

Finally, in 1975, three years after the hotel closed due to poor profits, the controversial Unification Church, led by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, purchased the building for $5.6 million and converted much of it into church space. Not until 1994 did it reopen as a hotel. Weird, wacky stuff.

To 90 Minutes From Three Airports Plus Shuttles And Limos To The Airport Straight From The Hotel

New York City has three nearby airports: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark . Getting into town from JFK or LaGuardia is usually more convenient than from Newark, but travel times are heavily dependent on the time of day and traffic conditions. From JFK, a taxi to anywhere in Manhattan costs a flat rate of $45 and takes around an hour in average conditions. From LaGuardia, a metered cab ride to Midtown Manhattan costs about $40 and can take 30 minutes if traffic is light, three times that if it’s bad. Rides from Newark cost at least $40 plus tolls and can take more than 90 minutes. It’s customary to tip your driver 15 to 25 percent.

Those looking to save some cash can use the privately run shuttle buses that are available at all three airports for about $14 per person. Some will actually drop you off right at the New Yorker they also leave from the hotel every hour. For more information on the shuttles, go to Super Shuttle or New York Airport Service.

Public transit is also available for as little as $7 per person, but travel can take up to two hours and involve a lot of lugging bags up and down stairways.

A Large Hotel On The South Side Of Midtown West The New Yorker Attracts A Healthy Mix Of Business And Leisure Travelers

It takes some serious self-confidence to name your hotel the New Yorker. But back in 1930, when the hotel first opened and competition wasn’t as fierce, the New Yorker was a city institution hosting silver-screen starlets and foreign dignitaries . A lot has happened since then, however, and now it’s officially the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel.

Housing 912 rooms on several dozen floors of an iconic Art Deco skyscraper — its architectural siblings are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building — the hotel’s New Yorker identity still shines brighter than its corporate connection. The grand lobby, with its enormous chandelier, evokes its rich old-New-York past. And the hotel certainly embraces its roots: The sign at the entrance and the gold logo on the marble floors show that Wyndham is happy to play a supporting role and let the hotel’s venerable past take center stage.

Great location but old and dated

Feeinthepink, COUPLESJan 10, 2022

As all reviews state this hotel is in the best location. I guess it comes down to you get what you pay for. We stayed 5 nights over New Year on the 21st floor and although wed requested a high floor with a view, we didnt get one. It was booked months in advance for a bargain price & if wed paid the prices they were charging at the time, wed have been very disappointed. Its definitely a budget hotel. Its great if you dont worry about the size or decor of the room. The decor is old and dated & the bathroom was tiny and old, but always clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful & Sean the security guard was especially friendly and interesting to talk to.

We stayed from 23 to 28 December on the 20th floor in a standard queen. Check in was quick, staff were friendly and welcoming . The room was as expected clean tidy and enough space for us and our cases. The rooms were cleaned daily, room service available and always staff on front desk. Security always asked for room key before accessing the lifts. Location great Penn Station on the doorstep and to our surprise madison sq garden opposite hotel entrance . Would recommend hotel, good value, great location and lovely staff.

Iconic New Yorker Hotel Joins Wyndham Brand

On July 1, 1982 a large number of the members of the Unification Church of the United States were married by Rev. and Mrs. Moon in a in in New York City. The total number of couples who took part was 2075, some coming from other countries. Soon after other American members were married in ceremonies in South Korea. Moon’s practice of matching couples was very unusual in both Christian tradition and in modern Western culture and attracted much attention and controversy. Thousands of couples have been placed in marriages by religious leaders with people they had barely met, since Moon taught that romantic love led to sexual promiscuity. Their have gained international public attention. Critics have stated that some of these marriages end in divorce, which is discouraged by the church.

In 1984 , a British sociologist specializing in religious topics, published which disputed much of the negative characterization of church members by the news media. In 1991 by investigative journalist criticized the federal government’s prosecution of Moon in the 1980s.
