The Oculus On September 11

Guide to Watch Shopping in New York City – The Best of NYC

11th marks a very important day for the Oculus. The day is honored by American flags hanging from the roof. Whats also special on this day is that the retractable skylight opens for two hours on the anniversary of 9/11. Removing the glass ceiling allows light to flood the main hall of the Oculus. The structure was specifically positioned for the sun to line up with the ceiling passage at the exact moment the second twin tower fell. The Oculus was designed to be a 9/11 tribute.

*On September 11, 2019, the ceiling did not open as planned due to maintenance issues.

Who Are You Anymore

A year of apartness relieved us of an external gaze, which proved both devastating and enlightening for our previously established aesthetic identities.

If you need a little help re-establishing your existence, stop by Sandy Liang , whose pieces chicly serve as what we used to call conversation starters. Ms. Liangs pale pink shop is around the corner from where the designer lives and works and near her familys restaurant. The undulating steel clothing racks made by Almost Studio, her boyfriends design firm, are inspired by jungle gyms, which will inspire you to play with cute smock shirts, floral fleeces, spandex shirts with anime eyeballs, bleach-dipped denim or a knit polo stitched with a vintage car.

Ms. Liang advises not to work with your significant other on a project if you see the store, its clear the close collaboration was worth it but its a great topic to pose at your first post-vaccination dinner, after youre complimented on your new Sandy Liang earrings. K.B.

Neutrality, we know, is an unacceptable political stance, but what about neutral aesthetics? Is all neutrality a toxic illusion? The short answer is yes. But if youre rich and dont want to be eaten, you can dress like a mix of oatmeal and sand in pieces from the neutral persons neutral store. Jenni Kayne has bleached oak floors and uniform necessities for jobs like what? Whatever. Its cashmere sweaters made in China are $345. Is this harsh? Dont ask me, Im neutral. K.B.

The moment is right for a new wave of entrepreneurs, ideologues, grifters and rabble-rousers to take over the empty spaces and try new things.

    Nyc Resale And Consignment Stores

Let me dispell any misnomers about our Resale and Consignment Shops in Manhattan they are incredible gems. All their items are hand-picked by the stores managers, who are fashionistas, and are either brand new with tags, or very gently used. It is not uncommon for gently used to mean it was worn once, by a model or actress, during a photo shoot or runway show. Thrift stores are another type of store entirely and are not to be confused with our consignment resale stores.

True Story: I once picked up a pair of Christian Louboutins for $110, that still had the Neiman Marcus tag on the sole, along with the last name of a runway model and the show in which she wore them at Fashion Week!!

Brands regularly stocked include: Prada, Chanel, Hermés, Gucci, Armani, Versace, Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Theory, Missoni and more all at a fraction of the retail cost. For a true shopping in New York City experience, our resale stores are not to be missed.

    Best Shopping In New York

“I like my money where I can see it hanging in my closet,” quipped Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. As the fashion capital of the U.S., New York City is in a league of its own, making it easy to make sure your wallet leaves a little lighter than when you came.

The question then isn’t what you’ll buy, but rather where. For those who love window shopping and spending major bucks, Fifth Avenue is a great place to start. You’ll find top name designers and high-brow window displays begging to be gawked at.

If you head south to Nolita and roll your shopping experience into Soho, there’s no shortage of one-of-a-kind shops and cute boutiques to keep you busy for days. Or, if you’re looking to get a little quirkier, head across the Williamsburg Bridge to this hipster haven where you can pop into cheese shops, vintage stores and pick up a cup of joe at one of the many neighborhood cafes.

Below, we take a glimpse at ten of the top shopping districts in New York City.

    Shopping On Lexington Avenue

On the Upper East Side around Lexington Avenue, you will find a nice mix of luxury brands and more common brands like Zara and H& M. The Upper East Side is also home to Bloomingdales, one of the most famous and beloved department stores of New York City. When you purchase an item here it will be placed in one of their signature, world-renowned, Little Brown Bags for you.

    Housing Works Thrift Store

I come here for the bookstore next door but if I have time, I stop by the thrift store, which has some pretty epic deals that even appeal to this non-shopper right here.

Plus, I just LOVE Housing Works Thrift Store and its social consciousness.

Believe it or not, all the proceeds from this thrift shop go towards aid for the homeless and those afflicted with the AIDS virus.

Therefore, while shopping here, you can feel good because youre actually doing something for the good of humanity.

And while youre here you can even sell some of your own goods or just cruise the racks for vintage designs by Gucci, Givenchy, DVF, etc.

Because this really is one of the best cheap clothing stores in NYC.

    Curators Of The New Old

Theres a new old on the market: The early aughts are now vintage. John Koenig, creator of the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, invented the term anemoia to describe the feeling of nostalgia for a time youve never known, and Gen Z has embraced its collective anemoia for the early aughts. Those seemingly recent trends and silhouettes are rushing back, aided by three aughty-anemoia specialty shops in Williamsburg and Greenpoint in Brooklyn.

If you are too tired to scour thrift stores, check out Tired Thrift , which has a goofy assemblage of selects inspired by the Greatest Hits of Hilary Duffs 2003 red carpet looks. Low-rise Express jeans, platform wedge sandals with rhinestone straps, Mudd camo-print side-tie capris manufactured at the dawn of the Iraq War , a Hawaiian print tankini and a New York & Company mini-vest priced for more than it was new are among the gems here.

To be honest, if youre reading about Tired Thrift in the newspaper and did not first see it on your For You page, these clothes may bring back bad memories. Whats the word for disgust for coming-of-age in a late capitalist nightmare?

Dont buy the Michael Kors-era Celine leather jacket or Miu Miu ruffle tote in case I come back for them. The fashion cycle is too short to live with regrets like these! Embrace the beauty of Y2K style now!
