Qualcomm Near Deal To Buy Atheros Says Ny Times
The New York Times is reporting today that San Diego-based chip maker Qualcomm is ready to buy Santa Clara’s Atheros Communications, a semiconductor maker, for $45 a share, or $3.5 billion. The deal may be announced as soon as tomorrow, said the Times. The price would be 22% higher than where Atheros was trading at midday today. Qualcomm, which has long been a dominant player in supplying chips to wireless phones, has been looking to crack the tablet and notebook computer markets, says the Times. Atheros makes chipsets for wired and wireless devices, including desktops, laptops and tablets. Qualcomm has been sitting on $10 billion of cash, and analysts and shareholders have wondered what it will do with the money. Qualcomm stock closed at $50.97, up 79 cents today — an indication that the market may think the deal will help both companies.
Times V Sullivan Libel Suit
In 1964, the Times was involved in a lawsuit that led to a landmark libel decision. In Times v. Sullivan, the Supreme Court reversed a libel decision, ruling against an Alabama official who had sued The New York Times for libel. The ruling stated that damages would not be awarded unless the person or party affected could prove “actual malice” with regard to the publication in question.

In 2019, Francis named McElroy one of two Americans to attend the Vaticans Synod on the Amazon region, which opened up discussions on celibacy requirements for the priesthood and the possibility of restoring the ministry of women to the diaconate, the Register noted.
Auguri to Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego, nominated as Cardinal by the Holy Father today. Graduate of the Jesuit School of Theology at and the Pontifical Gregorian University, moral theologian, and an expert on John Courtney Murray. Also.
James Martin, SJ May 29, 2022
Im in favor of it, McElroy told NCR at the time on the question of female deacons. My view on it is women should be invited into every ministry or activity we have thats not doctrinally precluded.
Crux, a Catholic news outlet once part of The Boston Globe, said cardinals also serve as key papal advisers, with their selection signaling the path a pontiff wants the church to take.
Last November, McElroy had coronary bypass surgery. He recovered and made his first public appearance in mid-January at the 10th annual March for Life, an anti-abortion event.
Weeks after Donald Trump was inaugurated president in 2017, McElroy gave one of the most powerful speeches Ive ever heard to a group of grassroots organizers and religious activists, said John Gehring in Commonweal magazine.
Besides McElroy, these Cardinal Electors under 80 will be able to enter a conclave to elect the next pope after Francis dies or retires.

Here’s How You Buy Your Way Onto The New York Times Bestsellers List
An endorsement from Oprah Winfrey. A film deal from Steven Spielberg. A debut at the top of The New York Times bestsellers list. These are the things every author craves most, and while the first two require the favor of a benevolent God, the third can be had by anyone with the ability to write a check — a pretty big one.
ResultSource, a San Diego-based marketing consultancy, specializes in getting books onto bestseller lists, according to The Wall Street Journal. For clients willing to pay enough, it will even guarantee a No. 1 spot. It does this by taking bulk sales and breaking them up into more organic-looking individual purchases, defeating safeguards that are supposed to make it impossible to “buy” bestseller status.
And it’s not cheap. Soren Kaplan, a business consultant and speaker, hired ResultSource to promote his book “Leapfrogging.” Responding to the WSJ article on his website, Kaplan breaks out the economics of making the list.
With a $27.95 list price, I was told that the cost of each book would total about $23.50 after various retail discounts and including $3.99 for tax, handling and shipping. To ensure a spot on The Wall Street Journals bestseller list, I needed to obtain commitments from my clients for a minimum of 3000 books at about $23.50, a total of about $70,500. I would need to multiply these numbers by a factor of about three to hit The New York Times list.
ResultSource CEO Kevin Small did not reply to a voicemail.

In San Diego, residents have long heard the charge that their fair city is a place where people put more stock in sunny weather and surfing than in art, architecture and cuisine. But Barrio Logan is challenging that outdated perception. The neighborhood, southeast of downtown, is among its oldest and most diverse. It also has long been a center of Latino culture. Today, a new crop of locally owned art galleries, breweries and restaurants, mostly along Logan Avenue, are popping up alongside the auto body shops and fruterías.
