A Past Both Illustrious And Sordid
When the New Yorker opened in 1930, it was New York’s largest hotel, with 2,500 rooms. It once employed 92 telephone operators and 150 laundry staff, who washed as many as 350,000 pieces a day. The barbershop alone, one of the largest in the world, boasted 42 chairs and 20 manicurists.
In the 1940s and ’50s, the hotel was more than just a hotel. It hosted a number of popular Big Bands and celebrities, including Spencer Tracy and Joan Crawford. Even Fidel Castro stayed here. Its history has also veered into the sordid. The inventor Nikola Tesla spent the last 10 years of his life in near-seclusion in rooms 3327 and 3328 , where he also died. Finally, in 1975, three years after the hotel closed due to poor profits, the controversial Unification Church, led by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, purchased the building for $5.6 million and converted much of it into church space. Not until 1994 did it reopen as a hotel. Weird, wacky stuff.

Changes In The 1980s 1990s And 2000s
On July 1, 1982 a large number of the members of the Unification Church of the United States were married by Rev. and Mrs. Moon in a in in New York City. The total number of couples who took part was 2075, some coming from other countries. Soon after other American members were married in ceremonies in South Korea. Most who took part were matched with their future spouses by Moon. Many couples were international or interracial. Before this most American church members had been single and living .
Moon’s practice of matching couples was very unusual in both Christian tradition and in modern Western culture and attracted much attention and controversy. Thousands of couples have been placed in marriages by religious leaders with people they had barely met, since Moon taught that romantic love led to sexual promiscuity. Their have gained international public attention. Critics have stated that some of these marriages end in divorce, which is discouraged by the church.
In 1984 , a British sociologist specializing in religious topics, published which disputed much of the negative characterization of church members by the news media. In 1991 by investigative journalist criticized the federal government’s prosecution of Moon in the 1980s.
Theres An Underground Tunnel That Used To Lead To The Subway
Roughly 200 feet beneath the New Yorker Hotel lies a secret: an underground tunnel that connected the establishment to Penn Station Its mostly forgotten, used primarily as storage, but it once enabled guests to go directly from the subway and trains to an elevator and up into the hotel. A porter would greet you at the entrance and take you the rest of your way.
When the hotel opened, the Long Island Railroad was in operation but the Eighth Avenue Subway was not even completed yet. It would open in 1932. An early advertisement states: Your room is only three minutes from your train through your own private entrance to the Pennsylvania and Long Island stations. This entrance also connects with the New York subway system and when the new Eighth Avenue subway is completed in the fall of 1931, there will be subway entrances at the very doors of the hotel. Like all things transit and New York, the opening of the Eighth Avenue subway was delayed a bit.
Kinney emphasizes that its important to note that the tunnels were already present before the New Yorker Hotel was built. In the late 1960s this tunnel below West 34th Street was closed and mostly disappeared from history, with many considering it an urban legend.

To 90 Minutes From Three Airports Plus Shuttles And Limos To The Airport Straight From The Hotel
New York City has three nearby airports: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark . Getting into town from JFK or LaGuardia is usually more convenient than from Newark, but travel times are heavily dependent on the time of day and traffic conditions. From JFK, a taxi to anywhere in Manhattan costs a flat rate of $45 and takes around an hour in average conditions. From LaGuardia, a metered cab ride to Midtown Manhattan costs about $40 and can take 30 minutes if traffic is light, three times that if it’s bad. Rides from Newark cost at least $40 plus tolls and can take more than 90 minutes. It’s customary to tip your driver 15 to 25 percent.
Those looking to save some cash can use the privately run shuttle buses that are available at all three airports for about $14 per person. Public transit is also available for as little as $7 per person, but travel can take up to two hours and involve a lot of lugging bags up and down stairways.

As Midtown West Changes So Does The New Yorker Hotel
The Art Deco New Yorker Hotel, located at Eighth Avenue and 34th Street, is just two blocks from the neighborhood-changing Hudson Yards megaproject, and it was this multibillion development, along with the extension of the 7 train and Manhattan West, that inspired the hotels owners to embark on a full makeover. The Journal reports that the owners, a subsidiary of the Unification Church, signed a new franchise agreement with the Wyndham Worldwide Corp. to upgrade the New Yorker from the budget-minded Ramada brand to a higher-end Wyndham Hotel & Resorts property. About $30 million has already been spent on renovations of the lobby and ballroom, and blocks of commercial space on the 42-story buildings lower 18 floors are being converted into 172 additional hotel rooms. The hotel currently holds 912 rooms, and when all of the changes are complete, that number could jump to 1,500. As leases expire over the next five years, 270,000-square-feet of space will be freed up and turned into guest rooms.
Now, under the Wynham brand, the hotel hopes to recapture some of its original grandness with the current renovations. Even the New Yorkers iconic sign, which has crowned the building for 75 years, is also getting spiffed up. The sign will be outfitted with color-changing LEDs, and they will be programmed to mirror the lights on the Empire State Building, located three blocks down 34th Street.

According to the recently declassified documents, some in the FBI feared Kosanovic was trying to wrest control of Teslas technology in order to make such information available to the enemy, and even considered arresting him to prevent this.

In 1952, after a U.S. court declared Kosanovic the rightful heir to his uncles estate, Teslas files and other materials were sent to Belgrade, Serbia, where they now reside in the Nikola Tesla Museum there. But while the FBI originally recorded some 80 trunks among Teslas effects, only 60 arrived in Belgrade, Seifer says. Maybe they packed the 80 into 60, but there is the possibility thatthe government did keep the missing trunks.

In 2019, more than a hundred thousand people walked into the Pierre, the five-star hotel on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Some checked in at the front desk others, in ball gowns and tuxedos, headed up the stairs to the Grand Ballroom. About five hundred events were held at the Pierre that year: weddings, galas, corporate parties, bar mitzvahs. In December, there were holiday parties every night. Such events could run to four hundred and fifty dollars a guest for food, drinks, and staffand then there were the ice sculptures and custom-made dance floors that clients ordered from outside venders. At the Pierre, events were a forty-million-dollar-a-year business, accounting for half the hotels revenue.
Today, Taj Hotels, a luxury-hotel chain based in India, operates the hotel and manages the building. Current co-op residents include Tory Burch, the fashion entrepreneur Michael Eisner, the former chairman and C.E.O. of the Walt Disney Company and Howard Lutnick, the chairman and C.E.O. of the financial-services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, who bought the penthousea triplex with its own ballroomin 2017, for forty-four million dollars.

The twenty-two-year-old figure skater Nathan Chen grew up in Salt Lake City, where he took his first lessons wearing his older sisters hand-me-down skates, on a practice rink for the 2002 Olympic Games. By the age of ten, hed won the novice title at the national championships. His mother, a Chinese immigrant, began driving him to California to train to save cash, they sometimes slept in the car instead of booking a hotel room. At his Olympic début, in 2018, in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Chen was a favorite to win gold, but he fell during his short program and entered the free skate in seventeenth place. With little to lose, Chen ended those Olympics on a note of go-for-broke glory, landing five planned quadruple jumps in his long program and, just for kicks, adding in an unexpected sixth. The performance wasnt enough to get him on the podiumhe ended up finishing fifthbut it lingered in the minds of fans as a display of his virtuosic talent. He is often called the Quad King.
Last week, Chen returned from Beijing, after finishing off the Games with a backflip on ice at the figure-skating exhibition gala. As he rushed to catch a flight from New York to California, where he planned to go on The Late Late Show with James Corden, we discussed his winning performance, the doping controversy, and his own changing relationship to the sport.
