Getting Started In New York
It’s not hard to get started homeschooling in New York State. If your children are in school, you can pull them out at any time. You have 14 days from the time you start homeschooling to begin the paperwork process .
And you do not have to get permission from the school to start homeschooling. In fact, once you begin to homeschool, you will be dealing with the district and not the individual school.
The district’s job is to confirm that you are providing educational experiences for your children, within the general guidelines set out in the regulations. They do not judge the content of your teaching material or your teaching techniques. This gives parents a lot of freedom in deciding how best to educate their children.
High School And College
Students who homeschool through the end of high school do not receive a diploma, but they have other options to show they completed the equivalent of a high school education.
This is particularly important for students who want to go on to earn college degrees In New York State since showing some form of high school completion is required to receive a college degree . This includes both public and private colleges.
One common course is to request a letter from the local district superintendent stating the student received the “substantial equivalent” of a high school education. While districts are not required to supply the letter, most do. Districts usually ask that you continue submitting paperwork through 12th grade to use this option.
Some homeschoolers in New York earn a high school equivalency diploma by taking a two-day standardized test . That diploma is considered the same as a high school diploma for most types of employment as well.
Others complete a 24-credit program at a local community college, while still in high school, or afterward, that grants them the equivalent of a high school diploma. But no matter how they show high school completion, both public and private colleges in New York are welcoming to homeschool students, who are generally well-prepared as they go on into adult life.
Scheduled Half Days Do Not Count Toward The Required 180 Days Of Session Effective Through The End Of The 2017
Based on recent reviews of school district calendars, and to ensure students receive the instruction time they need to succeed, the NYS Education Department has determined a need for clarification regarding half days and the required minimum 180 days of session.
For purposes of the information in this advisory, a scheduled half day is defined as any day containing no Superintendent Conference Day hours on which elementary students receive less than 5 hours of instruction excluding lunch/recess and/or secondary students receive less than 5.5 hours of instruction excluding lunch. Please be advised:
- Half days scheduled for elementary school students on days that count as Regents Exam Days do not count toward the 180 days.
- Half days scheduled on any end-of-year days before Regents Exam Days do not count toward the 180 days.
- Half days scheduled before scheduled vacation days for any grade levels, such as the days before Thanksgiving, do not count toward the 180 days.
- Half days scheduled for kindergarten students enrolled in the districts full day kindergarten program do not count toward the 180 days.
- Half days scheduled for any grade level to conduct staff development or parent teacher conferences, when they are in addition to four Superintendents Conference Days, do not count toward the 180 days unless the weekly minimum hours of instruction required in regulation can still be met in the week in which such half days are scheduled*.

Filing Homeschool Paperwork In New York
Here’s the timetable for the back-and-forth exchange of paperwork between homeschoolers and their school district, according to New York State regulations. The school year runs from July 1 to June 30, and every year the process starts over. For homeschoolers who start midyear, the school year still ends on June 30.
1. Letter of Intent: At the start of the school year , or within 14 days of starting to homeschool, parents submit a Letter of Intent to their local school district superintendent. The letter can simply read: “This is to inform you that I will be homeschooling my child for the coming school year.”
2. Response from the District: Once the district receives your Letter of Intent, they have 10 business days to respond with a copy of the homeschooling regulations and a form on which to submit an Individualized Home Instruction Plan . Parents are allowed, however, to create their own forms, and most do.
3. Individualized Home Instruction Plan : Parents then have four weeks from the time they receive the materials from the district to submit an IHIP.
The IHIP can be as simple as a one-page list of resources that may be used throughout the year. Any changes that come up as the year progresses can be noted on the quarterly reports. Many parents include a disclaimer like the one I used with my children:

New York State Homeschooling Regulations
In most of New York, parents of students who are subject to compulsory attendance regulations, between the ages of 6 and 16 must file homeschooling paperwork with their local school districts. The requirements can be found in the state Education Department Regulation 100.10.
“The regs” specify what paperwork you must provide to your local school district, and what the school district can and can’t do in terms of overseeing homeschoolers. They can be a useful tool when disputes between the district and the parent arise. Quoting the regulations to the district is the quickest way to resolve most problems.
Only loose guidelines are given as to what material should be covered — math, language arts, social studies including U.S. and New York State history and government, science, and so on. Within those topics, parents have a lot of leeway to cover what they wish.

This memo highlights revisions and additions to school district, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services , and charter school data collection requirements and deadlines for reporting 2021-22 school year data to the New York State Education Department via the Student Information Repository System and the Basic Education Data System Institutional Master File .
In addition to the specified due dates for data outlined in the SIRS data reporting timeline, the Department will extract and use data throughout the school year as needed. These data extracts may be required for State and federal reporting purposes, NYSED program office use, and other necessary purposes. Therefore, it is vehemently important for districts, BOCES, and charter schools to have data collection and input processes in place early in the school year to ensure data are as complete and accurate as possible throughout the entire calendar year. Accountability determinations and all related State and federal reporting will be completed with data submitted by school districts, BOCES, and charter schools as of Friday, August 19, 2022.
The reporting requirements described in this memo apply to all school districts and their schools, BOCES, and charter schools. Please share this information with district, BOCES, and school personnel who are responsible for data reporting and verification.

Nyc Public School Students Will Get Diwali Off Starting 2023 School Year
Diwali will be a New York City public school holiday starting in 2023. Darla Miles has the story.
NEW YORK CITY — Diwali will be a New York City public school holiday starting next year in 2023.
Mayor Eric Adams and Schools Chancellor David Banks announced Thursday the school calendar was moved around to make room for the important holiday for many religions.
Officials eliminated “Anniversary Day” as a holiday, allowing the school system to add Diwali to the calendar while still meeting the required 180 days a year in school.
Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant holidays in India that traditionally spans five days.
The holiday signifies the triumph of light over dark and the return of Lord Rama after he defeated the demon King Ravana.
The holiday takes place on October 24 this year.
As the first South Asian elected to state office, Thursday was a day that Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar was presumably most proud of.
“The time has come to recognize over 200,000 New Yorkers of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain faiths who celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights,” she said.
Representing those hundreds of thousands of families, Rajkumar announced new legislations that would make Diwali a school holiday.
“We’ve done this before, identifying holidays,” Adams said. “We’ve done it with Eid, we’ve done it with Lunar New Years. We do it with so many other days and so many other cultures that we acknowledge.”

Are Pickerington Schools Open Today
The first day of school is scheduled for Monday, August 31, 2020 and the last day for grades K-11 is scheduled for Friday, May 21, 2021. Winter break is scheduled to begin for students on Dec. 21 and classes will resume on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. Spring break is scheduled for March 29-April 2, 2021.
Here Are The Dates You Need To Know For The 2019
NEW YORK Summer won’t officially end until Sept. 23, but it might as well be over on Sept. 5 for New York City’s public school students. That’s when they will head back to class for the first day of school, according to the Department of Education’s 2019-20 school year calendar.

L2rpt Reports Reviewing Sirs Data
Verification reports for data in the SIRS are available in the Level 2 Reporting environment. These reports are to be used throughout the school year to help ensure that all data are reported accurately in the SIRS. If data must be updated, changes must be made in the local source system and uploaded to Level 2 of the statewide repository system following L0 and Level 1 processes where applicable. Data will be refreshed on a daily or weekly basis in L2 of the SIRS until the end of year deadline, August 19, 2022. Please pay close attention to the counts within the various subgroup populations , as these counts may impact various data reports for these subgroups.
Reporting errors discovered from a review of these reports must be corrected in the local source system and submitted to the SIRS. Guides for understanding these reports are available on the NYSED Level 2 Report Guides page.
User accounts for L2RPT access are created and managed by the superintendent or charter school CEO or the superintendents or charter school CEOs Delegated Account Administrator through the State Education Departments Delegated Account System available via the NYSED Application Business Portal. How To Complain About Does School Closure Policy
To provide comments or complaints about DOEs closure policy, contact them on their website. Contact the Department of Education. Charter and private schools do not have to follow the public school calendar or DOEs school closure policy for severe weather or emergencies. You should contact your childs school directly for information.
What to do when your school is closed on a snow day?
On snow days or days when school buildings are closed due to an emergency, all students and families should plan on participating in remote learning. Professional Development Day for 9-12 and 6-12 schools. Students in these schools do not attend. Students in K-5, K-6, 6-8, and K-12 schools and District 75 programs are in attendance.
