Its no secret that New York isnt exactly the cheapest destination for a city trip.

But lets be honest: This sprawling metropolis is most definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

    Cheap Accommodation In New Jersey

New Jersey is another state, but is located right across from Manhattan on the other side of the Hudson River.

Jersey City is right across from Manhattan and especially the hotels right at the water habe a beautiful view of the Manhattan Skyline. However, the hotel prices are not cheaper than in Manhattan, simply because you can get there pretty fast by subway.

If you really want to save money, you should look at the hotels in Newark. They dont offer a view on Manhattan, since Newark is located a little further outside, but a good room costs between 120 and 170 dollars.

You should definitely book a hotel close to the Newark Penn Station. With the red PATH Train Line you will need 22 minutes to the World Trade Center. A one way ticket costs 2,75 dollars .

    Pros of staying in Newark:

    • You get more for your money than in Manhattan
    • If you land in Newark, you are closer to the airport

    Cons of staying in Newark:

    • You will need 20 to 30 minutes to get to Manhattan
    • You dont have a view on the skyline, so you dont get that authentic New York feel

Choose The Right Season To Visit New Jersey

    Princeton in winter

Though you can visit New Jersey any time of the year, to get the most out of your trip, you want to make sure to plan your visit when were experiencing milder weather. Our climate shifts dramatically for each season. The best time to visit New Jersey is in warmer weather like Spring and Summer, so you can take advantage of everything that NJ has to offer.

Summers in NJ can be hot, humid, and downright brutal, especially in mid-late July. If you want to enjoy shore points such as Atlantic City and Cape May, summer is definitely the best time to come, but earlier think June through early July.

If youre not coming for the beach and want good sightseeing weather, Spring and early Autumn are your best bets for when to visit New Jersey.

Should you happen to be in the area during the colder winter months, you can enjoy ice-skating and indoor venues such as museums just make sure to bundle up.

Cheap Accommodation In New York With Airbnb

New York City on a Budget

If you look on Airbnb, youll often find apartments listed that are considerably cheaper than comparable hotel rooms. Wed still advise against staying in an Airbnb apartment in New York.

    Heres why:

Airbnb ruins the housing market for locals

We used to be huge fans of Airbnb. For two reasons: It allows you to rent out your apartment when youre on vacation, and you get to stay at a private apartment instead of a hotel and feel at home everywhere in the world.

The basic concept is great. But these days, Airbnb is full of professional vacation rentals leased for the sole purpose of putting them on Airbnb and filled with random ugly furniture to make a quick buck by renting them out 365 days a year.

The result: The housing market in major cities has become even more overcrowded and prices have skyrocketed. People are being driven out of popular districts, which then devolve into total tourist traps. That really sucks and we dont want to contribute to this cycle any longer.

Weve had several bad experiences with Airbnb.

Whats more, weve had some very bad experiences with Airbnb apartments over the past few years and were very disappointed with their customer service.

We ended up emailing back and forth with Airbnbs customer service for several days, sometimes even weeks, only to come to the realization that guests ultimately get the short end of the stick when problems arise.

Q: How Much Does The Ferry Cost From Nj To Nyc

Answer: The Ferry cost $9 for adults and there are discounts for kids. Compared to the PATH subway system this is X3 as much. For some people the best option is to take the Ferry over in the morning to enjoy the city views and the PATH back at night . If you choose to split transit between the PATH and the ferry it is best to park near the Newport Ferry Landing / PATH Stations.

Where To Stay In New Jersey With Easy Access To Nyc

We’re new to the whole NYC scene , but we’re dying to explore NYC . It’s overwhelming for outsiders to figure out the best way to do this. Any suggestions? We’re coming from and would like to stay outside the city and commute by train. Thanks for your advice. If you ever need advice about DC or Baltimore, let me know!

I would just say stay in NYC. There is so much to see in New Jersey. Here are a few links

I would stay right in Midtown Manhattan. Almost any place you want to go is within a couple of mile’s walk, and if you aren’t into walking, the subway is easy to use. I’m a bit lacking in the “big city” thing, too, and don’t do well with train and bus schedules.

If you are set on staying outside the city, we just made a trip to East Rutherford, NJ for the Eagles concert at the new Meadowlands Stadium, and stayed at the Homewood Suites. The manager was very helpful with bus schedules to get us into Manhattan for the day. The bus picked us up just a few blocks from the hotel and it was a 20 or 30 minute ride to the Port Authority bus terminal near Times Square. The round trip fare was $8.50 per person. The manager said that there were also trains we could take, but we would have to change trains somewhere along the way.

Unless you are set on a specific play or just like to pay the Ticketmaster premium, I would go to the TKTS kiosk at Times Square on the day you want to see a play. There are lots of 1/2 price tickets available if you are flexible about what you want to see.
