History Of Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center and the observation deck were a gift from John D. Rockefeller to Manhattan. In building Rockefeller Center, he wanted to create a space where visitors and locals could marvel at the city. Rockefeller Center has known many ups and downs since its completion in 1933.
The Rockefeller ice skating rink first opened in 1936. Initially, it was designed as a temporary skate rink to attract the crowds, but eventually, it became an annual fixture. The rink has a capacity of 150 people.

When Rockefeller set out to build an integrated commercial center there was an idea that he mentioned over and over again the idea of private business intersecting with public life. Thats why the Radio Corporation of America was the perfect tenant.
Having prospered during the Great Depression, this national radio network used the space to produce some of the earliest NBC radio programs. NBC Radio eventually transformed into the NBC TV we all know today.
Todays Radio City Music Hall gets its name from the Radio Corporation. The building isnt the mass media hall Rockefeller intended, but its still a well-known New York City landmark .
Going To The Top Of The Rock

Visiting Rockefeller Center As A Tourist: What To See
Not only is Rockefeller Center a thriving center of business, its also home to one of the citys most amazing art collections. Taking a walk around the plaza and through the lobbies of many of the buildings, youll see murals, mosaics, and statues. Many of the buildings themselves are art pieces, built in the Instagram-worthy Art Deco style.
The artistic charm is also evident around the main plaza. Next time you stop to admire the ice skating rink or outdoor dining area take a look around at the fountains, granite pools, and sculptures that surround you.

Head To The Top Of The Rock
If youre looking for a great spot to enjoy the iconic Manhattan skyline, head to the top of Rockefeller Center – Top of the Rock. This 67th-floor viewing platform is surrounded by glass panels, allowing you to enjoy sweeping, unobstructed views of Central Park, Empire State Building in the center, the hustling Times Square, and downtown skyscrapers.
The Top of the Rock observation deck opens 7 days a week, from 8:00 AM to midnight, with the first elevator going up at 8:00 AM, and the last one at 11:15 PM. Admission is $38 for adults, $36 for seniors , $32 for children and free for 6 and under.
You can also plop down an extra $10 to visit during the sunset, which is the best time to go for epic photos, but also the most crowded. If you get up early , youll have the platform by yourself and enjoy a majestic sunrise view. However, if it rains, you might want to call in advance and ask how visibility is.

In 1932, the Mexican socialist artist Diego Rivera , was commissioned by their son Nelson to create a color fresco for the 1,071-square-foot wall in the lobby of the then-RCA Building. This came after Nelson had been unable to secure the commissioning of either Matisse or Picasso. Previously Rivera had painted a controversial fresco in Detroit titled Detroit Industry, commissioned by Abby and John’s friend, Edsel Ford, who later became a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art.
As expected, his Man at the Crossroads became controversial, as it contained Moscow May Day scenes and a clear portrait of Lenin, which had not been apparent in initial sketches. After Nelson issued a written warning to Rivera to replace the offending figure with an anonymous face, Rivera refused . As per Nelson’s orders, Rivera was paid for his commission and the mural was papered over. Nine months later, after all attempts to save the fresco were exploredincluding relocating it to Abby’s Museum of Modern Artit was destroyed as a last option. Rivera’s fresco in the center was replaced with a larger mural by the Catalan artist Josep Maria Sert, titled American Progress, depicting a vast allegorical scene of men constructing modern America. Containing figures of Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, it wraps around the west wall of 30 Rockefeller Plaza’s Grand Lobby.

Bryant Park is miniscule in comparison to Central Park, but it has its own unique charms and an ambiance that makes it well worth a visit.
Bryant Park was first designed by Governor Thomas Dongan in 1686 and was declared public property.
The park used to have a reservoir but now its home to a sizeable area of grass and patio space to relax on.
If you plan on grabbing a bite to eat go, take it to Bryant Park and enjoy lunch on the grass. Whilst youre there why not charge up your phone at one of the outdoor charging tables.
Watch as office workers relax, people play table tennis and circus performers entertain.
From Rockefeller Center you want to head south down 5th Avenue and take a right along W 42nd Street.

Have Breakfast With Santa
There is nothing more Christmas than having breakfast with Santa and his elves under the giant tree at Rockefeller Center. Yes, you can do that now at Rock Center Cafe.
This rink-side restaurant is great for young children, featuring a Throne Room where the little ones can take that perfect shot on Santas lap, plus a Candy Bar Experience. You can reserve your spot at three different times , and admission is $65-$125 for adults and $45-$85 for children, which also includes the access to the Rink.
A great alternative is The Sea Grill, a seafood oasis at Rockefeller Center overlooking the Rink. Their breakfast menu features an array of chefs stations, such as made-to-order omelets and crepes, and chocolate fountains for the kids. Rockefeller Center In The 1920s
In 1927, the Metropolitan Opera Company was eyeing the area for a brand new venue, so they turned to John D. Rockefeller Jr. Son of the founder of Standard Oil, Rockefeller was a member of one of the wealthiest families in the world. He and his wife, Abigail, were art lovers , making them the perfect benefactors for the opera company and the new venue.
Unfortunately, financial tragedy struck just as the contract was signed between Columbia and Rockefeller. The 1929 stock market crash and the resulting Great Depression led to the opera house pulling out of the deal. Rather than trying to get rid of the land, Rockefeller used the opportunity to pursue another venture. He turned his sights on building a collection of office, retail, and entertainment spaces for businesses around the globe, something the city had never seen before.
