What To Do In Finger Lakes New York

Wineries In The Finger Lakes

Finger Lakes, New York: Scenic Beauty and Outdoor Fun

Please note, there are over a hundred wineries in this region and people have different predilections to the wines/tastes they may prefer. These are my suggestions based on taste, recognition/accolades, and ambiance.

Two unique types of wine that I personally recommend trying in the Finger Lakes are Riesling and Cayuga White. The former is renowned in the region as one of the best in the world and the latter was invented by local Cornell students!

Seneca Lake Finger Lakes Region New York

Seneca is one of the more popular of the Finger Lakes. The lake is dotted with water sport enthusiasts and the surrounding hills with vineyards. Geneva is situated at the northern end and Watkins Glen at the south, with villages and settlements on either side. The lake is 38 miles long and 3 miles across at its widest point. It is 600 foot deep. Attractions in the area include the winelands, Finger Lakes National Forest and regular farmers’ markets. Legend has it that the Seneca Drums are communications from tribal spirits but science suggests that the sounds are made from gas bubbles escaping from the lake floor.

Wine Tasting Boat Tour

This boat tour through Cayuga Lake departs from two different ports and takes a small number of travelers through different wineries/vineyards for wine tastings. A beautiful way to get to know Cayuga Lake while enjoying in many wineries.

The cost is $150 + tip and tax. So its not cheap. But its perfect if you dont want to drive and/or want something more physically accessible while enjoying the beautiful views.

If youre lucky enough to visit the Finger Lakes during winter, theres no excuse not to hit the slopes. Whether youre a skier, snowboarder, or a lodge warmer, there is plenty of fun to be had at Bristol Mountain, one of the best ski resorts in New York.

Buttermilks Falls State Park

This is one of my favorite places in the entire State of New York and one of the most beautiful hikes in New York. This park is a short hike around several natural gorges, natural pools, streams, waterfalls, unique rock formations, and lovely trails. Swimming is officially allowed at the bottom of the waterfalls when a lifeguard is present.

Geneva Most Local Area In The Finger Lakes

Although were not in Geneva, Switzerland , we sure have access to some stunning natural locations in this region of the Finger Lakes. Located on the northern shore of Seneca Lake, this picturesque town is a great choice where to stay in the Finger Lakes for anyone who likes historical places.

In the late 18th-century, people began to settle in this New York town. The names origin is still up for debate as some people say that it came from the town in Switzerland, or others that it has Native American origins, but wherever it came from, the area is just as beautiful.

As youll see, the town is all about local farming and agriculture, so its no wonder that most of the businesses in Geneva are based on producing fruits, vegetables, dairy products sold in farm markets, wineries, and craft microbreweries.

Geneva has that small-town charm, and the fact that they produce most of their food and beverage locally just makes everything better, Im a huge fan of these types of places!

Things to do in Geneva

  • Learn new things about the town at the Geneva History Museum
  • Have dinner and a beer at Beef & Beer
  • Explore the Seneca Lake State Park
  • Spend some time visiting the nearby wineries with Winewagen Tours
  • Buy some locally sourced products from the Finger Lakes Goods store

Lunch At A Winery A Stop At A Distillery

I spent my afternoon driving about the eastern shore of the lake. Every now and then Id see a diamond-shaped sign with a horse and buggy on it. They were warnings about Mennonite and Amish farmers in the area who still travel the roads in their buggies.

I visited a few of the incredible number of vineyards and boutique wineries in the area. Later I stopped for lunch at the Red Newt Cellars Winery and Bistro for a delicious lunch. I dined looking out over the vineyards that flowed down to the lake.

The area isnt all wineries, however. I made it a point to also stop at the Finger Lakes Distilling Company, a craft distillery. It uses locally sourced grains and other products, distilling them all in the traditional method.

Luckily, I was able to have a chat with its owner, Brian McKenzie. He explained to me all about distilling various grains to make different kinds of whiskeys and other products. I sampled a delicious Irish-style pot whiskey, so named since it cannot be called Irish because its distilled in America.

Corning Glass Museum + Studio

I had no idea that glass was such an interesting part of our human history, art and science. This museums puts the function of glass into perspective with exhibitions, galleries, historic interactive workshops, demonstrations, ancient collections, a wing explaining the impactful industrial uses of glass , and a large gift shop featuring glass from local New York artists. This is arguably one of the best museums in the country featuring such an interesting medium and so underrated! Allocate at least 2 hours to this museum and thats NOT including the studio workshop classes.

Discover The Stunning Grounds Of Hobart And William Smith Colleges

See the incredible beauty of New York’s Finger Lakes region | LOCALS. | Travel Leisure

If youve ever wandered around a college campus, particularly one with a long and storied history, youve probably felt one of the following sensations: the pleasant disorientation one feels when experiencing something new, the nostalgia one feels when vividly recalling something familiar, or a strong sense of envy when ones personal experiences dont quite stack up by comparison. Located just a stones throw away from the northwestern shore of Lake Seneca, its hard to imagine the predominant feeling wouldnt be envy when visiting the picturesque campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges for the first time.

Once separate institutions, Hobart and William Smith were established in 1822 and 1908, respectively, and then began operating in joint commencement from 1922 onward. They are private liberal arts colleges, whose origins can be traced back to 1797 and the Geneva Academy. A sense of its storied history can be felt and seen, particularly through its incredible array of architectural styles, while strolling across this eminently charming and walkable campus–an activity we highly recommend. Youll find that the campus offers fantastic examples of Jacobean architecture, among others, though its oldest structures, such as the chapel, are in the Gothic style. The boathouse is a popular sunrise viewing site.

Anthony Road Wine Company

The Anthony Road Wine Companys tastings are by appointment. I was greeted with a warm welcome and seated at a table by myself. I chose six wines to try from their curated flight options and was genuinely impressed by all.

I took a stroll around the property and then sat on the veranda with a couple visiting from their home in New Jersey. It was nice chatting with strangers while we gazed out over the vineyard around us, towards Seneca Lake in the distance.

One of the things that impressed me most was learning the winery was a family-owned business, started by John and Ann Martini in 1973. Neither of them had an agricultural background when they set out on their wine-making journey.
