Have Coffee While Strolling High Line

Once youve grabbed your coffee at the Hudson Yards take a walk on the High Line. This is something we try to do on every trip to New York.

The High Line is a 1 1/2 mile long elevated walkway and park that cuts through Manhattans West Side. It was an old freight train track, that is now a pedestrian path through condos and skyscrapers. You catch some great views of street art along the way as well.

  • It takes about 30 40 minutes to walk from Hudson Yards to the Whitney Museum in the Meatpacking District.

Explore The Lower East Side

The Lower East Side is one of the best areas in all of New York especially with its small markets, coffee spots and history, too.

As I mentioned before, take a look around the Tenenmant Museum, visit Katz Deli and explore the craft stalls and thrift stores that make this area of New York totally unique.

Visit Times Square At Night

Free Things to Do on a Visit to New York City

TripSavvy / Kelsea Watkins

As one of the most iconic places in the world, Times Square, where the New Years Eve ball drops, is worth a visit any time of day, but especially at night. You’ll be struck by the neon signs, glowing billboards, and gridlock traffic 24 hours a day. You won’t see much of a difference at 11 a.m. versus 11 p.m.! While there are plenty of stores for shopping and restaurants, merely walking around the few block radius will be interesting enough: There are always charactersin costume and otherwiseto spot!

Take A Bus Tour Of Harlem The Bronx Queens And Brooklyn

30 FREE Things To Do In New York City

New York City is made up of five distinct boroughs, so its worth visiting each one. However, if its your first time in the city, I recommend this bus tour, which highlights the most popular neighborhoods and covers 4 of the 5 boroughs. Its one of the must-do tours in NYC for first-timers.

First, Harlem is one of the coolest places in NYC and is best known for its African American roots. During the Great Migration of the 1920s and 30s, Black culture took center stage, which you can experience today at places like the Apollo Theater, the Jazz Museum, and the Museo del Barrio. Harlem is also known for its strong Christian presence and soulful gospel choirs, so if you want to know more about this neighborhoods culture, you can plan to go to a Harlem gospel service on Sunday.

15. Take a bus tour of Harlem, the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn

The Bronx is another must-see in NYC, thanks to its diverse culture and attractions, and will be the second borough you visit during this bus tour. Known as the birthplace of Jennifer Lopez and other famous singers, the Bronx is a hub for hip-hop, graffiti art, and Latin music. Moreover, the borough is home to Yankee Stadium, New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage.

Go To The Statue Of Liberty & Ellis Island

The Statue of Liberty is more a symbol of the United States and the values embodied here than any other monument in this land.

It was most certainly a welcomed site for immigrants coming to the United States through Ellis Island which makes sense. If you havent seen it in person, its massive which makes it very cool to visit.

The Statue of Liberty is grouped into the category of Colossal Statues and the first on record was built in 280 BC in Rhodes. The Roman Emperor Nero, first century AD, also built a colossal statue in his own image in the valley where the Colosseum would later be erected. Youd never have guessed, but all three of these statues were about the same height!

The Statue of Liberty is far from the largest statue in the world today, this position is taken by the Statue of Unity in India which is over three times its size! However, it is arguably the most recognized statue on Earth in competition with Christ the Redeemer in Brazil.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known informally as the Met, is a New York City institution. As famous for its annual fashion ball as it is for its forward-thinking art exhibitions, The Met has become the barometer of new and next for many a New Yorker. Its gothic building is also home to exquisite fine art that spans over 5,000 years including Rembrandts, Vermeers, cool medieval armour and an ancient Egyptian temple. The storytime events at the Nolan Library are particularly great for kids.

Visit The Bronx Museum Of Art

Another great family activity is to visit the Bronx Museum of Art, which is free to all visitors, any time. This museum is home to many different mediums of art such as painting, drawing, performance, and sculpture. This museum focuses on social constructs and contains many pieces that tell a story about injustices and the effects they have on certain populations. This is an eye-opening experience that the whole family can include themselves in to learn about the local culture and social issues overall in an artistic form. This museum also hosts live performance art, which is free with your registration to the event of your choice.
