If you are in a hurry, the most direct way to do it is via I-95 in one straight shot: a brutal 18-to-20 hour ride from New York City to Miami Beach! Weve done it once. Not fun.
Most people break the trip up into a very manageable two days. Thats what we usually do, thats about ten hours of driving each day. Switching drivers every few hours makes the trip easy.

Entertainment For A 15+ Hour Road Trip
You might be thinking, what could possibly keep you entertained for a 15+ hour drive from New York to Florida? Well, I have the answer. And even better, this kept us occupied for both drives, for a total of 30+ hours.
The answer? True crime podcasts! For us, it was one in particular. We stumbled upon Up and Vanished and as soon as we started listening, we were hooked. We listened to season one of this podcast. Its about the disappearance of the high school teacher and former pageant queen, Tara Grinstead, from a small town in Georgia. Between the regular podcast episodes plus all of the bonus shows, it was more than enough content to keep us occupied for the entire trip.
The other bonus? It kept us from arguing! The car seems to be the one place my husband and I tend to argue , so having this podcast to keep us entertained was perfect. We were both so engrossed in the story, we had no time to get into arguments. It was perfect!

How Philadelphia Achieved A High Vaccination Rate For Health Workers
While the national vaccine mandate for health care workers remains mired in the federal courts, government officials say there is ample proof that requirements work and do not cause a mass exodus of employees that some critics had feared.
Philadelphia, which issued a vaccine mandate in August, would seem to be a case in point. Virtually all hospital employees there are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to a group of local hospitals that met last week with officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which issued the national rule. About 95 percent of nursing home employees are also fully vaccinated, according to the city health department, compared with an average of 75 percent across the country.
With several states, including Pennsylvania, reporting sharp increases in Covid cases and hospitalizations and the arrival of the new Omicron variant, vaccine protection for health care workers is once again a critical tool.
Pennsylvania now has one of the countrys highest hospitalization rates. Covid continues to rage on, Dr. Jaewon Ryu, the chief executive of one of the states largest hospital groups, Geisinger, said at a news conference. Its intensive-care units are overwhelmed, he said.
In Philadelphia alone, 366 people were hospitalized in early December, compared with around 200 before Thanksgiving, according to city data.

How Long Is The Train Ride
Traveling by train to and from Miami and New York City is a long trip. Trains go from Penn Station in Manhattan to Miami Amtrak Station a bit north of the city. The route is serviced by Amtrak, via the Silver Meteor and Silver Star train lines, of which Miami is the southern terminus. The trip is about 27 to 30 hours, with stops in Washington, D.C., Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa. One-way tickets range from $130 for a seat to upwards of $479 for a sleeper car. Many find train travel romantic, and if sleeping overnight in a sleeper car is on your bucket list, this ride all the way down the East Coast might be the trip for you.

Long Island to Petersburg, VA
I am such a careful planner. I think and overthink many aspects of a trip and this was no exception! Im usually great at thinking through all the angles, BUT one big mistake I made was waiting until 3pm on a Friday afternoon to the hit the road. Let me re-phrase that leaving at 3PM ON A FRIDAY BEFORE A LONG WEEKEND WHEN ITS RAINING.
In retrospect, I should have pulled the kids out of school an hour earlier, but since they were missing so many days for this two-week trip I waited until afterschool to leave. Once we hit the highway all ready to go, we sat in bumper to bumper traffic for two hours.
Which really put us behind where I thought we would stop for the night.
So, my first tip is dont leave the New York City area during rush hour. Especially on a Friday!
But luckily, after that first two hours the rest of the trip literally, was traffic free!
The plan for the first night was to drive as far as possible, with a target stopping time of around midnight. We told the kids that dinner would be at a rest-stop and quicker than other meals on the road.
NOTE: We had a cooler with drinks and snacks, but we stopped for meals. With only one driver, it would have been too much to try to eat meals in the car.
I had hoped to make it to Roanoke Rapids, NC but with the delays due to traffic we only made it to Petersburg, Virginia.

Getting Back Home: Driving From Florida To New York
Oh and in case you are wondering, we did a great job on the reverse driving from Florida to New York! We left Naples early on a Thursday morning. But not too early. I knew it would be a long haul from to drive from Naples to North Carolina , so we made a reservation to stay the night at a Hampton Inn in South Carolina.
The next day we had four hours left to go to Raleigh, North Carolina. We had a wonderful family reunion and then heading home in one shot on a Sunday morning. Of course we hit traffic when we arrived back in the New York City area, but that is to be expected!
