All teaching certificate holders working in New York public schools must complete 175 hours of professional development every 5 years. Your professional development period begins on July 1 following the effective date of your certificate.

New York Teacher Education Requirements
The minimum education requirement to earn New York teacher certification is a bachelors degree. Candidates should also complete an approved teacher preparation program, also known as an NYS Registered Program. However, candidates who attended teacher preparation programs out-of-state may be eligible for an educators certificate if the program completed is deemed comparable to an approved program in New York. Such a program may be completed as part of the candidates bachelors degree or as a post-graduate certificate or masters program.
Become A Virtual Teacher In New York State
If you have a bachelors degree and cant find a job teaching in the city, try becoming a virtual teacher. New York State allows those licensed or certified to work as remote educators and does not require an on-site physical location. You can work via video conferencing, web conferencing, telephone conference calls, or other similar methods. New York Teacher Licensure Application Process
There are different tiers to New York teacher certification, and the Initial certification is valid for 5 years. It is an entry-level classroom certificate for new teachers. Within the five years, you can advance to a Professional Certificate, but must complete a master’s degree. Some entry-level certifications are conditional and will only last one year before determining how to move forward.
Applying for a certificate must be done through the online TEACH portal, where all documentation will be submitted. Confirmation of U.S. citizenship and identity will be required. You will also be asked what subject, grade level, and type of certification you are applying for.
New York state teacher certification requirements are that you must upload your university transcript, teacher preparation program, all relevant testing scores, a complete application for initial teaching certification, your background check, and any other required workshops or training that were required. Private and charter schools in NYC have individualized requirements for teacher applicants. A background check and fingerprint scan is a requirement for obtaining a New York Teaching Certification and for teaching in public schools in New York. The full fee is $101.75, and appointments can be scheduled by telephone at 877-472-6915 or online. Applicants are required to bring personal identification documentation to the enrollment.

New York has an Alternative Teacher Preparation Program targeted at mid-career and career-changing professionals. This program consists of an introductory section followed by certification tests and then mentored, paid employment as a teacher. New York City also offers the New York City Teaching Fellows program, which is a subsidized masters degree fellowship targeted at increasing the number of highly trained teachers in the NYC public school system.

The New York State Education Department and its Office of Special Education employ over 38,500 special educators to serve the states 728 public school districts. New York has 4,768 public schools, 140 charter schools and 1,991 private schools. All teachers require an initial certificate to begin teaching. You can choose between several different types of certificates and pathways to certification based on your existing situation. The Initial Certificate is valid for five years and is considered the entry-level teaching certification. You can also apply for a Professional Certificate once you complete the mandated professional development hours for teaching. If you are a pupil personnel professional, you must complete the Provisional Certificate. This certificate is also valid for five years. And the Permanent Certificate is the advanced certificate for individuals in the pupil personnel career path. It is valid for life or until revoked.
Alternative Paths To New York Teacher Certification
For those who are looking to change careers and enter the teaching field, there are alternative programs where you can transfer your credits to get your New York teacher certification. You can use your already completed degree to become an educator in your field, while completing all additional teacher preparation testing, including training and workshop duties.
New York State teacher certification requirements include the completion of an undergraduate, and in some cases, graduate degree, depending on the certification.
There are two types of transitional teaching certifications, called Transitional B and Transitional C. These programs allow those with an undergraduate or a graduate degree to participate in accelerated learning about teaching basics while also being offered paid employment in the field. Their classroom placement will be accompanied by relevant coursework and mentorship from the institution of learning that they are enrolled in.
Transitional B & C programs can be found in colleges and universities across New York State. Completion of the NYSTCE EAS and CST NYSTCE are required, and most applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 for the B program, which is valid for up to 3 years.

How Do I Become A Substitute Teacher In New York
The NYSED does not issue certificates specifically for substitute teachers however,certified teachers in New York and pending certification candidates can work in any district and subject for up to 40 days as a substitute teacher. After 40 days, these substitute teachers must be certified or seeking certification in the teaching area in which they are employed.
Some districts employ substitute teachers with just a high school diploma who are not certified or seeking certification for a maximum of 40 days. There may be exceptions to these time limits in high-need districts.
