Judge Reinstates New York’s Presidential Primary After State Cancelled It
Critics had said decision to call off presidential primary amounted to voter suppression, and could alienate Sanders supporters
A federal judge has reinstated New Yorks June Democratic presidential primary, siding with Andrew Yang, the former candidate, who sued the state in federal court and the recent decision to cancel the contest authoritarian and illegal.
The judge ruled Tuesday that the state had wrongfully removed the Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, Yang and eight other former presidential candidates from the ballot.
The decision came after two Democrats on the states election commission cancelled the presidential primary last week, relying on a new budget provision allowing them to remove presidential candidates who suspended their campaigns. The move outraged Sanders supporters and other progressives who said New York, a Democratic bastion, was actively disenfranchising voters.
It goes against what the party stands for, said Heather Key, who volunteered for the Sanders campaign. Theyre always on the case about gerrymandering and cheating with the GOP. And yet here they are controlling whether we can vote for the president of our choosing.
The US district judge Analisa Torres wrote that the state had deprived voters of their constitutional guarantee of freedom of association. New York voters, she said, werent just voting for a presidential candidate, but also for delegates who could influence the direction of the Democratic National Convention in August.
New York Democrats Cancel 2020 Primary Kicking Bernie Sanders Off The Ballot
New York has delivered a major blow to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ continued push for Democratic power.
Democrats on the New York state Board of Elections to cancel the party’s presidential primary, which had already been pushed from April back to June 23 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That leaves Sanders without a chance to grab any delegates in the state, despite his insistence on staying on the ballot to secure more standing within the party.
Sanders suspended his 2020 run last month and endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, but still wanted his supporters to vote for him so his delegates could “exert significant influence over the party platform and other functions” at the Democratic National Convention. But Doug Kellner, one of the two Democratic commissioners on the elections board in New York, concluded Sanders’ suspension “ended the real context for the primary election.” “Joe Biden is the only candidate and therefore he is effectively the winner of the New York primary,” Kellner said, so holding the primary would be “unnecessary and frivolous” during the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2021 New York City Comptroller election consists of Democratic and Republican primaries for New York City Comptroller on June 22, 2021, followed by a general election on November 2, 2021. The primaries were the first NYC Comptroller election primaries to use ranked-choice voting. The primary and election are being held alongside concurrent primaries and elections for mayor, Public Advocate, Borough Presidents and City Council.
Incumbent New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer was barred from running for a third term by term limits, and ran for mayor. City councillor Brad Lander received the nomination of the Democratic Party, while Daby Carreras received the nomination of the Republican Party.

Adamss wide lead over his closest opponent makes him the favorite to win, though he still needs to earn enough voter preferences under the ranked-choice system to reach 50 percent plus one. That could be a challenge for a candidate who spent much of the final weeks of campaign courting controversy. In theory, his polarizing personality could hold him back in later rounds if voters decided not to rank him at all. This ranked-choice element was behind the alliance between Garcia and Yang, with Yang urging his supporters over the weekend to rank her second on their ballots. The result of Yangs endorsement will be borne out in following rounds, potentially boosting Garcia into position to take on Adams.

The Numbers As They Stand Wednesday
The ranked choice election results provided by the BOE show that after nine rounds, Eric Adams leads with 51.1 percent of the vote over Kathryn Garcias 48.9 percent. In the penultimate round, Garcia bested Maya Wiley by just 347 votes.

Primary Results Certified By Board Of Elections Show 23% Turnout Among New York City Democrats
Voters cast many absentee ballots
Over a month after the June primary, the New York State Board of Elections has certified the results, which show a relatively large voter turnout aided in part by the pandemic-induced expansion of absentee balloting. Almost all of the primaries in New York City were among Democrats, including a number of hotly-contested races for the House of Representatives, both houses of the State Legislature, Queens Borough President, and more.
The elections saw several Democratic incumbents toppled by progressive insurgents while the ascendent New York left, led by activists and groups including the Working Families Party and New York City branch of the Democratic Socialists of America, also did well in open races where there was no incumbent. But several incumbents also held onto their seats amid challenges.
In the only citywide race, the Democratic presidential primary, there were 844,448 votes cast, including 528,976 in-person votes and 315,472 absentee/military ballots therefore, absentee ballots represented 37.4% of all ballots counted in New York City in that primary, with in-person voting accounting for 62.6%.
With 3,617,982 registered Democrats in the city as of this February — including 1,172,317 in Brooklyn 837,162 in Queens 832,312 in Manhattan 636,791 in the Bronx and 139,400 on Staten Island — the 844,448 presidential primary votes represents a turnout rate of 23.3% among New York City Democrats.

Virus Leads New York To Nix Democratic Presidential Primary

ALBANY, N.Y. – New York cancelled its 2020 Democratic presidential primary election because of the coronavirus pandemic, infuriating former candidate Bernie Sanders campaign and his supporters. They called Mondays decision a strike against democracy.
The Democratic members of the state Board of Elections voted to nix the primary. New York will still hold its congressional and state-level primaries on June 23.
Commissioner Andrew Spano said he worried about potentially forcing voters and poll workers to choose between their democratic duty and their health. While there will still be other offices on the ballot, Spano reasoned it made sense to give voters an opportunity to choose in contested races but not to have anyone on the ballot just for the purposes of issues at a convention.
The results of the upcoming primary were largely symbolic since Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, had already dropped out of the race, making Joe Biden the presumptive Democratic nominee. Still, the cancellation comes at a pivotal time for the former vice-president, who is working to coalesce progressives support behind him and could find those efforts complicated.
Sanders campaign had asked the commissioners not to cancel the primary, noting that it helped select delegates who help determine the partys platform and rules.
Cohen also scoffed at the notion that New York could hold primaries for other offices but not for president.
There was no immediate comment from the DNC.

Taking the stage at an Election Night party in Williamsburg, he was met by supporters chanting, The champ is here! Adams was his usual, idiosyncratic self, speaking sometimes in the third person and stopped just short of declaring outright victory: New York City said our first choice is Eric Adams.
Speaking for 40 minutes, Adams took shots at the media and his rivals, made a tribute to his late mother, and spoke in particular about the lives of Black New Yorkers, whose votes propelled him into first place. If Black lives really matter, it cant only be against police abuse, said the man who was beaten by cops as a teenager and then became an officer himself. It has to be about the violence tearing apart our communities, he continued, talking about the need for residents to not only be free of guns and crime, but to also have affordable housing and healthy food.
Despite apparently trouncing Wiley and Yang, he couldnt resist taking jabs at them. Adams said he has real experience fighting crime as a cop, opposed to Wileys theoretical experience. He also dunked on Yang, saying some candidates misunderstood is that social media does not pick a candidate. People on Social Security pick a candidate.

Adams had long been mulling a run for New York mayor, and on November 17, 2020, he announced his candidacy for Mayor of New York City in the 2021 election. He was a top fund-raiser among Democrats in the race, second only to Raymond McGuire in terms of the amount raised.
Adams is running as a moderate Democrat, and his campaign is focused on crime and public safety. He has argued against the defund the police movement and in favor of police reform. Public health and the economy are cited as his campaign’s other top priorities. Initiatives promoted in his campaign include “an expanded local tax credit for low-income families, investment in underperforming schools, and improvements to public housing.”
On November 20, 2020, shortly after formally announcing his run for mayor of New York City, Adams attended an indoor fundraiser with 18 people in an Upper West Side restaurant during the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing criticism. Adams held an already scheduled fundraiser the following day in Queens, when a 25-person limit on mass gatherings was in place. Adams’s campaign said that there were eight people at the event and that they were required to wear masks and practice social distancing.
Following his primary victory, Adams hosted a series of pricey political fundraisers in The Hamptons and and vacationed in Monte Carlo, which critics contend contradicts his message of being a “blue-collar” mayor.
Food Banks See A Jump In Demand
With over a million New Yorkers out of work because of the virus and the related shutdown, food banks across the state are experiencing huge jumps in demand as much as 40 percent upstate, 100 percent in New York City and 200 percent in Westchester County, Mr. Cuomo said.
He said the state would provide food banks with $25 million in emergency aid.
He also noted that some dairy cooperatives upstate were dumping milk because the market could not consume it.

The Yang Blame Game Begins
Andrew Yang, who for months was the races front-runner, badly underperformed expectations on Tuesday night, taking only 11.66 percent of first-place votes in the current count and conceding late in the evening. Now Yang allies who worked on his 2020 presidential campaign are blaming his poor showing on a lobbying firm closely aligned with his mayoral campaign.
The Uprisings Hunter Walker reports that associates of the candidate claim that his mayoral bid was mismanaged by Tusk Strategies. The firm is run by Bradley Tusk, a wealth venture capitalist whom some had cast as a political Svengali, shaping a relatively blank-slate candidate around his policy preferences.
For months, several senior staffers from the presidential campaign offered guidance to Tusk Strategies without response in regards to earned media and digital that were largely ignored, an unnamed senior adviser from the Yang presidential campaign told Walker. This loss is being squarely placed on this firm.

Summary Of Changes To Election Dates And Procedures
New York modified its absentee/mail-in voting and candidate filing procedures for the November 3, 2020, general election as follows:
