While trying to maintain culturally sensitive, and show support to the black lives matter movement in the midst of a global pandemic had me thinking. Times are tough, with many Americans holding on to their wallets a little tighter and the unemployment rate at 11.1% monetary support can be challenging.
It seems most trending articles talk about donating to organizations, supporting black owned restaurants, and immersing yourself in literature. I think those are all great options if you have the means, unfortunately not everyone has the funds these days or may need an alternative. I started thinking of other black owned business to support, which brought me to coffee shops.
After doing some research, I found quite a few black owned coffee shops in Brooklyn. Instead of supporting big international corporations like Starbucks or Dunkin, try supporting local. There are a variety of trendy local coffee shops in most Brooklyn neighborhoods, all offering their own unique vibe. Its a great way to show support without breaking the bank, not mention you can get your morning fix while indulging in a delicious snack. Lets hear it for the local coffee bean aficionados!

According Cafe con Libros manifesto, it is an intersectional Feminist community bookstore and coffee shop that aims to create a vibrant community space where everyone, specifically female identified folx, feel centered, affirmed, and celebrated.
The bookstore and coffee shop was founded in December 2017. Its founder, Kalima DeSuze wanted to create an explicitly feminist space and has handpicked books for kids and adults alike that focus specifically on female narratives. She also lists books at affordable prices to make them more accessible to women who are statistically paid less than men. The bookstore also takes suggestions for new releases or titles they would like to see sold in the store.

Brooklyn Borough President Commits To Shopping At Black
BROOKLYN As national backlash grows against Starbucks after two two black men were arrested at a Philadelphia store, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is taking local action.
The Starbucks incident just made many people highlight the many great small black-owned coffee shops, said Adams.
Inspired by a BKLYNER article, Adams is launching a tour of black-owned coffee shops. One of his first stops on Friday: Bushwick Grind, owned by Kymme Williams-Davis and Raymond Davis.
Williams-Davis says that she had written a note to Adams months ago about pooling community resources to support local shops. But she never sent it, until she heard about the tour.
I took that email out of the draft, modified it a little bit and introduced ourselves to him, said Williams-Davis. Probably about two hours later, I got an email back.
On Friday, Adams also visited Bittersweet in Fort Greene.
When you visit , youre supporting the local economy, said Lucian Redwood, who owns Bittersweet and coffee shop Sit & Wonder.
Adams says that if people want to support black-owned businesses, they need to physically walk through their doors and buy their products. He plans to visit all the ones featured in the BKLYNER article, which current lists over 37 shops.

Serengeti Tea And Spices: Central Harlem
This quaint little tea room in East Harlem uses ancient African techniques to make its teas and spices. Its founder, Liberian-born Doughba Hamilton Caranda-Martin, is a world-renowned expert on African herbal teas and medicine and has traveled across Africa, Asia, and North America.
Launched in 2013, Caranda-Martin hoped that his shop would bring Africas best herbal teas to a wider audience.
The global marketplace does not realize the amount of tea that Africa produces, Caranda-Martin said to Huffington Post. UPDATE : Today, Starbucks will be closing all their branches early nationwide to conduct a racial bias training for all its employees. The training comes in response to the incident in Philadelphia in early April.
