New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made mobile sports betting legal in April 2021. Its been legal to place in-person bets for years, but the closest sportsbook casino to New York City has remained over two hours away. Many gamblers have chosen to cross the Hudson River into New Jersey to place mobile bets, which have been legal in that state since 2018. The New Jersey Gambling Commission that over 20% of New Jerseys sports betting comes from New Yorkers crossing the border.
The licensing approval for nine online operators by the New York State Gaming Commission changes the face of New York sports betting. Two groups of gambling companies, including Caesars Sportsbook, Wynn Interactive, Resorts World, Ballys, and BetMGM, now have the right to operate in New York. These licenses came at a high cost. Sportsbooks are being taxed 51% of their gross gambling revenue from New York betters. Platforms awarded licenses will also pay a $25 million licensing fee.
Online Gambling In New York
New York has flirted with legalizing online gambling for years, particularly online poker. Lawmakers have shown no real interest in passing legislation to legalize online casinos in NY, but they have considered multiple bills to authorize online poker.
Pro-gambling lawmakers have introduced bills every year since 2014 in an attempt to authorize online poker in New York. Those efforts have failed to yield results to date, but the effort continues to this day.
Senator Joseph Addabbo has played a vital role in pushing lawmakers to authorize online poker over the years. His efforts include introducing S 18 in 2019 and again in 2020, a bill that would classify poker as a game of skill rather than gambling.
Under S 18, online poker operators would be able to apply for licenses at a hefty price of $10 million each and then be subject to a 15% tax on gross revenue. The bill failed to progress in 2020, pushing New Yorks online poker efforts over to 2021.
Past Effort to Legalize Online Poker in New York
Senator Bonacic introduced bill S6913 in March 2014 to specifically address online poker. The stated purpose of the bill was to authorize the New York State Gaming Commission to license certain entities to offer for play to the public certain variants of internet poker which require a significant degree of skill, specifically Omaha Holdem and Texas Holdem.

New York Sports Betting January 2022 Update
Its a great time to be a sports bettor in New York right now. Before long, online sports wagering will fully launch, meaning anyone in the Empire State will be able to place a wager on the sporting event of their choice. After a failed attempt by Congress to get online sports betting legalized in New York, a collaboration between the Senate, House, and Governers office ensured that sports wagering would be included in the budget. The current plan has many similarities to former Governer Andrew Cuomos proposed monopoly blueprint. Were still waiting on some of the exact details, although budget director Robert Mujica claims that New York should expect around $500 million annually in tax revenue from sports betting. Initial rumors indicated a smaller amount of sports betting licenses at launch. These rumors were later confirmed.
Expect these sportsbooks to launch by February 13th, 2022, just in time for Super Bowl LVI, which will be a major sports wagering day. Both the legislative branch and Governers office have confirmed this target date, although the early license approval could signal earlier launches as well.

PayPal is now available at most popular sportsbooks across the country. This has long been a handy method of transferring money online and keeping multiple cards organized in a virtual setting. Deposits are usually available as quick as working directly with a bank account.
Popular sportsbooks also allow gift cards from a popular financial service, such as VISA or MasterCard. DraftKings even offers their own specific gift cards! Also, get gift cards and not pre-paid cards, as there can be issues with funding accounts with the latter.

Recent History Of New York Sports Betting
Following the retirement of John Bonacic at the end of the 2018 legislative session, the prospects of legalized sports betting in New York could have been in flux. But Bonacic, a longtime Republican from the 42nd district, passed the mantle to Addabbo, his longtime ally on the Senate Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee.
As a parting gift, Bonacic laid the groundwork for the legalization of sports betting in the Empire State. In March 2018, weeks before the Supreme Courts decision, Bonacic introduced legislation to amend the sports betting provisions of the 2013 act. At the time, Bonacic described sports betting as a revenue enhancer for education initiatives in New York. While Bonacics bill ultimately died at the end of the 2018 legislative session, the legislation authored by Addabbo was largely based on the framework.
While New Jersey continues to capitalize on the popularity of smartphone wagering, New York did not offer the activity for the 2019 or 2020 NFL seasons. Though Pretlow initially expressed confidence that New York could legalize mobile sports betting in 2020, his optimism faded as the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the nation.
Retail Sports Betting Vs Mobile Sports Betting
For most people, sports betting is a fun leisure activity that adds a little extra spice to the experience of watching their favorite sports or teams.
That sense of excitement is there if you have to attend a retail sportsbook in person to place your wager.
However, it is hard to deny that the growth in popularity of mobile betting in recent years has added considerably to the ease and convenience of placing a wager.
Rather than having to leave your home, you can now enjoy sports betting without leaving your armchair. Sports betting apps are so sophisticated, with such a keen focus on streamlining the customer experience, that it is hard to imagine how much easier it could be to place a wager.
As newcomers to online sports betting, New York fans will almost certainly soon be able to enjoy that convenience legally for the first time.
It is also easy to access bonuses and promotions when sports betting on your mobile device. And the ease of betting means you can place a wager more quickly, which makes betting on live events a more attractive proposition.
Mobile betting is an enhanced wagering experience delivered to your personal mobile device – no wonder there is great anticipation over the imminent launch of mobile sportsbooks in New York.

Where Will The Money Go
The money from the state tax on mobile betting revenue will, for the most part, be divided up the same way other gambling revenue is.
Under state law, about 80% of that revenue is flagged for two purposes: elementary and secondary education, and property tax relief.
The mobile betting law also flagged money for two other purposes.
For the first year, 1% of the states mobile wagering tax revenue will be reserved for treating problem gambling and educating people about gambling addiction. In subsequent years, it will be $6 million a year.
Another 1% in the first year will go toward state grants for sports programs for underserved youths. In subsequent years, $5 million a year will go toward that purpose.
New York Betting Laws
Historically, New York betting laws have been fairly restrictive, primarily due to New Jerseyâs Atlantic City presence and the shared revenue from supporting that interstate project. However, as the New Jersey commercial gambling scene has faltered over the last several years, New York betting laws have changed to reflect the reality that fewer and fewer New Yorkers are making the trip over the bridge. Thus, legal New York betting was opened up in the Empire State itself, with residents voting in 2013 to allow Las Vegas-style casinos to operate inside its borders.
The primary laws concerning gambling in New York are covered in the stateâs constitution. First, § 5-401 of the New York General Obligations Laws defines illegal gambling as âll wagers, bets or stakes, made to depend upon any race, or upon any gaming by lot or chance, or upon any lot, chance, casualty, or unknown or contingent event whatever.â
The New York Penal Code further defines what constitutes unlawful gambling in the state in § 225.00 et seq. As written, â person engages in gambling when he stakes or risks something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance or a future contingent event not under his control or influence, upon an agreement or understanding that he will receive something of value in the event of a certain outcome.â
