New York State Department Of Labor Addresses Phone Line Complaints

Lines getting longer at New York’s soup kitchens – 16 Oct 09

BUFFALO, N.Y. Since our story aired Wednesday night about people being asked to give overpayments back to the New York State Department of Labor, we’ve gotten more questions from people who say they haven’t received their benefits on time and can’t get in touch with anyone at the NYSDOL.

2 On Your Side has heard from a lot of people who say they haven’t gotten their extra $300 they’re supposed to be getting every week in federal benefits. They are also having problems being able to talk to somebody about it.

A viewer who asked that we not use their name emailed saying, “I have called over 300 times in the past two days, and it is impossible to get a rep on the phone. This doesn’t include the hundreds of other calls I have made since my new claim was filed six weeks ago. Processing time says two to three weeks. I know many are in the same boat. How are families supposed to survive?”

So on Thursday, 2 On Your Side asked the NYSDOL what people should do if they can’t get through by , and what they should do if they haven’t gotten the extra $300.

But that doesn’t say what to do if you can’t get through by calling the main number.

We were also told the call center has extended hours during the week, and that it’s important for you to carefully listen to the prompts and choose the correct option to be connected with the correct agent.

And, as we reported last month, they still say they haven’t seen any current issues with the extra $300 going out.

What Should I Do With My Vaccine Card

You should get a small white card at your vaccination appointment with your name, birth date, name of the vaccine you received and the date it was administered. If you receive the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, bring your card when you get your second shot. You may need your vaccine card to schedule a third vaccine dose, for certain immunocompromised people, or a booster shot. You may also need it for certain kinds of travel or other activities and may want to take a photo of it with your smartphone for your own records. But experts warn that posting a photo of your card to social media could make you vulnerable to identity theft. If youve lost your vaccine card, call the site where you were vaccinated to request a new one or a copy of your vaccination record. You can also contact your state health department to request a replacement card or a copy of your record.

Child Marriage Is Legal in New York But This Bill Aims ...

Weve been taking lockdown pretty seriously. My wife and son have some autoimmune conditions. I didnt want to put my family in a position where Id be working in a very public-facing job and potentially bringing something home. Paul Hofford, former bartender at A Rakes Progress in Washington. Quoted in Washington City Paper.

Nobody wants to get a potentially deadly disease for a job slinging eggs Benedict. And more so than many other occupations, restaurants and other parts of the service sector require face-to-face contact with the public.

One piece of evidence supporting this idea: There appears to be a relationship between vaccinations of people and a rise in their employment rate.

Aaron Sojourner, a University of Minnesota economist, used the Census Bureaus Household Pulse Survey to explore that relationship among 3,600 finely grained groupings of Americans by demographics and geography.

A 10-percentage-point increase in the share of people fully vaccinated corresponded with a 1.1-percentage-point increase in their employment. There are many ways to interpret the finding it doesnt tell us anything about causation but one possibility is that vaccinated people are more comfortable taking jobs.

The first-order issue is the virus, and if thats what caused the crisis, then it is also the path out of the crisis, Professor Sojourner said. Crushing the virus is the solution to both the supply problem and the demand problem.

Unemployment Is High Why Are Businesses Struggling To Hire

Health concerns, expanded jobless benefits and still being needed at home are among the reasons would-be workers might be staying away.

There are two distinct, and completely opposite, ways of looking at the American job market.

One would be to consult the data tables produced every month by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which suggest a plentiful supply of would-be workers. The unemployment rate is 6 percent, representing 9.7 million Americans who say they are actively looking for work.

Alternately, you could search for news articles mentioning labor shortage. You will find dozens in which businesses, especially in the restaurant and other service industries, say they face a potentially catastrophic inability to hire. The anecdotes come from the biggest metropolitan areas and from small towns, as well as from touristdestinations of all varieties.

If this apparent labor shortage persists, it will have huge implications for the economy in 2021 and beyond. It could act as a brake on growth and cause unnecessary business failures, long lines at remaining businesses, and rising prices.

Hopes Pinned On Adams

One key to the recovery will be whether City Hall can inspire confidence in the citys future in the business community.

In an effort to send a signal about his views, Democratic mayoral nominee Eric Adams said earlier this week that he planned a radical reorientation of the attitude at City Hall.

New York will no longer be anti-business, he told a Manhattan business conference. This is going to be a place where we welcome business and not turn into the dysfunctional city that we have been for so many years.

Business leaders are looking forward to a change, said Don Winter, chair of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, who called the mayoral frontrunners comments encouraging.

He is focused on improving how education and workforce development programs prepare residents for jobs and giving employers a much bigger role in advising what the requirements are for employment and upward mobility, said Kathy Wylde, CEO of the Partnership for New York City.

He is also committed to remove barriers that the government bureaucracy puts in the way of business formation, job creation and real estate development.

Adams, who is widely expected to win the November election against Republican Curtis Silwa, declined repeated requests from THE CITY for an interview about his views on the citys struggling economy.

How Are Vaccinations Working In Nursing Homes And Long

Most residents and staff of long-term care facilities in New York were offered COVID-19 vaccinations through a federal program that contracted with CVS and Walgreens to administer COVID-19 vaccines via free on-site clinics. The program has ended, but to ensure long-term care facilities still have access to vaccines for new residents or staff, the federal government is continuing to allocate doses to pharmacies partnered with long-term care facilities. AARP is calling for mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for nursing home residents and staff. The federal government has ordered all nursing home staff be vaccinated in order to receive Medicare and Medicaid dollars. New York has issued a vaccine mandate for all health care workers in the state, setting a deadline for COVID-19 vaccination by Sept. 27. The mandate covers staff at hospitals, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, adult care, and other group care settings.
