The BMW X3 is the brands best selling car and for good reason. Its spacious, comfortable, has a great interior, and is genuinely nice to drive. Its probably a better overall package than the 3 Series, despite no car enthusiasts wanting to admit that. So its an important car for BMW, which is why this new LCI facelift needs to be a hit and it seems like it will be.
In these new photo galleries, we get to see the South African market BMW X3 LCI in two different colors Sophisto Grey and Brooklyn Grey. The former of which is on an X3 xDrive20d, the entry-level diesel variant, and the latter is on an X3 M40i, the punchy M Performance variant.
First up, lets take a look at the Sophisto Grey model. Its a darker, more subdued, more handsome grey than its Brooklyn Grey sibling. We can see this becoming a very popular color, especially in todays monochromatic market. So few customers get interesting colors anymore, which is a shame, and greys are more popular than ever. A handsome, dark grey like this is going to be a big seller, especially on more chill model variants like the xDrive20d.

Theres certainly no shortage of special editions as BMW keeps sprucing up its models in a bid to lure in more buyers. At the end of March, the Brazilian division introduced the X4 M40i Individual Edition before the coupe-SUV in the same M Performance guise received the M Sport Edition treatment a couple of weeks later. Theres a third one on the way, but this time its based on the conventionally styled X3 M40i. Its called the M Sport Edition, and just like the namesake X4, its dressed to impress in a fancy individual paint.
Were talking about Frozen Deep Gray Metallic, applied to 30 cars heading to Brazil. Although the performance crossover is locally assembled at the Araquari factory as of March 2022, this special edition will be imported from Spartanburg. Why is that the case? Because of the Individual paint, which can only be applied at the plant in South Carolina.
Beyond the eye-catching finish, the X3 M40i M Sport Edition comes loaded with standard equipment. The list includes everything from laser headlights to leather upholstery in Merino Red Fiona/Black. To sweeten the pot, BMW Brazil throws in Harman Kardon speakers as well as the Driving Assistant, Parking Assistant Plus, and Surround View systems.

Tested: 2022 Bmw X3 M40i Is Silly Quick But Too Narrowly Focused
The 382-hp M40i proves to be a performance machine but not the complete package.
The era where mid-grade luxury SUVs can tangle with American muscle cars is upon us. Take, for example, the $58,795 BMW X3 M40i, which sits between the X3 xDrive30i and the X3 M. It’s propelled by a 382-horsepower turbocharged inline-six that rockets this SUV to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. As impressive as that stand-alone number is, the fact that it flirts with lighter and more powerful V-8equipped Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Camaros is bonkers. Those Detroit-bred icons will nudge ahead of the X3’s 12.8-second and 107-mph quarter-mile pass, but they can’t fit 24 carry-on-size boxes in their cargo hold while doing so.
Behind the X3’s new-for-2022 headlights and larger kidney grille, BMW’s ubiquitous and robust B58 3.0-liter gives a 27-hp bump over the inline-six BMW used before the 2020 model year. The engine’s ability to transform from smooth operation to a lag-free wallop of torque never fails to impress. Nor does the ZF eight-speed automatic, which has a relaxed demeanor under normal operation that mutates into an ability to snap off rapid-fire gearchanges when it’s time for business. The powertrain has been augmented by a newly added 48-volt hybrid system that fills lulls of the engine’s powerband, but if it weren’t for the buttery auto stop/start operation, its presence beneath the hood would go undetected.

It would appear that so too does BMW, since they have taken to calling their updated 2022 X3 M40i an LCI which is accurate but so is mid cycle refresh, a more commonly used turn of phrase. Our first encounter with the G01 X3 was back in 2018, and we declared the SUV X3-meley good. Eye-rolling Dad humour aside, it perfectly summed up our thoughts after spending time with BMWs luxury compact offering, which does battle in a very crowded and equally competitive segment of the market.
