If you plan on performing a marriage in New York State but outside of New York City, then you need to contact the office responsible for issuing the marriage license to the couple.That office will be able to inform you if they require ministers to register with their office before performing marriage. IN an era of six-figure weddings when couples obsess about the band playlist and hand towels for the restrooms, one question may get short shrift: Is the person performing the wedding legally able to do so?
Daniel Morales and Gwendolyn Baxter thought they knew. Their outdoor ceremony two summers ago in Farmington, Conn., was performed by a friend who had been ordained online by the Universal Life Church. Having heard of other couples who were married that way, they assumed it was legal.
But Connecticut is one of a half-dozen places that do not recognize marriages performed by someone who became a minister for the sole purpose of marrying people. Such a minister doesnt meet the requirements of the state statutes, said William Gerrish, a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Public Health.
The penalty in Connecticut for an unauthorized performance of a marriage is a fine of up to $500 and a year in jail for the officiant, though Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut attorney general, said prosecution is unlikely.
As for the marriage, the statute is clear, Mr. Blumenthal said. Nonetheless, he encouraged couples not to panic unless the issue is forced through divorce or death, the judicial system tends to grant couples the benefit of the doubt.
But, he said, They are at risk.
If two lawyers can be duped into getting married illegally, Mr. Morales said, then anybody can.

So we can see why you’d want your own loved one to help you and your soon-to-be spouse say, “I do.” It’s a personal touch on a deeply personal day.
There are several ways to get ordained online but the most popular is the Universal Life Church, a non-denominational religious organization founded in 1962 under the doctrine, “Do that which is right.” The church says it has ordained 20 million people in nearly six decades, most of whom signed up in order to be a wedding officiant.
“Unlike traditional religious organizations, we don’t require years of training or expensive courses to become a member of the clergy. Becoming ordained is free and can be done entirely online,” ULC’s website states.
But is it legal?
To get to the bottom of things, the Times Union spoke to two local attorneys who specialize in divorce and family law: Eric Tepper, who is the chair of the State Bar Association’s Family Law Section and a partner at the Glenville firm Gordon, Tepper & DeCoursey, and Leyla A. Step one is to do your research and make sure your friend or family member is legally able to officiate your wedding. Another solution is to go to the courthouse before your wedding day and pay $20 for a magistrate to perform a simple civil wedding ceremony and legally marry you. Then the public ceremony later can be performed by your friend or relative.

Practice Your Public Speaking
Before the ceremony rehearsal arrives, take time to practice reading through your script. Make notes about where to pause for effect and practice saying words that might get stuck on your tongue. This is a great way to get used to what you’ll be saying to minimize how emotional you may be on the wedding dayyou’ll be more familiar with the lines, so hopefully, you won’t get too choked up. Read through the script in front of a mirror to practice making eye contact with the couple and the audience. In addition, make sure the couple practices their lines and vows in advance, too.

Before performing the ceremony, you may need to obtain documentation proving you are a minister. These policies vary by state, and sometimes even from county to county. To determine which documents are required, contact the office that issues marriage licenses in the county where the wedding will take place. This needn’t be a long conversation just tell them you’re an ordained minister planning to perform a wedding in their county, and ask what documents they need to see from you.
Most counties will request some basic documentation such as an ordination credential, a letter of good standing, or signed statements of ministry. To the best of our knowledge, the only locations outside New York City that requires wedding officiant are certain towns on Long Island.
Our advice is to call the city or town clerks office where the couple intends to get married. That office will inform you as to whether you need to complete an application or submit your ministry credentials.
To simplify this process we recommend that you order your ministry credentials from your ordaining church just in case. Even if officiant registration is not required, it doesnt hurt to have your official ministry credentials for your own records.
