How Hard Is It To Move To New York

Honestly The Rent Is Too Damn High

10 Reasons Why You Should NEVER Move to New York City

Lets be honest, living in New York City is not realistic for a lot of people because of the astronomical cost of housing in the city.

New York City is not even in the same time zone as affordable!

I first fell in love with NYC after visiting for the first time after college, since then, Ive spent 6+ years day dreaming about living in NYC but it felt out of reach because of the cost.

I saved as much as I could to finally make the big move to New York City, but boy I dont want to fool you, it was far from easy.

The high cost of housing is why so many people live with roommates or find themselves far from the center .

If helpful, our current rent for a 600 square foot apartment on the Upper West Side is $2,800. Its charming but TINY!

The bathroom door doesnt open all the way because of a small trash can, its hilarious and sad at the same time. But as most New Yorkers will tell you, you pay for the access, not the space.

Anyways, Ill post photos of our apartment soon and will send an update through the newsletter, if youre interested.

Any Other Tips For People Ready To Move Here

  • If You Are Passionate For Something, Do It Here: As it says, everything is possible here. If you have a passion for something, make it into something. I wouldnt believe that within two years after graduating from Columbia, I can make a great living out of my passion for travel and SEO in one of the most competitive cities in the world. But see where I am now. So, you can do it as well.

  • Start Building Your Credit: If you are moving from overseas, apply for a credit card so you can start building your credit in the United States right away. Many US credit card companies won’t issue a credit card to a new arrival with no local credit history. But, you can apply for an American Express card, which allows using international credit history from selected countries.

  • Take Advantages of Leaning Opportunities: New York is home to many prestigious universities, which offer training programs on finance, computer science, and data analysis for only a few thousand. So, if you have some extra time, money and want to challenge yourself, get to one of these. Additionally, there are also learning events in the city hosted by companies that you can sign up for free.

  • Use School ID for Discounts Everywhere: If you come to New York to study as I did, dont forget to bring your school ID to unlock discounts on tickets to museums, shows, and even some restaurants, such as the Eight Turn Crepe in DeKalb Market Hall.

  • Memorizing The Address And Phone Number

It is definitely in your best interest to memorize your new address and phone number as soon as possible. Changing it on all of your accounts will also be necessary.

People who do this ahead of time are always better off in the long run. As soon as you know what it is, get busy remembering it so that you dont have to look it up all of the time.

Also, check with the post office on forwarding your mail when you are making a move to the city. You dont want to miss out on your mail, so be sure to do what it takes to make a move that will work the best for you now and in the future.

The more organized you are, the smoother the move will go.

It depends on your lifestyle and the sacrifices youre willing to make! OK with roommates? NYC just became a lot more affordable! Value your independence? A 1 bedroom unit wont come cheap.

Theoretically you can live in NYC with a salary of 40k a year. Youll have roommates and wont be eating out at sit-down restaurants too often. Whats more, Broadway shows and rooftop bars will be reserved for special occasions.

Why Are People Moving From New York To Georgia

Dumbo, Brooklyn: Preserved in Amber. Sort Of.

A desire for a warmer climate and the high cost of living in New York are driving people out of the state. Heavy congestion and long commutes add to the frustration.

Georgia, on the other hand, continues to attract new people. The cost of land is cheap, so a starter family can build their dream home for less. Cities like Atlanta offer numerous job opportunities to new college grads and the cost of living is low in many Georgia cities for new retirees.

In addition to making sacrifices, you should also be open to other options. In fact, being flexible is part of learning how to find an apartment in NYC. Art And Diversity: Welcome To Brooklyn And Queens

Brooklyn is the most populous of the five boroughs and home to people of various cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds. It boasts its very own arts scene and a great deal of noteworthy architecture. This is also where you will find Coney Island, one of the oldest amusements parks in the country, located on Brooklynâs long beachfront.

Some neighborhoods recommended for families are Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, and Williamsburg, all of which have low crime statistics, a lot of green spaces, and good public schools. While prices for accommodation are very high in these areas, they do reflect good value for money.

Queens is the largest borough in terms of surface area, and itâs among the most ethnically diverse communities in the whole country. The growing population is a good indicator for the popularity of Queensâ mostly residential and middle class neighborhoods, such as Sunnyside, Woodside, and Jackson Heights. Queens is also home to two of New Yorkâs international airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport and La Guardia Airport.

    Youll Have Access To World

Perhaps my favorite thing about living in New York City is having access to world-class museums. New York City is home to a whopping 83 museums, including the fifth largest museum in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art .

Youll be hard pressed to find a more culturally exciting city than New York. For example, my friend starts every weekend by exploring a museum with her kids and at the rate shes going, her kids will see more world-renowned art by the age of 7 than most people do in a lifetime!

Visa Categories: Theres More Than Just The Green Card

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services distinguish between immigrant visas and nonimmigrant visas. For immigrant visas, there are five preference categories for employment-based immigration, EB-1 through EB-5, along with the infamous Green Card, officially called the Diversity Visa Program. On the website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, you can find more information on the Green Card Lottery.

Preference categories EB-2, EB-3 and EB-4 are for people with high qualifications and/or special skills required for a particular job in the US. The onus of proof, so to speak, lies with your prospective employer, in the sense that they must obtain an approved Labor Certification from the US Department of Labor.

This certification must provide evidence that, firstly, no equally suitable US candidate could be found to fill the vacant position. Secondly, it should prove that working conditions and wages of US citizens in similar jobs will not be adversely affected by hiring an overseas worker.

Employers will not need to acquire a Labor Certification for expats in academics, executives of multinational companies, outstanding artists, internationally renowned athletes, and foreign investors . You can read more about immigrant visas and permanent workers on the USCISâ website.

My sister is currently in the process of moving to NYC and asked me this very question six months ago. The answer will vary vastly depending on your standard of living, but I suggest saving a minimum of $20,000 before moving to New York City.

    A Little Bit Of History

New York had to go through rather a lot of changes before it became the heaving metropolis it is today. Starting out as a Native American settlement , the area was taken over by the Dutch in 1624. It was known as New Amsterdam, but only for 40 years in 1664, the British arrived and decided it had a passing resemblance to the northern English city of York.

Word passed around, and New York became the talk of the world. In the 19th and 20th centuries, things really kicked off, as the city took in a huge influx of immigrants from across the continents. This created a multicultural melting pot of different cultures that would utterly redefine the city. On New Years Day, 1898, the five independent cities of Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, the Bronx, and Manhattan combined to form Greater New York, and the modern-day City of Dreams was born.
