Canal Street in NYCs Chinatown is infamous for discount shopping. However, I caution you that its not without its own challenges due to the illegality and stealth of this type of shopping.
First, its primarily knock offs and lots of aggressive sellers who expect you to bargain.
Second, these types of items are not visible in the stalls. They are in hidden back rooms or basements so, for your safety, make sure to shop with a friend. You will be approached with someone whispering all different types of brand names . If you seem interested, they will ask you to follow them. Use your own judgement and instincts.
Thirdly, cash is king . I usually make sure to carry small bills and large bills, separated amongst my different pockets .
You dont want to haggle someone down to $12 and then try paying with a $50 billbe very mindful of your cash and dont flash it about attracting lots of attention.

There are many malls in NYC, but we cant forget about the malls close to the city as well. Approx. 200,000 square meters filled with 400 stores Garden State Plaza promises the ultimate shopping experience. It is the largest mall in the state of New Jersey, and it is only 12.5 miles away from Manhattan. If you are an avid shopper, your pulse will double once you arrive in the small town of Paramus, New Jersey. You will also be saving here as you shop due to New Jersey not having a sales tax on shoes and clothing.
Due to its size, the selection at the Garden State Plaza Mall is huge. Outlets often feature many unknown brands trying to pedal their leftover products from the previous season but not here. Our jaws dropped when we looked at the map to see which stores could be found in the mall. In addition to the big department stores like Macys, J.C. Penney, Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, and Neiman Marcus you will also find other great name-brand stores like Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, Superdry, Apple, and Abercrombie.

Zoffany At Saks Fifth Avenue
Window shopping just got a bit more artful as the textile and wallpaper atelier Zoffany has installed a number of their fashion-worthy patterns in the front displays of Saks Fifth Avenues Manhattan flagship. Originally designed in the 1950s and 60s, the Palladio collection was installed in public areas around Great Britain to bring art to the community following World War II. Tanger Outlets Riverhead New York & Deer Park New York
The Tanger Outlets are also not far from NYC you can get there in about 1.5 hours and enjoy the shopping paradise on Long Island. Both the Riverhead and the Deer Park Outlet are great places to shop. We bought stacks of athletic wear here for reduced prices on our last trip to NYC. Since we had rented a car it was easy for us to swing by and snap up some great deals. If you are going to these outlets in the summer, I recommend taking a trip to the beach which is not far away! We took a tour to the Hamptons this summer and ended our tour at the Tanger Outlets.

H& m In Times Square & Herald Square
The H& M stores at Times Square& Herald Square are futuristic and modern and not much like their other stores throughout the world. Since its grand opening in the fall of 2015, H& M trends originate and are tested in these two stores. With a huge selection of new items and ranges as well as entertainment by a daily DJ, the brand has created a very special atmosphere in these two stores. Even the store personnel seems to celebrate working at H& M in Times Square or Herald Square.
Take note of the fact the store re-arranges, re-decorates, and replenishes inventory daily, meaning items are always arranged differently. This can become a difficulty when trying to find that one piece of clothing you tried on yesterday but decided to sleep on buying. H& M has a total of 35 NYC locations meaning that you will see many of their shops around, however, their flagship stores at Times Square and Herald Square are by far the most impressive.

When trying to explain this shift to people back home, Ive found the best example to be grocery shopping- everyone buys groceries and the difference between shopping in the city and shopping back in Missouri could not be more stark.

Housing Works Thrift Store
I come here for the bookstore next door but if I have time, I stop by the thrift store, which has some pretty epic deals that even appeal to this non-shopper right here.
Plus, I just LOVE Housing Works Thrift Store and its social consciousness.
Believe it or not, all the proceeds from this thrift shop go towards aid for the homeless and those afflicted with the AIDS virus.
Therefore, while shopping here, you can feel good because youre actually doing something for the good of humanity.
And while youre here you can even sell some of your own goods or just cruise the racks for vintage designs by Gucci, Givenchy, DVF, etc.
Because this really is one of the best cheap clothing stores in NYC.

You can usually obtain discounted bus tickets online from Get Your Guide, Groupon or Living Social
Plan ahead by reviewing their map so that you can select your stores and map out a route for your visit
Make sure to grab a locker or two so that you can have a place to leave your purchases as you shop
At the information center, you can pick up a discount booklet, along with online coupons available on their site
Bring a few larger shopping bags so that you can merge smaller packages into one bag or a few bags
Lastly, if you decide not to drive and take the bus, arrive to the pick-up line at least 30-40 min before your bus is scheduled to leave. Sometimes there are more people ready to leave than seats available on the bus, so you might need to wait for the next one.

Empire Outlets New York City
The new kid on the block is the Empire Outlets New York City, also known as Harbor Commons, in the St. George Neighborhood of Staten Island. Its a 350,000 square foot retail shopping area that was recently opened in May 2019. I think it is definitely a place worth visiting, even if only for the view.
You definitely cant go wrong. But since we are here for the budget shopping, it is convenient for people who want to enjoy walking along, while also seeing the views of the Statue of Liberty and of the NYC skyline for free! And then going shopping on a budget while on the other side.
Keep in mind that, so far, only certain stores are open but not all as of yet but its still awesome to find outlet prices, especially for the same items that you would normally have paid a 20% markup in Manhattan.
One of the stores included above on this list is there, Nordstrom Rack, and you can also find other stores such as Guess Factory Store, Gap Factory Store, Nike Factory Store, Old Navy Outlet, and much more, including dining coming soon.
