The History Of Warsaw
Warsaw is nestled in the lush quiet valley in Wyoming County. The area was first settled by Elizur Webster in 1803. Seeing the beauty of the area and the prospect of what could be, he proceeded to the Holland Land Office at Batavia to negotiate a purchase of more than 3,000 acres lying mostly along Oatka Creek at $1.50 per acre.
The town of Warsaw was formed from a portion of the Town of Batavia March 19, 1818. It is six miles square being bounded on the north side by Middlebury, on the west side is Orangeville, Gainesville on the south side and Perry being on the east.
Warsaw is located in Wyoming County, New York and is the county seat. The Village of Warsaw is divided north and south by valleys in which there is located two major railroads, the Erie Railroad on the west and the B.R. & P. Railroad on the east.
As more settlers entered the town, Warsaw became prosperous with businesses becoming more visible. Economic development with various industries such as salt, stone quarries, and mills were being built. Agriculture was on the rise, roads and bridges were being made, people of religious beliefs were building numerous churches, and schools.
The Civil War saw 194 men from Warsaw go off to war to defend the Union. To honor all Veterans, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument was built in 1878 by the compassionate men of the area.
This monument still stands today in the center of the village as a testament to all Veterans who served their country.

The History Of The Village
The Town of Warsaw began with the purchase by Elizur Webster of land from the Holland Land Company in 1803. He bought approximately 3,000 acres of land in the Oatka Creek Valley. After building a log house at a site now commemorated with a plaque on South Main Street, Mr. Webster returned to Hampton, New York to bring his wife and two other families back to the settlement. The Town was part of Genesee County until 1841.
Throughout its history, Wyoming Countys economy has depended on a mixture of agriculture and manufacturing. Early manufactures supplied lumber, flour, matchsticks, map rollers, and cast iron. In 1881, the Warsaw Salt company was organized. Until 1899, Warsaw was the center of salt manufacturing in the United States. As many as 13 different companies produced and shipped salt out of the town. By 1900, few of these companies still operated. One that did survive was the Worchester Salt plant, which became the nucleus of the Morton Salt Company.
The closing of the salt plants spawned a brief resurgence of manufacturing in the town, as the money from the sales of the salt works was funneled into new enterprises. Some of these included knitting mills, the Warsaw Button Company, and the Warsaw Elevator Company. Only one of these companies survives in Warsaw today the Warsaw Box Company was established near the turn of the century, and still does business under the name of the Fairview Paper Box Corporation.

Other sources indicate that the gully is part of the adjacent village park. I have not been able to investigate too deeply. As of September 2008 there are no posted signs indicating that this is private property. We ask that if you attempt to visit this site, you are respectful of any signs that you come across. Waterway: Stony Creek, a tributary to Oatka Creek. Stony Creek begins about 6 miles northeast of here at the Attica Reservoir, slowing through farmland until it passes through a tunnel under the Erie-Lackawanna RR just before falling down Warsaw Falls. It then passes through the southwest corner of the village of Warsaw and then connects with Oatka Creek. Oatka flows northeast along the Wyoming Valley and empties into the Genesee River near Scottsville. The Genesee River is a major tributary to Lake Ontario.
