Our Methodology For Selecting Hotels

Much of travel is, in truth, subjective. One person might love city hotels and another will loathe the noise and crowds. Similarly, one traveler might simply seek a place to rest their head and another will want to be dazzled and delighted by luxury at every turn. Others have kids to entertain, business to tend to, and an itinerary to work around. Of course, all of these people do have in common: they all set a budget, whether it’s looking for a cheap hotel or five-star luxury at an expected price.

For these reasons, this list of hotels offers a mix of all of these factors including:

Price: We chose budget, mid-range, and luxury hotels in New York City ranging from bare-bones bunk rooms to standard hotel rooms and indulgent suites. We only accepted starting room rates in low season under $800 per night.

Value: Price is one thing, but value is another. We chose hotels in New York City that offered strong value for the money such as large rooms, great views, good on-site amenities, excellent service, central locations, and more.

Location: The best hotels in New York City represent a wide range of neighborhoods across Manhattan from the Upper East Side to TriBeCa and the Financial District in lower Manhattan. We also reviewed hotels in Brooklyn.

Reviews: We read and consulted past guest reviews and ratings on sites such as Trip Advisor, Hotels.com, Booking.com, and others to ensure that the majority of past guest experiences were overwhelmingly positive.

Why Is Central Park One Of The Best Places To Stay In Nyc

This area is where to stay for a relaxing, quiet and calm New York City visit but with fairly easy access to the touristy spots in Midtown and Downtown Manhattan.

It is a very safe area, extremely family friendly and more upmarket than the likes of Times Square. Those who prefer to travel in luxury should look at hotels in Upper East Side.

Visitors who would like to walk or run around Central Park on a morning couldnt ask for a better location. Subway access is good but not the best. However, this is a very walkable part of the city.

It does take longer to reach the top sights in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, plus this is a more expensive area in general to stay and eat for those traveling on a budget to consider.

Best Cheap Mid Budget And Luxury Hotels Near Central Park New York City

Things to do

Central Park hotels are abundant but do tend to span the higher price point bracket. A budget hotel around Central Park could cost more than a Mid Range hotel in Times Square.

We stayed at 1 Central Hotel and it was fantastic. The materials of wood with wrought iron were elegant and relaxing. It reminded us of when we stayed in traditional Ryokans in Japan.

The Whitby Hotel has a 9.5 rating, which is the joint highest Booking.com rating in New York City . We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea in the Whitby Hotel bar area.

The Mark Upper East Side

You probably recognize the exterior of The Mark. Why? Because every Monday in May, its in the background of a million paparazzi photos as celebrities from Lady Gaga to Kendall Jenner depart from its lobby to the Met Gala.

Its inside is of equal grandeur: designed by Jacques Grange, who also did interiors for Yves Saint Laurent and the Princess of Monaco, the lobby is adorned in bold black and white stripes. Added bonus: Its restaurant, The Mark by by Jean-Georges, is divine. Order their cheeseburger with black truffle dressing.

Like The Carlyle, its located in close proximity to many major museums and is half a block from Central Parkof which some suites even have an expansive view.

What Are The Best Neighborhoods To Stay In When Visiting New York City

If you’re a first-time visitor who wants to see the lights of Broadway and stay in the center of the action, you’re probably looking at Times Square. However, to feel more of a local, neighborhood vibe, consider staying in atmospheric neighborhoods such as Chelsea, Flatiron, NoMad, or adjacent areas of Midtown such as Bryant Park to experience fewer crowds.

If you’ve been to New York before, or are open to other areas, we recommend heading downtown to TriBeCa or across the bridge to Williamsburg or DUMBO in Brooklyn, all of which have great hotels .

Amazing Citythat You Have To Visit Once In Your Life

New York New York Hotel and Casino Reopening Tour (is it safe?)

Amazing city, that you have to visit once in your life. Plan longer stay, because its so many things to see and do here. I spent two days in Met Museum only. I recomand you to go to the Park Line and Chelsea Market, you should visit DUMBO and If you have time Hoboken. The best part of NYC is Soho with cast iron buildings. I like everything about this city except you should keep in mind its expencive and easely you can spend 100$ a day.You can eat good food for less money in chain restaurant named Essen. The hotels are pricey also, especialy if you go there in spring time wich is best part of the year to visit.

Yolanda welcomed us and showed us everything. The two bedrooms on ground floor are huge. One faces street, the other the garden. We loved the comfy king size bed and the space. Our room was dark, but the windows are sound proof, the aircon was comfortable, and it was great to relax after busy days out and about. The upstair is beautifully restored and renovated, with a spacious fully equipped kitchen, dining and relaxing area. And then of course there’s the patio and little garden. The borough has a great vibe and we always felt safe. Central Park, Hudson River Park and bicycle rentals are close by. A wonderful oasis in Manhattan.

Times Square Where To Stay In New York City On A Budget

Times Square is home to those famous flashing lights and the New Years Eve ball drop. It is the beating heart of touristy Midtown Manhattan and attracts millions of visitors each year.

When you started researching where to stay in New York City, was Times Square the first place you searched for on a map?

Its nothing to be ashamed of, almost all first time visitors to NYC book a hotel somewhere in or near Times Square.

Now, thats not a bad thing. Times Square is arguably the best place in NYC to book a budget hotel and it is ideally located for a huge portion of bucket list attractions.

However, it is a gritty area, renowned for pickpockets and tourist traps. That doesnt mean dont book a hotel here, it just means be aware that there are more attractive areas to stay in New York City.

Confession: We didnt visit the SoHo area until our penultimate weekend living in NYC. After that we visited twice more because we enjoyed it so much.

SoHo stands for South of Houston Street and despite being crowded, its cobblestone streets and high end shops make it a very quaint place to walk around.

It is always packed wall to wall with tourists and locals, restaurants are overflowing with no chance of getting a table unless you reserve ahead of time and theres a natural feel good aura.

Our Personal Top Hotel Recommendation For New York

Our favorite hotel in New York is the citizenM Hotel just off of Times Square, which offers excellent value for money in a perfect location. We had already stayed at a citizenM in Rotterdam before and were really impressed with it.

Each hotel only has a single room category, and all the rooms have the same layout with super-modern furnishings. Were total fans of citizenM and would recommend the hotel to anyone.

A new CitizenM recently opened in the Bowery. If youve been to New York before and dont want to stay around Times Square, then the citizenM in Bowery is a great alternative.

    Neighborhood: Lower East Side

    Whats on New York City

Part of the gentrification of the once gritty Lower East Side, the Ludlow opened in 2014 opposite Katzs Delicatessen. The days of artists living in cheap lofts are long gone, but the hotel lobby evokes a louche 1980s vibe of dive bars and underground recording studios, with a sociable work-rest-and-play space with low-slung leather sofas and giant Marshall speakers.

Bedrooms are bright and breezy, and most have incredible views over the city. A perk of staying in this place is that you can also leapfrog the techpreneurs and art-world hotshots who hang out here to get into the popular ground-floor restaurant, Dirty French, which is always booked up. JK

    Lower East Side & Soho

The Lower East Side and SoHo are two super cool neighborhoods, located very close to each other. Theyre not that big either, which is why I decided to combine them into a single recommendation. Theyre pretty similar as well and theyre great choices especially for people who have been to New York City before!

NOTE: SoHo in New York is different from the Soho in London, so please dont mix them up!

Please keep in mind that both of these areas are residential, so they lack popular landmarks, but theyre still pretty close to the main attractions in the city center .

Another nice activity to do here is just to take a walk on the streets and try out new restaurants, cafes and shops for all pockets and preferences . And if youre a fashion lover, SoHo is for you! Ah, and if youre staying in the Lower East Side, youll be walking distance to Little Italy and Chinatown as well bonus points!

How To Choose The Right Hotel

The key to choosing the best hotel in the perfect area is to ask yourself three questions:

    • First What are the best things to do in NYC that you just cant miss?
    • Second Do you want to be in thick of the action or more relaxed on the periphery?
    • Third How much money do you want to spend?

If youre not sure about the answers to any of those questions, we will cover everything you need to know in this guide.

But if you already know exactly what you want to do in NYC, pin them on a map and look at where the highest concentration of pins are located. That will give you a good idea about which areas you will spend most of your time.

We will show you some of the top rated hotels in each area so you can get booked up in advance. Then you can start working on the fun part building your bucket list NYC itinerary.
