Skate Into The New Year
Ok, disclaimer: I cant skate. In fact I hate the whole idea of slipping and sliding so I dont ski either, but for those who do not share my phobia, here are three great places to ice skate in NYC.
The Rockefeller Center Ice Rink, under the famous Christmas tree, is a hot spot in the cold climate over winter. Even just wandering past to take a few photos is a must , and the experience is an affordable way to enjoy the city.
But if the busyness of the Rockefeller Center intimidates you, then you can visit one of the many other ice rinks that pop up across the city.
In fact skating at Central Park is just as iconic as the Rockefeller rink.
For a more inclusive NYC tourism experience, you can book a Central Park ice skating and walking tour.
Or head to the pop-up Winter Village in Bryant Park and don your skates there then shop in the surrounding market stalls and grab a bite to eat.

Celebrate New Years Eve in New York City
You can spend the evening away from Times Square. There are a lot of events in the city and fireworks where you can shout the final countdown!
Go for a swim during or before the new year!!!
2 unusual events are happening during winter time, but beware, this is only for the braves and is an open call to all swimmers out there who want to take a chance to swim in the frozen water of the Atlantic. The first one is a ritual that started in 1903 on New Years Day in the south of Brooklyn: its the Coney Island Polar Bear Club. The second one is taking place on December 7 in Staten Island: its the Polar Plunge.

New Years Eve In Times Square
If youre willing to brave the cold and crowds, the stars that perform might make it worth your while. This is covered on over 1,000 websites, so I wont spend much time on it. After all, this is the non-tourist tourist guide to NYC and NO self-respecting New Yorkers do this on NYE. If you really want to see the ball drop in comfort, check out these Times Square Ball Drop Parties
If not the private party, then expect freezing temperatures outside for 7 or more hours, elbow to elbow with over 700,000 people, no bathrooms, backpacks or beverages. Once the ball drops, it will be an hour before you can even leave Times Square.
I did this when I was 16 years old, and its nice to be able to say you did it once, but you couldnt pay me to do it again. Feeling Brave? timessquarenyc.org and newyearseve.nyc have the info you need and balldrop.com has tons of parties and tickets listed!
