NEW YORK The New York State Department of Labor announced the state’s $15 minimum wage phase-in will continue, with the next stage taking effect December 31, 2021.
This announcement follows a report done by the Divisions of the Budget that showed pressure for wages to rise in the midst of a pandemic-driven labor shortage.
Hourly employees in Western New York and the rest of the state outside of New York City, Long Island, and Westchester will make at least $13.20 an hour once the change takes effect.
Companies, particularly those that employ low-wage workers, are already raising wages and in some cases offering incentives to hire amid a labor shortage that is showing no sign of abating, and it makes sense to raise the wage floor now and continue supporting New Yorks families while providing a predictable path forward for businesses, Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said. With todays action, we are continuing the work of building back with equity and justice.
Future increases that will eventually reach $15 an hour will be determined by the division of budget at the department of labor, which will come after an analysis of the previous increases.

The West New York Board of Commissioners passed an ordinance last night that will raise the minimum wage for municipal employees to $15 an hour the law is similar to one that recently passed in Jersey City raising the municipal employee minimum wage there to $17 an hour.
The commissioners and I are proud to take this important step that puts West New York on the forefront of ensuring that our employees earn a living wage and are able to take care of their families in the same way that they take care of our community every day, West New York Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez said in a statement.
Statewide, the minimum wage wont reach $15 until 2024, per a bill signed into law by Gov. Phil Murphy that phased in a minimum wage increase over the course of several years. The current state minimum wage is $12, which is what it will for now remain for non-municipal employees in West New York.

Ever since the New York State Department of Labor announced an increase in the minimum wage from $12.50 per hour to $13.20 per hour in areas outside of New York City, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties effective Dec. 31, 2021, we have been expecting a proportionate increase in the minimum weekly salary to qualify for the executive and administrative exemptions. Albany, N.Y. A 5.6% increase in the minimum wage will take effect in Upstate New York later this month.
Minimum wage for Upstate workers will go from $12.50 an hour to $13.20, according to the state Labor Department. The change takes effect Dec. 31 and affects employees everywhere outside New York City, Long Island and Westchester County.
The 70 cent an hour increase means an extra $28 a week for someone working a full-time minimum wage job.
New York established a tiered schedule of minimum wage increases in 2016, with the goal of eventually raising the wage to $15 an hour everywhere.
Minimum wage workers in New York City already earn $15 an hour. The wage will rise from $14 an hour to $15 for Long Island and Westchester at the end of the year.
Although the goal is also $15 an hour for Upstate, annual increases for the region are determined each year by the commissioner of labor based on economic indices, including the Consumer Price Index.
Fast food workers were on a different schedule for raises. They already earn $15 an hour everywhere in the state.
