Its May 1 Rent Is Due And The #cancelrent Movement Is Growing

From New York to Los Angeles, tenants rights groups and community nonprofits are encouraging tenants to withhold payments today, the due date for May rent.

As unemployment soars across the country, the groups have rallied around an audacious goal: to persuade the government to halt rent and mortgage payments without back payments accruing for as long as the economy is battered by the coronavirus.

Its a moment that people are literally rising up for real transformation in the housing market, said Cea Weaver, the campaign coordinator at Housing Justice for All in New York.

New York State and New Jersey already have moratoriums on evictions.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, endorsed the campaign, encouraging her progressive base to embrace a movement to upend the housing market.

But in New York and other cities, landlords say they too are struggling to pay their bills since many tenants have already been unable to pay rent.

They say that withholding rent would create cascading consequences, leaving them unable to pay mortgages and taxes and maintain buildings.

A Paramedic From Colorado Who Came To Nyc To Help Fight The Virus Has Died Of It

A visiting paramedic from Aurora, Colo., Paul Cary, 66,died of the coronavirus, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Friday.

Mr. Cary was one of thousands of health care workers from around the country who flooded New York to help shore up the citys overwhelmed health care system.

So many people came to help, but Paul gave his life for us, the mayor said. He said the city would erect a memorial to him.

New Jersey Is Now Reporting More Virus Deaths Per Day Than New York

Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey reported another 311 deaths from the coronavirus on Friday.

It was a drop from Thursday, when the state reported 460 deaths. State health officials explained on Friday that the number of deaths reported on any given day includes many deaths that can go back weeks and are newly classified as virus-related.

But Friday was the second straight day that New Jersey reported more daily deaths than New York, which has more than twice as many people.

Even as the viruss effects have waned in New York, New Jerseys progress against the virus on some fronts remains days or weeks behind.

In the last few days, virus patients have been entering hospitals, remaining in hospitals, and testing positive in New Jersey at considerably higher rates, per capita, than in New York.

Mr. Murphys announcement of the deaths came as New Jerseys state and county parks are all set to reopen on Saturday. So are golf courses, with extensive social distancing rules in place.

He said New Jersey residents were being trusted with a big test this weekend, and he urged people to wear masks and avoid knucklehead behavior with people ignoring social distancing.

If we see that again we will not hesitate to close the parks, he said. We are not out of the woods yet.

Mr. Murphy also said that he was issuing an order allowing marriages in New Jersey to be performed over videoconferencing.

Macys Unveils Plans To Reopen Stores With Masks Hand Sanitizer And Plexiglass Barriers

No touch consultations will be the rule at beauty counters. Ear piercing, bra fittings and alterations will be temporarily suspended. Fitting rooms will be limited. Employees will wear company-issued cloth masks. And trying on dress shirts? Forget about it.

Macys, one of the biggest department store chains in the United States, is aiming to reopen all of its 775 stores, including Bloomingdales, Bluemercury and its major flagships in Manhattan, in the next six to eight weeks, the latest sign of how eager the nations largest retailers are to return to business.

The reopenings are expected to start on Monday, with 68 stores in Georgia, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Macys will reopen 50 more locations on May 11. The companys stores have been closed since March 18 because of the coronavirus pandemic, causing the majority of its sales to dry up.

In a presentation on Thursday, Macys illustrated what the new shopping experience might look like: Stores will be filled with signs reminding customers to stand six feet apart, plexiglass barriers will be installed at cash registers and hand sanitizer stations will be placed by elevators and escalators.

Even before the pandemic, foot traffic to stores had been down, and it remains to be seen whether shoppers will venture into these newly restricted environments while the country continues to deal with a highly contagious virus.

New York City Public School Students Celebrate End Of Difficult Year While Doe Prepares To Move Forward

New York Schools Remain Closed Through End Of School Year, Summer School Plans Not Yet Decided

NEW YORK New York City public school students celebrated the end of a difficult year Friday, and now the Department of Education is preparing to move forward.

The last day of school is always a celebration, but after an unimaginable year, Mayor Bill de Blasio and schools chancellor Meisha Ross Porter got in on the fun at PS/MS 34.

“Did we think we’d be playing kickball on the last day of school in 2021? No sir, and thank god we are,” de Blasio said.

The rollercoaster of a year was delayed by negotiations over COVID protocols and marked by school closures due to COVID cases while juggling remote and in-person learning.

“I was mom, I was lunch lady, I was teacher, and it’s not only one. I have three at home,” parent Tiffany Velez told CBS2’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas.

“It was challenging. The children, they had to get adjusted to online learning,” parent Sharonda Gantt said.

About 60% of students across the system have been learning remotely since March of 2020. Now, administrators are looking ahead to the fall, when everyone is required to return to school in person.

In Corona, Queens, schools are already determining students’ needs.

“We’re doing assessments now to do little check-ins with students to see where they are, how much learning loss has occurred and how we can try to bring them up to level again,” said Beth Tekverk, director of early childhood education District 24.

The focus is on academic and emotional recovery.

The Last Patients At The Javits Center Temporary Hospital Will Be Released Today

The last eight patients at the Jacob K. Javits Center, the sprawling glass complex in Manhattan that was turned into a makeshift 2,500-bed hospital, are expected to be discharged or transferred today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said.

A New York State official confirmed that the Javits Center was winding down, but noted that Governor Cuomo has said he wants to keep the facility on standby in case the extra beds are needed in the fall for a second wave of virus cases, a heavy flu season, or both.

A spokesman for Northwell Health, which has overseen clinical operations at the Javits Center, said it had cared for 1,093 patients in total.

Like the Navy hospital ship Comfort, which left New York on Thursday, the Javits Center never came close to reaching its capacity.

With Lovely Weather Ahead Mayor Closes Streets But Warns We Cannot Let Up Now

N.Y.C. to Reopen Middle Schools, but Most Students Will Still Learn ...

On the first day of May, with 70-degree temperatures expected on Saturday, Mayor de Blasio pleaded with New Yorkers on Friday to resist the impulse to gather outdoors and warned of the dangers still presented by the coronavirus.

His warnings came as other states across the country had already begun to reopen.

The nice weather is very much a threat to us, Mr. de Blasio said on WNYC radio.

The mayor also announced that seven miles of streets inside and near city parks will close to vehicle traffic on Saturday the first installment in a planned 40 miles of closings to give New Yorkers places to play and walk, with playgrounds across the city closed.

The closures were originally scheduled for Monday, but on Friday night, Mr. de Blasio said on Twitter that city agencies and the Police Department would start the program early.

The streets outside parks include ones near Williamsbridge Oval in the Bronx, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and Carl Schurz Park in Manhattan. The ones inside parks include Fort Tryon Park in Manhattan, Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, and Silver Lake Park on Staten Island.

The New York Police Department also said it would deploy more than 1,000 officers across the city over the weekend to ensure that people were properly social distancing.

But he also said that 202 people in the city had died of the virus yesterday, and more than 2,600 new cases were confirmed.

Schools Across Ny State Will Stay Closed Through The End Of The School Year Cuomo Says

Schools throughout New York State will remain shuttered through the end of the school year, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Friday, confirming what educators, union leaders and Mayor Bill de Blasio had said was inevitable weeks earlier.

We dont think its possible to reopen schools in a way that would keep our children and students and educators safe, Mr. Cuomo said.

Mr. de Blasio announced April 11 that New York Citys 1,800 public schools would not reopen until September, but Mr. Cuomo said he alone had the authority to rule on school reopening dates, and said the mayors ruling was merely his opinion.

The spat between the governor and mayor over schools was seen as a low point in their dysfunctional relationship.

While there was never a good chance that schools would reopen this academic year, the shape of summer instruction and next school year remain murky. Though schools have continued their instruction online, many students are falling behind academically.

The city has not yet released a plan for online summer school. Though the mayor has said he expects schools to reopen in September, schools chancellor Richard A. Carranza has said the city is planning for any eventuality this fall.

Mr. Cuomo said the states summer school plans will be determined by the end of May.

He also gave the states daily virus statistics:

Were Going To Have The Schools Remain Closed Cuomo Says

Mass Shooting At Texas School Comes Just Days After Buffalo Massacre

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York announced that schools would stay closed through the end of the school year, and that summer school plans would be determined by the end of May.

Our past actions changed the past trajectory. Our present actions will determine the future trajectory. It is that clear. It is cause and effect. You tell me what we do today, I will tell you the number of people sick tomorrow. Were going to have the schools remain closed for the rest of the year. Were going to continue the distance learning programs. Schools have asked about summer school, and whether well have attendance in schools for summer school. That decision will be made by the end of this month. Again, nobody can predict what the situation is going to be three, four weeks from now. So were trying to stage decisions at intervals that give us the information, but also enough time for people to make the preparations they need to make.
