Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo says that most pandemic capacity restrictions will ease in two weeks. Mayor Bill de Blasio says he wants the city to fully reopen on July 1. But Broadway, a beacon for tourists and an engine for the economy, is not quite ready to turn on the stage lights.

Most shows are not planning performances until September or later. But there are signs of life: Mr. Cuomo said Wednesday that Broadway shows would start selling tickets for full-capacity shows with some performances starting Sept. 14.

Why the four-month wait? With as many as eight shows a week to fill, and the tourists who make up an important part of their customer base yet to return, producers need time to advertise and market. They need to reassemble and rehearse casts who have been out of work for more than a year. And they need to sort out and negotiate safety protocols.

Weve never done this before, said Victoria Bailey, executive director of TDF, the nonprofit which oversees the TKTS ticket-selling booth in Times Square. The last time the theater industry opened from a pandemic, Shakespeare was still writing new plays.

Resurgeance In Early 1980s

In early 1982, Joe Papp, the theatrical producer and director who established The Public Theater, led the “Save the Theatres” campaign. It was a not-for-profit group supported by the Actors Equity union to save the theater buildings in the neighborhood from demolition by monied Manhattan development interests. Papp provided resources, recruited a publicist and celebrated actors, and provided audio, lighting, and technical crews for the effort.

At Papp’s behest, in July 1982, a bill was introduced in the 97th Congress, entitled “H.R.6885, A bill to designate the Broadway/Times Square Theatre District in the City of New York as a national historic site”. The legislation would have provided certain U.S. government resources and assistance to help the city preserve the district. Faced with strong opposition and lobbying by Mayor Ed Koch’s Administration and corporate Manhattan development interests, the bill was not passed. The Save the Theatres campaign then turned their efforts to supporting the establishment of the Theater District as a registered historic district. In December 1983, Save the Theatres prepared “The Broadway Theater District, a Preservation Development and Management Plan”, and demanded that each theater in the district receive landmark designation. Mayor Ed Koch ultimately reacted by creating a Theater Advisory Council, which included Papp.

These Are Some Of The Broadway Performances Canceled Over Covid

Several Broadway shows were forced to cancel performances this week due to positive Covid-19 tests among the cast or crew, a setback for the industry that comes just months after it raised the curtain on an 18-month shutdown due to the pandemic.

Since its return, Broadway has required eligible audiences, crews, performers and other staff to be vaccinated against Covid-19. This week, the Broadway League, a trade association for the industry, began enforcing a new vaccination and mask policy for children.

The precautions are designed to ensure the show goes on in an industry that is a vital to New York Citys economy and supports about 97,000 jobs, according to the Broadway League. The group said Broadway contributed $14.7 billion to the citys economy in the 2018-2019 season.

Aladdin became the first Broadway show known to cancel performances due to Covid-19 when it called off multiple shows in September.

What Is The Difference Between Broadway And Off

If youre new to the world of theater, you may wonder what exactly the difference between Broadway and Off-Broadway is. Broadway is New Yorks official theater district. In order to qualify as a Broadway theater, the theater

  • needs to be located between 40th and 54th St. and between 6th and 8th Ave and
  • its capacity must exceed 500 seats. Theaters with lower capacities are considered Off-Broadway. You could, therefore, say that Off-Broadway shows are typically smaller. They can be located anywhere throughout the city.

Why Are So Many Broadway Shows Closing

NEW YORK – JANUARY 26: Ben Crawford as “The Phantom” makes a curtain speech after the curtain call … at The 34th Anniversary Performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of The Opera” on Broadway at The Majestic Theater on January 26, 2022 in New York City. New York is the premier travel destination in the United States. One of the biggest draws in New York is Broadway, long known as the great white way because of the lights glittering over the theaters.

Just when New York should be recovering from the pandemic, which President Biden declared over in September, significant numbers of Broadway shows have shuttered or announced their closing.

Culprits include costs, COVID and crime. All have chased away free-spending tourists and Broadway customers, who are basically the same people.

Despite an average Broadway price of $113.29 per ticket, many shows struggled to break even, with high production costs and soft sales. Gross income on ticket sales declined from 33 million per week in May to 20 million in September.

When Broadway reopened last fall after an 18-month COVID shutdown, all productions, new and old, basically re-started from zero. That meant that formerly reliable warhorses were competing with new shows.

Meanwhile, many COVID-shy theater goers are still reluctant to travel to Broadway and sit in a theater with hundreds of others.
