The subway is a popular venue for busking. A permit is not required to perform, but certain codes of conduct are required. Some buskers are affiliated with Music Under New York , a part of the Arts & Design program by the MTA. Since 1987, MTA has sponsored the MUNY program in which street musicians enter a competitive contest to be assigned to the preferred high traffic locations. Each year, applications are reviewed and approximately 70 eligible performers are selected and contacted to participate in live auditions held for one day.
From 1941 to 1976, the Board of Transportation/New York City Transit Authority sponsored the “Miss Subways” publicity campaign. In the musical On the Town, the character Miss Turnstiles is based on the Miss Subways campaign. The campaign was resurrected in 2004, for one year, as “Ms. Subways”. It was part of the 100th anniversary celebrations. The monthly campaign, which included the winners’ photos and biographical blurbs on placards in subway cards, featured such winners as Mona Freeman and prominent New York City restaurateur Ellen Goodman. The winner of this contest was Caroline Sanchez-Bernat, an actress from Morningside Heights.
Nyc Subway Fare Options
- First, if you only plan to ride the subway once one way and you are not going to use the OMNY payment, you can go to any vending machine and purchase a single-ride card for $3. After swiping it through the turnstile, you can toss it, since these paper cards are for one-time use only.
- Second, if you plan to use the subway at least a couple of times and youre not going to use the OMNY payment method, then buy a Regular MetroCard . The minimum amount to put on a new card is $5.50
- Third, if you plan to use the subway several times a day and are visiting for 4 days or longer, then buy a 7-day Unlimited MetroCard. This card allows you to use the subway as many times a day as you please, without incurring any additional charges. The fixed cost of this weekly card is only $33 .
Each ride with a Regular MetroCard is $2.75
So the break-even number or rides, is 12. In other words, if you plan to ride the subway more than 12 times during your visit , then youre better off just buying the 1-week unlimited for $33 . Otherwise, just use the OMNY payment system, or get a regular, and if you run out of money, simply refill the card.
Before you decide on Regular vs. Unlimited, keep this in mind:
You can swipe a regular card up to 4 times at any given time, while an unlimited card cannot be used more than once in an 18 minute period.

When Is The Best Time To Travel To Manhattan
Weekday mornings are when hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents are commuting into the city, so if you’re driving or taking a cab during this time, expect congested roads and long delays. Figuring Out Uptown Versus Downtown
Well, youve made the rookie mistake of swiping the card before checking if youre entering on the correct side of the platform. When entering larger stations, you can swipe first then pick a direction . But with smaller stations , if you swipe on the downtown side of the platform but want to go uptown, you will not be able to switch sides. In such a scenario, you would either have to take the subway in the wrong direction until the next big station where you can cross over, or you would have to exit, cross the street to the other side and swipe again.
So lets take a step back and talk a bit more about this whole Downtown vs. Uptown concept:
Manhattan is a skinny island thats only about 2 miles wide and 13 miles long. The shape of this crowded island naturally led to a mostly linear subway system . That means that most of the subway lines in Manhattan generally run in a north-south fashion. In NY parlance, north is uptown, south is downtown. Piece of cake. Even a pigeon can remember that.
In many other cities Downtown implies a commercial core or hub, which could be up, down, left, or right. In New York City, however, Downtown literally implies down town. So if you look at a map of Manhattan, Downtown would be towards the bottom.
Given this fact, most subway stations in Manhattan will have a Downtown side and an Uptown side . The side you need depends on two factors: Where you are and where you want to go.

The next step is to follow the signs for the subway, which at the Jamaica station is on the same path as the Long Island Rail Road . How To Get To The Subway Station From Jfk Airport To Manhattan
If you are looking for the subway from JFK Airport, follow signs for the AirTrain. Note the AirTrain will seem free, until you try to leave, at which point you have to buy a Metro card and pay before exiting the turnstiles.
There are three AirTrain lines at JFK. If you are traveling to Times Square, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, or anywhere near Midtown Manhattan, the Bronx or Queens, the line you want is E train via the Jamaica line. Additionally if you want to take the LIRR, take the Jamaica line.
If you are traveling to the financial district in Manhattan or most places in Brooklyn, youll want to take the A train on the Howard Beach line It is easy to tell which line arrives on each track based on the screens above the loading zone.
Whatever train is listed on top is arriving next.
Once you are on the train, you want to get off at the either the Jamaica stop or the Howard Beach stop. There should be an announcement on the train for each stop, but just in case you want to be double sure, there is also a screen at the front and back of each car that says what stop is next. Im on the Howard Beach train below. Generally, the train line is on top and the next stop is on the bottom though.
Once you get to the station, follow the signs to the subway.
Stations With Two Levels
Some stations have two levels. The levels separate the platforms of different services and/or directions. For example:
- the local trains on one level and the express trains on another level
- trains of two different lines on two different levels
- trains of two different directions on two different levels, with a cross-platform interchange on each level
- trains of different services on two different levels that are on the same line

What Is The Cheapest Way To Get From Newark Airport To Manhattan
Trains provided by NJ Transit from Newark Airport into Manhattan are the cheapest method for getting into New York. These trains run frequently, are quick, and in many ways are even more convenient than taking public transportation from JFK or LaGuardia airports. First, the AirTrain picks you up directly from the terminal and takes you to the nearby Newark Airport train station in about 10 minutes. From there, catch an NJ Transit train to Penn Station in New York City, a journey which takes less than half an hour.
You only need one ticket to ride both trains, and you can purchase them at NJ Transit ticket machines in the terminal or through the NJ Transit app. The price to New York Penn Station is $15.25 for an adult, but the train also makes a stop at Newark Penn Station. Double-check before completing your purchase to make sure you’ve selected the correct Penn Station, or you may get fined for traveling with an invalid ticket.
Once you get to Penn Station, you can use the A, C, or E lines of the subway to continue on to your final destination or hail a cab from the station.

Using a MetroCard
Hold the card so the black magnetic strip is facing you and on the bottom of the card. Swipe your card through the reader at a medium speed, similar to how you would swipe a credit card in a credit card reader. When the turnstile screen says GO, proceed through the turnstile.
- Pay for multiple people: Swipe your pay-per-ride card up to four times at the turnstile to pay the fare for each person
- Swipe it forward: You can use your unlimited card to pay for someone elses fare at no extra cost, as long as you dont accept money for the swipe.
Note: You cannot use an unlimited MetroCard within 18 minutes of swiping it.
