IDNYC card renewals have begun – check your card’s expiration date!
IDNYC has begun accepting renewal applications for expiring cards. Check your card’s expiration date to find out when you need to renew. Your card’s expiration date is printed on the front of your card.
Cardholders are now able to renew their IDNYC cards online!To make the renewal process easy, IDNYC cardholders can renew their IDNYC cards online through IDNYC’s Online Portal.
When Does My IDNYC Card Expire?Check the expiration date printed on the front of your IDNYC card.
When Can I Renew My Card?You may renew your card up to 90 days before it expires, and up to 1 year after it expires. If your card expired more than 1 year ago, you will need to apply for a new IDNYC card at an IDNYC Enrollment Center.
Due to reduced capacities at IDNYC Enrollment Centers during COVID-19 and pursuant to 68 RCNY Sec 6-10, the IDNYC Program has expanded the renewal period for all cardholders whose cards expired in 2020. If your card expired in 2020, you may renew your card through December 31, 2022. After this date, you will not be able to renew your card and will need to submit a new application at an Enrollment Center. If your card expires in 2021, you may renew your card within one year from your card’s expiration date.
Do not delay submitting your renewal application online. You can renew your card today at nyc.gov/idnyc.
Rights And Responsibilities Of Permanent Residents
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services defines a lawful permanent resident as: “Any person not a citizen of the United States who is residing in the U.S. under legally recognized and lawfully recorded permanent residence as an immigrant.” As a permanent resident, you have particular rights and responsibilities. Understanding these can help you remain a permanent resident and even become a citizen of the U.S.
Permanent residents have the following rights:
- To live and work anywhere in the U.S., permanently
- To apply to become a U.S. citizen
- To request visas for spouses and/or children to live in the U.S.
- To receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Medicare
- To own property anywhere in the U.S.
- To apply for a driver’s license
- To come and go from the U.S.
- To join certain branches of the U.S. Armed Forces
- To own a firearm and
- To attend public school and college in the U.S.
Please note that there are certain restrictions and eligibility requirements on many of a permanent resident’s rights, so it is important to fully research these.
Permanent residents also have the following responsibilities:
- To follow local, state and federal laws
- To pay income tax
- To register with the Selective Service , if a male between 18 and 26.
- To have your green card/proof of immigration status with you at all times
- To maintain your permanent resident status and
- To inform the Department of Homeland Security of any change of address within 10 days.
Green Card Renewal Filing Fee
There are generally 2 fees associated with renewing your green card:
- Biometric Services Fee: $85
Please note there are multiple situations where an applicant is not required to pay one or both of the above fees. You should check the I-90 instructions to make sure you are paying the appropriate amount. If you make a mistake and fail to issue the necessary payment, your application will not be accepted.
Here are some general pointers:
Situations where both the I-90 filing fee and the Biometric Services Fee are Required:
- Previous green card was lost, stolen, or destroyed
- Existing green card has expired or will expire within 6 months
- Your name or other biographic data has changed since your last green card was issued
- You have turned 14 years old and your existing green card will expire before your 16th birthday
- You are a permanent resident taking up commuter status
- You are a commuter who is taking up actual residence in the United States
Situations Where the Biometric Services Fee is Required but the I-90 Filing Fee is Not Required:
- You have turned 14 years old and your existing green card will expire after your 16th birthday
Situations Where Neither the Biometric Services Fee or the I-90 Filing Fee are Required:
- Your previous green card was issued but never received
- Existing green card has incorrect data because of Department of Homeland Security Error

How To Check The Green Card Renewal Time

Traveling outside the United States without a valid green card can be risky.

Renew Or Replace My Green Card
Having a Green Card allows you to live and work permanently in the United States. The steps you must take to apply for a Green Card will vary depending on your individual situation.
You must replace your Green Card if:
- Your Green Card is either expired or will expire within the next six months
- Your previous card was lost, stolen, mutilated, or destroyed
- You received your card before you were 14 and you have reached your 14th birthday
- You have been a commuter and are now taking up actual residence in the United States
- You have been a permanent resident residing in the United States and are now taking up commuter status
- Your status has been automatically converted to permanent resident status

What Evidence Do I Need To Renew Or Replace My Green Card
If you are renewing your green card and it is still valid, you will most likely only need to provide a copy of your valid card. If you are seeking a replacement or your green card has already expired, there are several different documents that may be required.
- Replacement: provide a copy of a valid picture ID, such as a picture of your green card, passport, drivers license, or any other government-issued identification.
- Name change: provide evidence of the name change, such as your marriage or divorce license, or legal documents from court proving you have changed your name
- Corrections: your original, incorrect green card as well as your marriage, divorce, or birth certificate.

What You Need To Renew
In addition to meeting the requirements to renew any type of driver license, to renew your CDL you will need to:
1) Meet the Federal Medical certification requirements
You will need to indicate compliance when you answer the required questions on the MV-2CDL which is included with your renewal notice. See information about the Federal Medical Certification Requirements.
2) Have proof of your legal presence in the United States on DMV records
The DMV Document Guide lists all acceptable legal presence and New York State residence proof documents.
If you are not changing your address: Attach a photocopy of your license document to satisfy the New York State residency requirement.
If you must renew in-person at a DMV office: You must present original copies of your residence proof and legal presence documentation.
If you are a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident: You will only need to provide this proof on the first application on or after June 18, 2015. We will retain the proof on your driving record. If you have not provided these documents, you may submit photocopies with your mail-in renewal.
If you are a temporary visitor: You will need to provide proof of legal presence in the U.S. with every application. Your new document will have the legend NON-DOMICILED and also TEMPORARY VISITOR and the expiration date of your legal status in the United States printed on it. If you are renewing by mail, you can submit photocopies of your legal presence proof documents.
What Happens If I Dont Renew My Green Card
If your green card expires, you do not lose your permanent resident status.
Your green card is only a source of identification.
You show your green card to prove you are:
- a lawful permanent resident
Your green card has no effect on your status as a lawful permanent resident.

What Is The Process To Renew A Green Card
The first step in renewing your green card is completing Form I-90, the Application to Replace a Permanent Residence Card. You can do this electronically or through the mail. If you have been arrested for or convicted of any crimes prior to renewing the green card, consult with a lawyer experienced in immigration matters.
