How To Get Into The New York City Marathon

Chances Of Gettingin Via Lottery

How to Prepare for the New York Marathon Route

To get into the marathon via the lottery requires some luck. As I have stated before, there was about a 17%-18% chance to get a spot through the lottery a couple of years ago. That chance has shrunk considerably with only 10,500 runners accepted through non-guaranteed entry in the 2019 NYC Marathon. That was out of close to 117,000 total lottery entrants.

This low success rate is because the race is so popular and iconic. After all, it is the largest marathon in the world, and the numbers keep growing.

With that being said, theres nothing to lose if you do decide to try your luck with the lottery. You just never know! But if not, theres a ton of great charities you can run and raise money for to gain guaranteed entry.

Williamsburg Taketh And Then Giveth

Williamsburg delivers what may be the least and most fun stretches of the marathon. It starts with a grind across the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway that ends up in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood where the marathon is something of an afterthought. The result is a strange kind of silence and little support among the locals that can make Mile 11 feel like two or three.

But eventually that quiet gives way to the Williamsburg of hipsters and art galleries and cafes and bars that has blossomed during the past two decades and made a party of this last part of the first half of the race. There is an over-staffed water station near McCarren Park and glimpses of the Queensboro Bridge that will eventually lead into Manhattan.

Other Ways To Track New York City Marathon Runners

There’s one drawback of the official NYC Marathon app with thousands of people using it on race day, it can sometimes be a little glitchy. There are other ways out there to track your runner, both by their running watch or fitness tracker and with certain running apps.

Firstly, if your runner is wearing a Garmin running watch, and carrying their smartphone, they can turn on Live Track via their Garmin Connect app on their phone. This allows runners to share their live location with friends and family via email, Facebook, or Twitter. The downside here is that it also relies on a phone GPS signal, so might be temperamental on race day and won’t be an option for runners leaving their phone in their kit bag. The Garmin Forerunner 245 LTE also has live tracking, and can relay a runner’s position without needing a phone.

If your runner has an Apple Watch SE or an Apple Watch Series 3 or later, they will be able to share their live location with you before setting off. To do this, they’ll need to add you in the Find People app on the Apple Watch and tap share my location. Once they’ve chosen you as a friend, you’ll be able to see their location for one hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely . This too will require them to carry a smartphone with them, unless they have a cellular version of Apple’s Watch.

Getting Into The New York City Marathon

How to get a GUARANTEED ENTRY to the NYC MARATHON

It can be pretty tough to get into the New York City Marathon, which is a little odd, it being at largest marathon in the world at over 50,000 entrants. This year, there were 134,000 people who applied through various channels to run, so actually getting a bib can still be a long shot for some.

Barring a few less-travelled routes to acquiring a bib number, most of the runners in Sundays race went through one of three methods qualification based on time, picked through the lottery or running for charity, with the likelihood following that order.

New York City has some of the toughest qualifying standards of large marathon in the world. Men under 40 need to run under 2:45. For women, 3:10. Equally strenuous standards are set for each age category above that. There are similar standards set to qualify with a half-marathon time. Still, the race tends to attract some fast runners. By a landslide, the most common way to race the five boroughs is to dip under your respective standard. About three-quarters of the field in 2014 will have gotten in through guaranteed entry. There are other ways to get a guaranteed entry, but running fast is the most common way.

Still, even hitting standard for guaranteed entry doesnt actually necessarily qualify you for guaranteed entry. Qualifying at a NYRR event will get you in for sure, but hitting standard elsewhere means youre entered into a small, separate lottery from everyone else, from which you can be selected to run.

Simple, right?

If you are training to qualify for the NYC Marathon by time, you must have run a half or full marathon at least as fast as the following times in the previous calendar year . The total number of time-qualifier spots is limited, and the time is the net time, not the gun time.

Strangers In A Strange Race

In 1970, Isenberg was a 19-year-old sophomore at Princeton. He had already run four marathons including Boston twice when the universitys new cross-country coach, Larry Ellis, told him about a new race in New York City.

All Isenberg knew about the city, he said, was “that the ‘damn Yankees’ played up there,” and that he wouldn’t have to deal with Jock Semple, the race official who tore up Isenberg’s original birth certificate and tried to disqualify him after his 26.2-mile debut at the 1969 Boston Marathon.

Jim Isenberg was 19 and a sophomore at Princeton when he ran in the first New York City marathon in 1970 wearing the number 64

To please his coach, Isenberg took a $1.80 bus ride to Port Authority, found his way to the start, and lined up wearing bib 64.

Elsewhere in the field stood 16-year-old Trachtenberg. He hadn’t consulted anyone. He didn’t know how to train. He was fast, but his longest competitive effort was two-and-a-half miles, the standard high school cross-country distance. He had never run a road race, and had spent the summer working for tips at a ritzy summer camp, dashing back and forth to the highway to stay in shape. But he was up for a challenge on the day before he started 12th grade.

Heat decimated the field, attrition set in, and by the third loop, Isenberg said he was ready to jump in a pond and drink half of it. He finished in 3 hours, 18 minutes, 19 seconds.

“My game plan worked perfectly,” he said.

Perhaps the most obvious way to enter the New York City Marathon is to have a qualifying time. What does this mean? You can submit a qualifying time from another marathon that shows you are a certain level of runner. If you have a time that is under the qualifying time you are guaranteed entry into the NYC Marathon. Like most marathons the qualifying times vary for age and gender and can be seen below.

How to Get Into the 2020 New York City Marathon

The calm of Fourth Avenue ultimately gives way to the bedlam of Downtown Brooklyn and then Lafayette Avenue. For two miles its the joy of the brownstone-lined streets in the heart of the borough, where lots of kids are always offering orange slices and other refreshments. Careful, though: Lafayette Avenue is uphill. Dont let all the music coming from the windows of the house parties force a sprint. Soak it in during these two miles instead, especially as the party continues after the left turn into Bedford-Stuyvesant, and keep the memory of those cheers fresh for what comes soon.
