Over the past 11 years, Ive gone from cofounding a magazine with a few fellow undergraduates to working as a strategist at the intersection of storytelling and business development. After college, I worked in business development at Viacom then, after a grad school stint, I spent the next six years in strategy at a boutique creative agency. In 2004, the newspaper’s public editor Daniel Okrent said in an opinion piece that The New York Times did have a liberal bias in news coverage of certain social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. ‘this Isn’t A Ridiculous Millennial Crybaby Thing’

Still, one ex-Times employee who was set recently to move into a new role told Insider they sought approval for an outside project that had been paying them more than their Times salary. It was denied, this person said.

The employee, whose identity is known to Insider but requested anonymity to speak openly about their former employer, left the Times for a job at a news organization that allowed for the outside project.

“This isn’t a ridiculous millennial crybaby thing. This is being reasonable and responsible about finances,” the former Times staffer said. “You take a generation that grew up during the financial crisis and suffers serious financial shocks and tell them, ‘No, don’t have multiple income streams?’ No, of course not.”

The issue of outside work has bubbled up in the press. The Daily Beast reported last year that infighting at the Times derailed a film project based on a reporters’ book on the GameStop stock frenzy. Other newsrooms have faced pressure too, like The Wall Street Journal, where reporters griped about the paper’s push to retain rights to their book deals, the Daily Beast reported.

Now, as The New York Times Guild negotiates a new union contract with management, the topic of outside work and the extent to which Times staffers can solicit and negotiate offers to option their work is being hashed out at the bargaining table.

Actually, I found that working at a grocery store gave me the chance to interact socially with all kinds of characters. Ive really leaned on those skills in my current internship at XYZ News.

In February, I interviewed Laszlo Bock, who is in charge of all hiring at Google about 100 new hires a week to try to understand what an employer like Google was looking for and why it was increasingly ready to hire people with no college degrees. Bocks remarks generated a lot of reader response, particularly his point that prospective bosses today care less about what you know or where you learned it the Google machine knows everything now than what value you can create with what you know. With graduations approaching, I went back to Google to ask Bock to share his best advice for job-seekers anywhere, not just at Google. Here is a condensed version of our conversations:
