Richmond Hill Catholic High School Rankings: Richmond Hills Best Catholic High Schools 2020

The best Catholic high schools in Richmond Hill can be challenging to gauge. The way many parents do it is by planning to attend high schools that have very-good-to-excellent pass-rates on the EQAO test scores the Ontario government publishes every year for all publicly-funded schools in the province. Others simply rely on the SUSI Rankings to at least get a decent sense of what the best Catholic high schools in Richmond Hill might be.

However, as Real Estate professionals who have a specialty in schools, we strongly feel that there is a problem with making a determination about the best Catholic high schools in Richmond Hill based solely on EQAO pass-rates. These test scores only emanate from Grade 9 and Grade 10 students some who have attended the high school for only half a year! We wonder: How can you make a correct overall assessment of a high school based on these results alone?? The answer is: You cannot, and you really should not.

What could be just as a determining of a factor are the programs or clubs offered by each secondary school. Programs & clubs have be seen to work very well in a secondary school to keep teenagers both focused and out of trouble, and we strongly recommend that these factors be considered.

Freshmen at this leafy 17-acre campus in Arrochar choose a STEM track or a humanities track for four years of focused electives, starting with either a robotics course or a communication/theater class that develops speech and writing skills. A new performing arts studio supports dance and drama. Student volunteers the Hills Angels take Catholic social teaching beyond the classroom: During the COVID-19 pandemic, one group supplied 600 sandwiches a week to local homeless outreach centers. Top soccer and volleyball teams, two of Hills 14 sports, won archdiocesan championships this year.

About Catholic High School

The 43 Catholic secondary schools throughout the archdiocese offer rigorous, high-quality academics in an environment formed by the faith and values of the Catholic Church.

In the Archdiocese of New York, 99 percent of our high school seniors graduate and 99 percent of graduates are accepted to post-secondary education. We are enormously proud of those statistics and commit ourselves each year to maintaining that standard of excellence. Our high schools focus on ensuring the success of every child that walks through its hallways.

Fifteen are coeducational, 17 are all girls schools, and 13 are all boys schools. Their common thread is academic excellence developed in a Christ-centered environment that builds character while teaching to each students individualized learning style.

Our high schools educate a diverse student body, each student unique and special in their own way. In the 2018-19 school year, 45 percent of students were Caucasian, 30 percent were Hispanic, 15 percent were African American, and five percent were Asian. Our schools are steeped in Catholic tradition but always welcoming to children of other faiths. Fully 22 percent of our high school students were non-Catholic in 2018-19 school year.

Nearly 100 underclassmen from five Catholic high schools on Staten Island designed and constructed bridge models and programmed robots as part of an engineering conference held at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island in April.

The third annual high school student leadership conference an interactive dialogue titled The Media Landscape: A Catholic Lens fostered a thoughtful discussion on reconciling the current media culture of incivility and fake news with our calling as Catholics to seek truth and compassion. Student representatives from 32 Catholic high schools heard from a panel which included: Director of the Pauline Center for Media Studies in Los Angeles, Sr. Nancy Usselmann, FSP Auxiliary Bishop of New York and former principal of Monsignor Farrell High School, Msgr. Edmund J. Whalen Cardinal Spellman High School student, Georgia-Renee Boahmah and Regis High School student, Obinna Nwako. Rob Astorino, former Westchester County executive, CNN commentator and Cardinal Timothy Dolans delegate to the Mother Cabrini Foundation, served as the moderator.

The discussion included opportunities for questions and comments from the audience, and students openly discussed topics such as the Covington Catholic controversy, how minorities are portrayed in the media, and the line between free-speech and hate-speech. Our annual A Catholic Lens conference inspires our students to speak their minds, understanding that they are each individual who are a part of something greater, and helping each other to navigate this worldthrough a Catholic Lens.

Each of New York Citys 46 Catholic high schools operates independently. Two separate dioceses nominally oversee them: the Archdiocese of New York for schools in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, and the Diocese of Brooklyn for Brooklyn and Queens.

The schools set their own admissions standards and procedures, and 40 percent of them are now co-ed. Almost all welcome students of every faith, although four years of religion and theology classes are required for everyone. Most offer academic and need-based scholarships.

Prospective freshmen apply to 40 of the schools via the standardized Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools, or TACHS, which has already been administered for the fall of 2022. But many do admit transfer students check with each for its policies.
