Fare Evasion Is More Common Than You Might Think But Most People Are One

While fare evasion has been studied by data scientists and engineers, few have looked into the psychological aspects that drive this action a form of consumer misbehavior, according to researchers from the Public Transport Research Group in Australia.

The groups findings, explained to me by Graham Currie, a professor of public transportation at Monash University, examine how common fare evasion is among the general public and the intentions of re-offending evaders, who are a small but significant population in transit systems worldwide.

Curries research evaluated rider behavior in Melbourne, but his team also conducted follow-up research in ten cities around the world, including New York, to determine the publics perception of transit systems with high fare evasion rates.

Currie told me that in New York City, about 40 percent of transit riders evade a fare once a year, intentional or not. This is a big share of the population, he said. This one-time fare evasion could be due to a variety of circumstances: The ticketing booth wasnt working, a rider left their Metrocard at home, or the emergency exit door was left open, which provides for a quick entry.

But according to the law, even if you do it once, youre committing a crime, Currie continued. So riders immediate reaction to the authorities calling them criminals is to feel that the system is incompetent.

How Long Does It Take To Drive

Driving the route yourself is always an option if you’re not too intimidated by the traffic in New York City . Traffic jams, aggressive drivers, and tolls put many people off from driving in the city, but if you’re one who’s up for a challenge, the 95-mile commute takes between an hour, 40 minutes and two hours, 30 minutes with traffic.

The most direct route will take you through New Jersey on I-95 or via the New Jersey Turnpike. The drive is rather uneventful and parking in either city can be a nightmare, so renting a car is not most people’s first choice. However, if you’re coming from the airport where rental cars are cheapest and you’re traveling in a group, road tripping can be economical and fun.

The Most Expensive Mile Of Subway Track On Earth

How to take the subway in New York City, tips from local New Yorkers

How excessive staffing, little competition, generous contracts and archaic rules dramatically inflate capital costs for transit in New York.

An accountant discovered the discrepancy while reviewing the budget for new train platforms under Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.

The budget showed that 900 workers were being paid to dig caverns for the platforms as part of a 3.5-mile tunnel connecting the historic station to the Long Island Rail Road. But the accountant could only identify about 700 jobs that needed to be done, according to three project supervisors. Officials could not find any reason for the other 200 people to be there.

Nobody knew what those people were doing, if they were doing anything, said Michael Horodniceanu, who was then the head of construction at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs transit in New York. The workers were laid off, Mr. Horodniceanu said, but no one figured out how long they had been employed. All we knew is they were each being paid about $1,000 every day.

The Times found that a host of factors have contributed to the transit authoritys exorbitant capital costs.

The M.T.A., for its part, did not dispute the findings.

What Is The Cheapest Way To Get From Newark Airport To Manhattan

Trains provided by NJ Transit from Newark Airport into Manhattan are the cheapest method for getting into New York. These trains run frequently, are quick, and in many ways are even more convenient than taking public transportation from JFK or LaGuardia airports. First, the AirTrain picks you up directly from the terminal and takes you to the nearby Newark Airport train station in about 10 minutes. My Favourite Hotel Search Site: Wwwbookingcom

www.booking.comis my favourite hotel booking site and I generally prefer booking my hotels all in one place here. You can usually book with free cancellation – this allows you to confirm your accommodation at no risk before train booking opens. It also means you can hold accommodation while you finalise your itinerary, and alter your plans as they evolve – a feature I use all the time when putting a trip together. I never book hotels non-refundably. I have also come to trust their review scores – you won’t be disappointed with anything over 8.0.

Tip: It can pay to compare prices across multiple hotel sites: HotelsCombined.com is a price comparison site which compares hotel prices on Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, Accor, Agoda and many others. Though if there’s not much in it, I prefer keeping all my bookings together in one place atwww.booking.com.

A Curve Cardsaves On Foreign Transaction Fees

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate, then charge you a currency conversion fee. A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month at time of writing. The balance goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.

How it works: 1.. 2. Enter your details & they’ll send you a Curve MasterCard – they send to most European addresses including the UK. 3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app. 4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, just like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance onto whichever of your debit or credit cards you choose. You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself – I get some commission if you sign up to Curve, but I’m recommending it here because it’s great. – they’ll give you £5 cashback through that link, too.

What Is The Fastest Way To Get From Newark Airport To Manhattan

The fastest method can vary depending on what part of the city you’re going to and what time of day you’re commuting, but driving or a taxi will generally be the fastest method. Renting a car isn’t ideal for a trip to New York City, since you won’t use a car in the city and you’ll end up paying to just leave it in a parking garage. From the airport, you can hail a New Jersey cab, call an Uber or Lyft, or hire a private car service to pick you up. The benefit is that you can sit back and relax in the car while a driver takes you directly to the front door of your hotel or accommodations. However, rush hour traffic can seriously delay your arrival.

Using a taxi service is by far the most expensive option as well. Taxis are metered and a ride to downtown Manhattan will cost you at least $50, with journeys getting more expensive as you travel more uptown. Passengers are also responsible for paying bridge tolls, a rush-hour surcharge, and a credit card fee, all of which can drastically bump up the price. Don’t forget to add on an additional 10 percent to 20 percent of the fare for the customary tip.
