Salaries for lawyers starting out at firms have remained flat, with an annual pay of $160,000 continuing to be the top of the market, according to a new survey from the National Association for Law Placement.

Some 39 percent of the largest firms those with 700 lawyers or more reported paying that amount in the associations 2015 law associates salary survey. This was up from last year, when only 27 percent of the big firms reported paying their new legal hires at the uppermost level.

But the percentage was still below 2009, when nearly two-thirds of the first-year salaries were at the top point of $160,000.

The reason is not that individual firms are paying less, said James G. Leipold, executive director of National Association for Law Placement, but as more law firms have grown through acquisition and merger, the largest law firms are not as similar to one another as they used to be.

Mr. Leipold added that there were many firms with more than 700 lawyers that have many smaller regional offices, many of which dont pay the benchmark first-year salary of $160,000. As a result, he added, a larger percentage of large law firm starting salaries fall below that mark.

When Might An Individual Or Business Need Help From A Corporate Lawyer

Trump Says He Pleaded The Fifth During Deposition For New York Attorney General’s Civil Probe

A corporate lawyer advises firms on how to comply with rules and laws, but that’s only the beginning. In truth, any individual starting a business venture could benefit from a corporate lawyer. Why? Because a corporate lawyer can help you structure and plan your business for success, even if you end up going with a business structure other than a corporation.

It’s always a good idea to have a lawyer on board to craft your business’ managing documents, review contracts, and help you make other strategy decisions.

Of course, it’s not always possible for smaller businesses to have a corporate lawyer on retainer, but one should be consulted when forming a business, when closing a business, and when problems arise, at the very least.

Consider meeting with a corporate lawyer in your area if you are starting a business venture or need advice on anything else related to business transactions or planning.

What Type Of Work Do Corporate Lawyers Do

Will New York

Contrary to popular belief, most corporate lawyers rarely step foot in courtrooms. Instead, most of the work they do is considered “transactional” in nature. That means they spend most of their time helping a corporation to avoid litigation.

More specifically, corporate lawyers may spend their time on:

  • Contracts: Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating legally-binding agreements on behalf of the corporation, which could involve everything from lease agreements to multi-billion dollar acquisitions
  • Mergers and acquisitions : Conducting due diligence, negotiating, drafting, and generally overseeing “deals” that involve a corporation “merging” with another company or “acquiring” another company
  • Corporate governance: Helping clients create the framework for how a firm is directed and controlled, such as by drafting articles of incorporation, creating bylaws, advising corporate directors and officers on their rights and responsibilities, and other policies used to manage the company
  • Venture capital: Helping startup or existing corporations find capital to build or expand the business, which can involve either private or public financing
  • Securities: Advising clients on securities law compliance, which involves the complex regulations aimed at preventing fraud, insider training, and market manipulation, as well as promoting transparency, within publicly-traded companies

A Sometimes Stressful Work Environment

Because of the practice of billing clients for time spent on cases, attorneys working for large corporations can anticipate working substantially above the standard 40-hour norm.

Oftentimes, lawyers have demanding schedules and hefty workloads, both of which may lead to increased levels of stress.

Is it worthwhile to become a lawyer? That is something that you can only decide.

Personal Injury Lawyer Salary

Personal injury attorneys work with clients who allege physical or psychological harm as a result of the negligence or wrongdoing of another party. In case of an accident or injury, personal injury lawyers represent their clients to obtain justice and compensation for any losses or suffering. The vast majority of these cases fall under the area of tort law.

To help clients receive compensation for any financial losses, pain and suffering theyve experienced due to negligence, personal injury lawyers interview clients, evaluate their case, identify and research specific issues in the plaintiffs case. If a plaintiff makes a claim that involves an injury to the body or mind, this falls into the category of personal injury law. Car accidents, work injuries, and slip and falls constitute some of the most common cases in this field.

The average annual pay for a personal injury lawyer is approximately $50,000. Many attorneys in this field do not have a set annual income as they work for contingency fees. This means that they earn a percentage of any compensation settlement the plaintiff receives. As in most cases, lawyers working for non-profit organizations or the government tend to earn the least, while their colleagues in big law firms are the top earners.
