A few New York drive-in movie theaters opened on Friday, including the Warwick Drive-In, which reduced its capacity by half and reportedly drew desperate moviegoers from out of town, per the Times Herald-Record:

De Blasio Says Beach Fences Are Ready

While New York state beaches will open for Memorial Day weekend, NYC beaches will remain closed and Mayor de Blasio has threatened to fence them off if people dont abide by the rules. The fencing, which would cut off entry points to the beaches, will be put in position starting today, he said. I dont want to implement it unless we need to, de Blasio said, but we have to have it ready. Walking on the beach is allowed, the mayor said, but no swimming, no lifeguards, no parties, no barbecues, no sports.

Wealthy La County Communities Seeing Fastest Rise In Coronavirus Cases

As L.A. Countys coronavirus cases continue to climb, infections are rising fastest among wealthier residents, a likely echo of previous waves in which a greater rate of higher-income people became infected with the virus first.

And New York Citys rate of new hospitalizations is triple that of L.A. Countys, tallying 10.2 new coronavirus-positive hospital admissions weekly for every 100,000 residents, compared with L.A. Countys rate of 3.1 new hospital admissions for every 100,000 residents. A rate of 10 or higher is reason for a greater degree of worry for increasing strain on the hospital system.

Several potential reasons might explain why New York City is experiencing a worse increase in cases and hospitalizations than L.A.

New York City has a lower booster rate among seniors ages 65 and older compared with L.A. County. About 58% of seniors have received a booster shot in New York City, compared to 67% of seniors in L.A. County.

And while mask use has been reduced nationwide as the Omicron surge faded, people who have visited both metropolises recently have observed that people have been more likely to wear masks in L.A. County than New York City, including when its not required.

Small Nonessential Gatherings Are Back

Small gatherings of up to ten socially distanced people are once again allowed in New York, Governor Cuomo announced on Friday night. The surprise move came after the New York Civil Liberties Union sued the state, arguing that Cuomos earlier order, which allowed groups of up to ten people to attend religious services and celebrations to mark Memorial Day, infringed on New Yorkers First Amendment rights by limiting who could gather. In response, Cuomo signed a new order allowing anyone to gather in groups of that size for any reason statewide.

Coronavirus cases are spreading at an alarming rate across the United States, particularly in the Northeast and the Midwest, as the countrys death toll nears the one million mark.

An average of more than 90,000 new cases are now being identified each day in the United States, a 60 percent increase from two weeks ago. And in much of the Northeast and Midwest, daily new-case reports have already surpassed the peak of last summers Delta surge.

The new surge is probably worse than what is being recorded because many coronavirus infections are not included in the official tally. Many positive results from at-home virus tests go unrecorded.

Hospitalizations are increasing across the country, though more slowly than new cases. The number of patients with coronavirus in American hospitals surpassed 21,000 over the past week well below the peak levels seen in prior surges, but still a 23 percent rise from two weeks ago.

The rise shouldnt surprise people, given the large number of unvaccinated Americans, said Ajay Sethi, an associate professor of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In Wisconsin, for example, a rise in hospitalizations is inevitable as long as we have so many people who are vulnerable, he said.

New case reports in the state have increased by 81 percent from the average two weeks ago. Deaths related to the virus have increased to an average of five a day.

Other key metrics also indicate the latest wave may be subsiding.

The percent positivity rate — the percentage of tests that come back positive — is currently at 8.64%, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. This is a drop from the average of 10.95% over the last 28 days.

Additionally, the seven-day average of hospitalizations has dropped 15.4% from 84 to 71.

“In all likelihood, we’re on the other side of this particular surge, but at the same time it’s not dropping dramatically because of…behavior,” said Dr. John Brownstein, an epidemiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and an ABC News contributor. “We essentially have two opposing forces, one where we have a lot of immunity in the population from vaccination and infection.”

He continued, “On the other hand, people are starting to enjoy congregating and going to indoor concerts, festivals, sporting events. These will create opportunities for the virus to spread.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the unvaccinated population has made up the largest share of COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the city.

Propublica Report Details Coronavirus

The intrastate cold war between Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio hampered New Yorks response to the pandemic and likely exacerbated the death toll from the coronavirus in the city and state, according to a ProPublica investigation published on Saturday. The report contrasts how leaders in New York and California have handled the crisis and identifies several critical ways Cuomo and de Blasio mismanaged the response in New York.

One of those major problems was the often petty rivalry between the two leaders, which continued despite the pandemic and led to confusion and a lack of coordination and information sharing. While New Yorks formal pandemic response plan underscores the need for seamless communication between state and local officials, the state Health Department broke off routine sharing of information and strategy with its city counterpart in February, just as the size of the menace was becoming clearer, according to both a city official and a city employee, ProPublica explains.

Per the report, both Cuomo and de Blasio dragged their feet, did not follow the right expert guidance, delivered both incorrect and mixed messages in response to the growing threat, and resisted measures that would have likely saved lives.

Tensions Over City Residents Relocating To Rural Areas

Some residents of New York City and its inner suburbs who own, or can afford to rent, property in rural areas or on eastern have aroused local resentment for doing so during the pandemic. , executive of , east of , asked Cuomo to issue an order banning all non-essential travel upstate from the city, after city residents booked all available local lodging. Seven of 51 cases the county had as of April 2 were city residents, and the county feared it did not have sufficient healthcare infrastructure to handle a large outbreak McLaughlin issued an order requiring any recent arrivals from the city to quarantine themselves for 14 days, during which law enforcement will check on them regularly.

Similarly, , in the just south of Albany, posted on its website a letter asking people to refrain from traveling there, especially from New York City or Westchester. “There is no hospital in Greene County,” wrote the chairman of the county legislature. “This limits our ability to serve a large number of people requiring higher levels of care for COVID-19 patients and other illnesses.” The legislatures of neighboring and counties made similar requests.

Since reporting can vary significantly from day to day irrespectively of any actual variation of cases it is helpful to look at a longer time span that is less affected by the daily variation in reporting. This provides a clearer picture of where the pandemic is accelerating, staying the same, or reducing.

Asked at his Friday-morning press conference to address the concerns of New Yorkers who dont feel safe on the subway, Mayor de Blasio essentially shrugged. Theres not always a chance to help people all the time in terms of their transportation needs, he said. He emphasized the need to make subways and buses as clean as possible, with maximum service levels, social distancing, and limits on ridership to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Still, he said, I really want to push back on the notion that we can solve everything all the time. As for what New Yorkers who rely on the MTA should do, de Blasio said, People are going to have to improvise, and I believe they will.

New York Introduces Pilot Program Allowing Visitors To Return To Some Hospitals

The Nyse Trading Floor Is Open Once Again

Governor Cuomo rang the bell to open the trading floor on the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday, the first time in over two months the floor has been open. The typically chaotic atmosphere was more subdued Tuesday under a new set of rules meant to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Anyone entering the building must undergo a temperature check, wear a mask, maintain six feet of distance, and not ride public transit. The trading floor, which had been closed on March 23, opened at 25 percent capacity Tuesday.
