Hotels / Restaurants Near Penn Station

My husband and I plan to take Amtrak from Pittsburgh to Penn Station for a long weekend in May, arriving Sat. We’re considering The New Yorker or the Affinia Manhattan–any recommendations? Also, how about a restaurant in that area for our anniversary dinner that weekend–romantic but not overly expensive.

Just because you’re taking Amtrak doesn’t mean you have to stay near the terminal. Honestly, it’s one of the busiest, least attractive parts of the city. Yes, the 2 hotels you mention are very close but the area is known by locals to be lacking in decent restaurants apart from sports bars . Have a look at the Affinia Dumont, owned by the same co. as the Aff. Manhattan and a bit further east from the station. They have some rooms with great views of the Empire State or the Chrysler building. In fact, you can really stay anywhere.

What kind of food would you like for your anniversary? Btw, that too doesn’t have to be near the hotel or the station. ) We have a very good transit system not to mention taxis. )

Whatever you do, avoid the Radisson Martinique. My brother and his family stayed there for New Years Eve weekend. The mini bar didnt work, the movies didnt work, the toilet ran non-stop unless you stuck your hand in the tank and pulled up the flap. All requests for it to be fixed were ignored.

It was surprisingly quiet for being on 6th Ave.

No security to speak of, despite the location and holiday.

Later History And Threats Of Demolition

In 1997, Vornado Realty Trust acquired the hotel in a joint venture with Ong Beng Seng, a Singaporean hotel developer and financier, for $159 million. On September 25, 1997, Vornado and Ong’s company announced a further joint venture with Planet Hollywood, to renovate the property and convert it into the first Official All Star Hotel. The planned conversion did not happen. Instead, Vornado bought out Seng’s 40% stake in the hotel in 1998, for $70 million, and then bought out Planet Hollywood’s 20% stake in 1999, for $42 million.

In the hotel’s final years, the mezzanine levels above the lobby were operated as a separate business, the Penn Plaza Pavilion, a series of raw spaces used as function facilities. They were the site of numerous trade shows and conventions, including the annual Big Apple Comic Con.

In 2007, Vornado announced that the hotel would be demolished to make way for 15 Penn Plaza, a new office building that would have Merrill Lynch as its anchor tenant. Vornado intended to build a 2,500,000-square-foot building by 2011.

Preservation efforts proved difficult. Emmanuel Goldstein of 2600 noted that while people overseas expressed concern over the fate of the hotel:

In June 2019, Vornado unsuccessfully tried to lure to rent space in the proposed office building, with a new design done by Rafael Viñoly.

    Hotel Near Penn Station

Looking now for a hotel near Penn Station as I’ve heard my best bet coming from JFK is to ride the train there and find a hotel near the station.

Looking at Wolcott, pretty good prices . We’re going on June 11th and 12th and they are quoting me at $180 pn. Any tips about that hotel?

Or any suggestions on other hotels within walking distance from Penn Station ? We’ll be carrying luggage so don’t want to go too far!

    Thanks!

I have people staying at The Wolcott this coming weekend, it is a decent hotel for the price, gets ok reviews.

The Affiinia Manhattan is across the street, may be a bit more pricey.

Try La Quinta or Red Roof Inn or Avalon.

The Pennsylvania Hotel is also across the street, but reports vary greatly. People I know have stayed there and said it was ok, others hate it, so it is up to you. Check all reviews.

    Avoid The New Yorker.

There’s a new hotel nearby – The Wingate Inn, it looks great. I’m staying there next week so I’ll report back on what it’s like.

First, it’s REALLY early to be booking for June of 2007 so I wouldn’t book anything that requires prepayment. You could find some much better deals closer to the date.

Second, the area around Penn Station is not so attractive. Yes, it’s near the ESB and Macy’s, but there are nicer places to be imo. Seems crazy to me to stay there just b/c you want to ride the train. Taking the bus to Grand Central or Port Authority is about the same price $15/person).

Walk To Our Hotel Near Penn Station In Nyc

In the beginning of the twentieth century, the Old Penn Station was a Beaux Arts architectural marvel. Inspired by Roman baths and the Gare D’Orsay in Paris, it was a vision of pink marble, steel beams, Doric columns, and light shining into an impressive glass atrium. But by the middle of the century, the station had fallen into disrepair and was demolished completely in the 1960s.

The current Penn Station exists entirely underground, below Madison Square Garden. And while it’s not the looker it once was, it is a marvel of modern transportation: every ninety seconds, up to 1,000 people stream into the station from points near and far, including Boston, Philly and DC. At just two blocks away, Kimpton Hotel Eventi is one of the closest four-star hotels near Penn Station. The transit hub puts the whole city within your reach during your stay with us. And that’s pretty moving.
