$40 Standing Room Only Tickets

A sports guys opinion of Hamilton on Broadway: Its ...

Hamilton, like several other Broadway shows, offers standing-room-only tickets.

This is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of a seat, you are buying a numbered spot to stand just behind the last row in the orchestra section.

These tickets are only offered for the same-day performance and are not guaranteed to be available. You will need to stand in line at the Richard Rodgers Theater box office to get these $40 tickets.

The box office opens at 10 am, but its wise to get there early for this regularly sold-out show.

The downside is that you will have a spot – not a seat. This is not a good option for you if you dont want to stand for a long period of time.

Another con is that waiting in line for an SRO ticket does not guarantee you will get a ticket and you will have just spent most of your day sitting in a street in the Theater District for nothing.

Hit Broadway Show That Has Grossed Over Half A Billion Dollars May Still Be Underpriced Despite Hefty Costs For A Seat

Ticket prices for Hamilton are considerably higher on the resale market, leading experts to say the show could be leaving millions of dollars on the table annually.

With a current top ticket price of $849, Hamilton is the costliest show to see on Broadwayby a wide margin. But to hear some economic experts tell it, even that high-priced seat may be a steal. In effect, Hamilton is underpricing itself, they say.

This curious state of affairs coincides with a boom on Broadway, whose shows overall grossed a record $1.8 billion in the season that recently concluded. And several new productions, from the musicals Hadestown and Aint Too Proud to the drama To Kill a Mockingbird, are helping lead the way at the box office. They are also vying for honors at this years Tony Awards ceremony on Sunday.

But none of these shows can come close to Hamilton in terms of financial clout. Week after week, Lin-Manuel Mirandas musical about the life of Alexander Hamilton outsells all other Broadway productions, typically grossing between $3 million and $4 millionor at least three times what is typically considered a respectable financial benchmark on the Great White Way.

And it does so by charging higher ticket prices than other shows. The average paid admission to Hamilton has run from about $270 to $310 during non-holiday weeks, according to the Broadway League, an industry trade group. That figure includes premium seats that indeed cost as much as $849.

How to Get Tickets for Hamilton Without Paying Scalper Prices

Hamilton on Broadway has the following standard ticket pricing:

Premium Orchestra Seats: $400 – $949 Regular Orchestra Seats: $235Front Mezzanine Seats: $235Rear Mezzanine Seats: $135 – $199

Ticket buyers often face difficulty with buying Hamilton tickets because nearly all the tickets for this show are purchased by ticket brokers, who then resell the tickets for a much higher price. For Lin Manuel-Miranda’s last appearance in the lead role at this show , the best seats in the house had a face value of $949 and were then resold by a ticket broker for $20,000 each, five hours before curtain time.

Now that Manuel-Miranda is long gone from the show, normal ticket broker markups for Hamilton tickets have resumed and tickets are generally about double of the original face value of the ticket. Buyers can normally expect to pay a ticket broker around $450 for an orchestra ticket that cost them just $235.

Ticket broker prices for mezzanine tickets can vary wildly from $199 to $500, but the tickets only cost the ticket broker less than $200, so the value proposition for mezzanine tickets is all over the place. Many Hamilton tickets have changed hands multiple times and the whole ticket market has become a speculative mess, not unlike the great Tulip bubble of 1634-1637.

Who Is The Highest Paid Broadway Actor

Right now the highest-paid performer on Broadway is Richard Chamberlain, who is playing Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music. The actor, production sources say, pulls down about $50,000 a week. That figure is a combination of a guaranteed base salary, plus a percentage of the gross box-office receipts.

What To Watch For

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda picked up Ron Chernows book Alexander Hamilton before a vacation, and while he was relaxing on the beach, he messaged his collaborator and Hamilton director Thomas Kail that he thought Hamiltons life would make a good musical.
  • Miranda initially conceived Hamilton as a record called The Hamilton Mixtape, but Kail encouraged him to make it a musical as it had theatrical scale.
  • Hamilton is not Mirandas first Broadway hit: He wrote the musical In the Heights, about a small community in New Yorks Washington Heights, which won the Tony for Best Musical and earned Miranda a Tony for Best Score. Kail directed and Blankenbuehler choreographed the production, and it also played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
  • The show has real cred in the music industry: Questlove and Black Thought of The Roots executive produced the shows original cast recording.
  • The show is full of homages to other shows. The lyric Nobody needs to know is directly plucked from Jason Robert Browns The Last Five Years. George Washingtons like Im the model of a modern major general is from Gilbert and Sullivans Pirates of Penzance. And Hamilton himself quotes Shakespeare with a line from Macbeth: “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day.”

Recommended for ages 10+ due to some strong language. Anyone 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult attending the same performance. No children under 5 allowed.
