Alaska Airlines has contracted with SkyWest to fly from Palm Springs International Airport to Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport . SkyWest will start this route from February 11th with double-daily Embraer E175 service. This route was previously expected to start from December, but Alaska pushed the start date to February.

Palm Springs has seen an explosion of air service in the last few months. Southwest Airlines arrived at the airport, Delta added a new regional flight, and Alaska also added additional flights out of Palm Springs.

This is where Alaska is testing its strength in California. Palm Springs does get some more seasonal demand, which is why the airline will be cutting this service down to a single daily service in the summer. Much like some of the earlier routes, Alaska is seriously targeting origin and destination passengers. These routes can be some of the most difficult to run, but an E175 is not terribly difficult to fill.

Alaska Ends Key Transcon Route As Of October 6

As noted by the always knowledgable Cranky Flier, Alaska Airlines will discontinue flights between New York and Los Angeles as of October 6, 2021. This wasnt a route that Alaska Airlines served until it took over Virgin America, but its a route that has been maintained ever since.

Over time weve seen frequencies in the market decrease currently Alaska Airlines is operating the flight twice daily, and the plan was for the flight to be operated once daily in the fall, but now its being cut altogether.

The market between New York and Los Angeles is arguably the most competitive in the United States, as its served by Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, and United. This is a premium market, and in that sense Alaska Airlines has been woefully uncompetitive. Alaska Airlines is the only airline flying between the two airports thats not offering flat beds.

Historically Alaska Airlines executives have stated that they were happy with this product offering. For example, earlier this year, Alaskas Chief Commercial Officer said the following about not having flat beds:

We feel really good. We are very thankful that we maintained a non-lie-flat position. We think our first class seats are spot on for the demand environment.

While Alaska may be okay with this decision, that doesnt mean the product works in all markets. And clearly the most premium route in the United States is one where it no longer does the trick.

American Airlines Helps Keep The Route Served

While Alaska Airlines is not officially flying from JFK to LAX, it has an excellent partner that does fly the route. Alaska and American Airlines are members of the oneworld alliance and have a West Coast International Alliance that sees an extensive codeshare relationship and close partnership.

American Airlines has filed up to 12 daily departures between JFK and LAX in summer 2022. All of these flights are on special Airbus A321T aircraft. These planes only have 102 seats onboard in a three-class configuration, including 10 lie-flat Flagship First class seats, 20 lie-flat Flagship Business class seats, and 72 economy class seats, of which half are extra-legroom economy seats.

Alaska Airlines does not have any lie-flat seats on its planes, nor is it interested in putting lie-flat seats on any of its planes. It offered a recliner-style premium product that worked better among lower-yield business travelers and was also a less desirable product for high-paying premium customers.

Looking at a market like San Francisco, American only has five flights per day scheduled on the route to JFK. With Alaskas five, the airline can market ten flights per day to its customers on this route, creating a better customer offering.

Out of San Diego International Airport , Alaska will be flying daily nonstop to New Yorks John F. Kennedy International Airport from April 4th, 2021.

What is interesting to note about this route is that Alaska will face competition. Alaskas one daily flight will compete with partner Americans two daily nonstops, JetBlues three, and Deltas three. JetBlue, in fact, even flies its Mint business class product between the two cities.

There are a few reasons for Alaska Airlines to jump in on this route. As a mostly West Coast carrier, the carrier has a strikingly small position in San Diego in terms of market share.

This route will be less about connections and more about Alaska Airlines holding its own with origin and destination nonstop demand. While Alaska can offer some connections out of San Diego, there are many other options for New York passengers to get to the West Coast without flying all the way to the southern end of California and connecting northwards. A Perennial Jfk Problem: Slots

A major reason for shakeups in networks at JFK usually comes down to a problem of slots. According to Mr. Catlin, slots were a large part of the calculus around ceasing the route. Speaking at the Future Flying Forum, he stated:

I think the reality of JFK is Alaska Airlines had 12 slot pairs. Only four of those slot pairs were for evening arrival and departures. And so if youre a West Coast based airline, like Alaska, the flight that people wants leaves at 8am, whether its Seattle, San Francisco, LA, and then comes back off the East Coast at 5pm. Of our 12 slot pairs, only four of those allowed those West Coast originating day turns.

The desired slot pairs Mr. Catlin is referring to largely matter to the point-to-point traveler. The other slots that Alaska Airlines has and uses are able to be offered around connecting networks and some point-to-point demand.

He further explained how Alaska had oriented its schedule for this market:

The issue that we had at Alaska Airlines pre-pandemic, is we were stretched really thin into JFK. We were operating Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles. So we had five gateways with only 12 slots, four of which were day turns. And what that meant is we had suboptimized the schedule. We didnt have a quality scheduling from any of those gateways, which left us exposed to competitors with much better slot portfolios, better holdings, more flexibility.

My Take On Alaskas Strategy Shift

I think many of us have been thinking for a long time that somethings gotta give with Alaskas presence in the New York to Los Angeles market, given the uncompetitive product. I imagine that United recently launching flights between New York and Los Angeles put the nail in the coffin for Alaskas service.

But ultimately Alaskas logic here makes sense:

  • Alaska couldnt compete in the New York to Los Angeles market, and the airline didnt want the inefficiency of having a subfleet with flat beds
  • Alaska doesnt view Los Angeles as being as much of a core market as the other airports served, or at least Alaska doesnt have as much of a competitive advantage there
  • Alaska would be be much more competitive adding service between New York and San Diego or Portland, which is what were seeing here
  • While Alaskas product also isnt competitive in the New York to San Francisco market, I suspect that route is sticking around because Alaska has more of a loyal following in the Bay Area, and the route is more integral to Alaskas overall network

I know many have speculated that Alaska is essentially handing this route over to American, given the close partnership between the two airlines . However, thats not whats happening here the two airlines are prohibited from codesharing between New York and Los Angeles, so Alaska doesnt have much revenue upside with having people booked on American.

What It Means For Alaska And Its Rivals

Alaska Airlines has experienced a solid demand recovery year to date. Its core Pacific Northwest markets have performed particularly well. This makes it an opportune time to dump underperforming routes in markets that are less significant strategically. Los Angeles certainly fits the bill, given the intensity of competition there and Alaska’s relatively low market share.

It may take a little while for the Seattle, Portland, and San Diego routes to absorb increased capacity, given that domestic travel demand hasn’t fully recovered yet. But by next summer, those routes should be solidly profitable unlike the underperforming LAX-JFK route driving incremental earnings for Alaska Air.

Alaska’s decision to exit this key market will also be a boon to other airlines that fly this route. JetBlue Airways could be a particularly big beneficiary over the next couple of years, as it offers frequent service between JFK and LAX with low fares and plenty of coach seats on each flight.

As many airlines make similar moves to retrench in non-strategic markets and double down in their core markets, it seems increasingly likely that the U.S. airline industry will be even more profitable than it was before the pandemic within a few years.
