Many Catholics across the city have been anxiously awaiting word on when it will be safe for local churches to reopen for services.
In a major announcement Thursday, the Archdiocese of New York says itâs come up with a step-by-step plan that will bring some significant changes to 300 Roman Catholic Churches in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and seven counties north of the city.
“After 10 rough weeks, itâs time for appropriately gradual reopening and staggering of services,” said Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
What You Need To Know
- Five-part “Faith Forwardâ plans begin with churches reopening for private prayer and confessions.
- Capacity for masses will be capped at 25 percent.
- Priests will be tested for coronavirus weekly, but parishioners’ temperatures will not be taken.
- Sunday Mass services will be part of the plan’s final phase, not expected for at least 6 weeks.
Dolan says the resumption of Sunday Mass, which attracts the largest crowds each week, will be the final step of what he calls “Faith Forward,” a five-part plan to fully reopen churches in the Archdiocese of New York. While full implementation will depend on the easing of state restrictions, church official expect it will take about six weeks for all five phases to be in motion.
Phase 2 include baptisms and marriages inside the church, but with a limit of 10 people.

A mosque in New York continues to be open for daily prayers despite the fact that churches all over the United States are being hit with mandatory shutdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the fact that a New York executive order bans non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason, worshippers at the Mosque of Jesus, Son of Mary in Syracuse, New York are still allowed to gather in the mosques prayer room for calls to prayer throughout the week.
About 10 worshippers in masks are allowed in at a time, though rarely do that many show up. They stand far apart from each other as they follow a prayer leader standing on a plastic-covered prayer rug,reported Syracuse.com.

However, video shows clearly that worshippers are not standing six feet apart from one another, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends.
Irfan Elahi, an asbestos abatement expert who worships at the mosque, explained that local mosque leaders had feared when the outbreak began that Muslims would panic if the mosque was closed to services.
Meanwhile, in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio has threatened to permanently shut down churches and synagogues if they do not comply with the states shelter-in-place order.

Today, Im identifying houses of worship, churches, synagogues and mosques as essential places that provide essential services. Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics as essential, but have left out churches and other houses of worship. Its not right. So Im correcting this injustice, and calling houses of worship essential. I call upon governors to allow our churches and places of worship to open right now. These are places that hold our society together, and keep our people united. The people are demanding to go to church and synagogue, go to their mosque. Many millions of Americans embrace worship as an essential part of life. The ministers, pastors, rabbis, imams and other faith leaders will make sure that their congregations are safe as they gather and pray. I know them well, they love their congregations. They love their people. They dont want anything bad to happen to them or to anybody else. The governors need to do the right thing, and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now, for this weekend. If they dont do it, I will override the governors. In America, we need more prayer, not less.

While a scramble is on to find a vaccine for the virus, another public health hazard has surfaced in New York City amid the pandemic: Vaccination rates for childhood diseases have dropped precipitously, putting children at risk, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday.
With many doctors offices closed, the number of vaccine doses administered citywide from March 23 to May 9 dropped 63 percent compared with the same period last year, Mr. de Blasio said. For children older than 2, the number of vaccine doses was down 91 percent.
Children are supposed to receive vaccinations for whooping cough, measles, chickenpox and other illnesses.
We never want to see a child threatened by respiratory disease any year, the mayor said. But if that were to happen this year, it comes with greater dangers.
He added: The pieces unfortunately start to fit together in a way that should cause parents real concern an unvaccinated child at greater threat of contracting a disease that could then put them at a greater threat of contracting Covid.
Mr. de Blasio also said at his daily briefing that the city would provide enough virus tests to nursing homes so that every resident could be tested.

Are Churches Open In New York Some Never Closed
The pandemic was a test. Rules were changing every day in our State and they were not moving in the favor of houses of worship. Would the church push forward or fold? As is the case in many areas, some adjusted and pressed on, even advancing, while others struggled or shut down.
Looking back a year later, we are thankful to have embraced the opportunity. Yes, you read that right. People were afraid. There was a lot of uncertainty. Food pantries and community support services came to a halt. Perhaps more than any time in modern history, people were seeking answers and looking to God. If there was ever a time for the church to step up, we were living through it.

Schedule for Church/Parish office: The Church wil be open Monday -Friday from 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM and from 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM. Every Friday throughout the summer, the church will open at 8:30 AM and close at 1:00 PM. The office will be open Monday – Thursday from 8:30 Am -1:30 PM. And on Fridays from 8:30 Am On Saturday the office will be open from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. The Church will be closed from 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM everday for break.
Nyc Mayor: Churches Holding Services May Be Permanently Closed Abortion Clinics Can Stay Open
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio threatened to close churches and synagogues permanently if they refuse to stop services during the coronavirus outbreak.
The Democrat mayors comments Friday sparked wide-spread outrage, and lawsuits are a near certainty if he follows through with the threat.
New York City is one of the areas hardest hit by the coronavirus. On Friday, de Blasio held a press conference about their on-going efforts to treat those infected and prevent further spread. The measures include a city-wide stay-at-home order, closure of non-essential businesses and a ban on large gatherings, including religious services.
The NYPD, fire department, buildings department everyone has been instructed that if they see worship services going on, they will go to the officials of that congregation, theyll inform them they need to stop the services and disperse, de Blasio said. If that does not happen, they will take additional action up to the point of fines and potentially closing the building permanently.
Though de Blasio said he does not take joy in proposing such extreme measures, people need to take the health crisis seriously.

Catholic churches in Brooklyn and Queens shuttered for months due to the coronavirus outbreak reopened on Tuesday with some changes including social-distancing signage and mandatory masks.
Worshipers in protective face coverings flocked to pews, at a maximum of 10 at a time, and some were even spotted donning plastic gloves as they prayed.
Diocese of Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio gave his blessing for churches, closed since March 20, to open for private prayer and devotion, with 6-feet social-distancing regulations being maintained.
DiMarzio also granted permission to start holding funerals, baptisms and weddings, also with a strict maximum of 10 people and mandatory masks. Mass is still being streamed online.
At least two houses of worship, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Kensington and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Sunset Park, plastered bright yellow police-style CAUTION tape to keep people a safe distance apart.
I know it may look like a crime scene, or a construction site … but, it is a sign that light is at the end of the tunnel! Immaculate Heart of Mary wrote on Facebook, announcing it will now be open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for private prayer.
Numerous yellow warnings also reminded parishioners to maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet.

Islam In New York And Coronavirus

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday that the city will take steps to provide for its Muslim community amid the coronavirus by distributing “over half a million meals” during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
“One of Ramadan’s most noble callings is to feed the hungry,” de Blasio said Thursday during a press briefing. “To remember to be there for those in need. And that is now harder than ever now that people can’t go to their mosques.”
He had a different tone for Christians and Jews
“We all wish that the celebrations of Easter and Passover could have been so different,” de Blasio said during the briefing.
However, many Christian and Jewish New Yorkers may find that statement unsettling, given the mayor’s harsh warning for the faithful from those religions at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in the city.
You may remember that de Blasio threatened to permanently close churches and synagogues that dared gather together in violation of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s shelter-in-place order.
This is not the first time that New York officials have appeared to give preferential treatment to Muslims in the state over Christians and Jews.
Earlier this week, TheBlaze reported on a New York mosque that remains open for daily prayers in the upstate even as the state’s current executive order broadly bans all “non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason.”

Were working with religious institutions, right now. They can have up to 10 people with strict social distancing guidelines at religious gatherings. Weve asked them to consider drive-in and parking lot services for religious ceremonies. But were going to be working with our Interfaith Advisory Council. I understand their desire to get back to religious ceremonies as soon as possible. As a former altar boy, I get it. I think it even at this time of stress, and when people are so anxious and so confused, I think those religious ceremonies can be very comforting. But we need to find out how to do it, and do it safely and do it smartly. The last thing we want to do is have a religious ceremony that winds up having more people infected. Religious ceremony, by definition, is a gathering right? Its a large number of people coming together. We know from New Rochelle, Westchester, the first hot spot, that religious ceremonies can be very dangerous. So we all want to do the same thing. The question is, how do we do it?

How A Previous Outbreak Shows The Rapid Spread Of Coronavirus
Cuomo pointed to the state’s initial outbreak as an example: A New Rochelle congregant at a local synagogue attended a series of events in late February and later became gravely ill with coronavirus.
The virus spread through the congregation, making it one of the first hotspots for COVID-19 in the nation.
It led to a quarantine of 1,000 people who may have came in contact with the initial patient, Lawrence Garbuz, and a containment zone in the neighborhood that shut down schools and businesses.
“I’m thankful that I’m alive,” Garbuz, the 50-year-old New York City lawyer said on the Today show May 11. “It’s been quite a journey.”
Cuomo and budget director Robert Mujica, who is helping to manage the reopening, said they are looking at ways houses of worship can reopen but with smaller gatherings and proper social distancing prior to phase four.
“The question is whether you could do something less than , but thats still an open question,” Mujica said Monday.
Cuomo said the situation in New Rochelle showed how rapidly the virus could spread through a congregation.
“You have a couple hundred people and you have one person who is infected, and you have a problem,” he said.

Ways We Kept Sound Of Heaven Church Open In New York In 2020
As the restrictions set in that prohibited keeping churches open in New York and around the country, we took action. Not being able to assemble in the building wasnt going to stop SOH. Here are some of the ways that kept the mission going.
Food Distribution
Many of the local food pantries were completely shut down, even those run by local faith-based organizations. There were already so many of our neighbors that were food insecure. We had to do something. With our sanctuary closed it became a mobile food pantry.
Together, we created Me & My House Mission. The concept was that we could open the opportunity for community member to help one another. We got the word out and requested local residents leave out non perishable items. We then picked up and distributed the food. We fed over 500 families every week!
Drive-in Easter Service
Early on, with Holy Week right around the corner, we all wondered are churches open in New York for Easter Sunday Services? We had our very first drive-in church service, taking precautions for social distancing. It was one of our most powerful services and a great way for us to gather safely.
Little did we know that it would be the last time in a long while for us to fellowship in a group setting, but we made it count! Apostle Johnny brought a timeley message and God gave us a beautiful day to worship outside!
