Get Comfortable With Nyc Transportation

Manhattan’s public transportation system is stellar, with taxis, buses and, of course, the subway to get you to your destination. Driving, particularly in Manhattan, is notoriously difficult. There’s a never-ending supply of pedestrians to worry about, and parking is extremely expensive. Even if you do score a good spot on the street, you’ll have to move your car the next day to comply with alternate side of the street regulations that facilitate efficient and frequent street cleaning.

If you plan to keep your car, your best option is not to drive it, but to store it. You can hang on to the vehicle for trips out of town, but you won’t need it on a daily basis. An affordable vehicle storage unit is the best option.

B& H and Adorama are both good, B& H is huge and has so much. But check hours before going there, they observe Jewish holidays that sometimes people are not aware of. They also close early on Friday and all day on Saturday.

Best Places To Shop In New York On A Budget By A New Yorker

Shopping in New York is truly a classic activity. As someone who is pretty budget-conscious, but who loves a nice statement piece, I went big when I visited my parents recently. I went to a lot of my favorite places to shop in New York as well as some new places that I hadnt yet been to.

This post may contain affliate links. Please see my disclosure for more information. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases .

Ive tried to only discuss limit this post about the best budget shopping in New York City to places that have quality items for a reasonable price, e.g. designer clothes/shoes for 50-70% off retail and stores that simply carry good quality without charging you insane amounts. I also include secondhand shopping, which is a passion of mine. I also include some money-saving tips!

Note: I focused this guide to affordable shopping in NYC on Manhattan, but youll find many of these stores in Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Bronx as well as independent boutiques worth visiting in the other boroughs. Brooklyn is a huge hotspot for vintage shopping, especially Williamsburg. You can book a shopping tour of NYC here if youre looking for a guide to show you some other great spots!

A note: If you are not living in New York, it is possible to get some of the NYC sales tax back, which will give you a discount. Most major retailers will ask for ID and have a booth available, so be sure to ask if youre making a big purchase!

Consider What You’re Willing To Forego

To make it in Manhattan, there’s a good chance that you’ll have to cut back significantly in more than one area. Many New Yorkers go without a dishwasher or elevator. Most have no personal green space at their disposal. If you love your large, amenity-packed apartment, you may want to stay put, or at least consider an apartment outside Manhattan. If you truly love living in Manhattan, however, you’ll probably find any number of little conveniences that you can do without for the sake of immersing yourself in a vibrant lifestyle that you love.

If you’re still ready to take on Manhattan after giving this lifestyle a closer look, pack your bags lightly, put those old items in storage, and get ready for a new adventure.
