1.8 Million Catchable-Size Trout to be Stocked in New York Waters
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that trout fishing season in New York State opens on Thursday, April 1. In preparation for opening day, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is stocking 1.8 million catchable trout in waters across the state. In addition to larger size fish being stocked this year, some stream reaches will receive four stockings of trout.
“Every year, thousands of New Yorkers head outside on the opening day of trout season, and 2021 should be no exception, especially with a new trout management plan in place to improve access for anglers of all ages,” Governor Cuomo said. “This is a longstanding and much-beloved tradition for generations of families, and I encourage New Yorkers to get outside, continue practicing safe behaviors like social distancing, and experience all the great fishing the Empire State has to offer.”
New York State offers a diverse set of fishing opportunities for wild and stocked trout. Under the State’s new Trout Stream Management Plan, DEC has grouped stream fishing opportunities into five distinct categories for improved management and easy-to-understand regulations to help make fishing more accessible and enjoyable for all anglers, from novice to expert.

Ny Blackfish Season Opens October 5
This Wednesday, October 5th is the day many blackfish fans have been anxiously waiting for all season long. With no winter or spring season to target tog, many anglers will cram as much blackfishing into the next ten weeks as their schedules and the weather will allow. The blackfish season in New York runs from October 5th through December 14th. The bag limit is four fish with a minimum size limit of 16 inches.
The first three or four weeks of the season will provide shore bound and small boat anglers, including kayakers, with the best opportunities for connecting with some tog as the fish will be found in shallow inshore areas before falling water temperatures drive them off to deeper water. Bay bridges, inlet jetties, rocky beaches and even places like the shallows around Fishers Island will host good numbers of tautog during October. This shallow water fishing is also a perfect time to apply light tackle and blackfish jigs tipped with crab. This highly effective approach to the blackfish game is ideal for shallow water situations and it will often out-produce standard blackfish techniques.

Saranac River Landlocked Salmon
The Saranac River is located right near the AuSable and is often overlooked. Located near the Adirondacks, its one of the most beautiful rivers on the list. The upper portion of the river has rainbows and browns. It flows from Bloomingdale to Franklin County. Drive along River Road to find the access points. Go ahead and use a traditional trout setup for these.
The lower Saranac has landlocked salmon and steelhead. Its a great spot to hit in the late fall and winter. If youre fishing this section and targeting the salmon or steelhead, be sure to use nothing lighter than a 7-weight rod. Youll need the power.
Go ahead and use BWOs, Caddis and Stoneflies. Also, in mid-summer, the terrestrials will be active so keep a few in your box. Its a great streamer river so dont be afraid to throw some Wooly Buggers and see what you can get to strike.
There are numerous hydroelectric dams along the river so its an interesting mix of warm and cold water. The wide variety of fish also make this river extremely enticing!

New Season Expands Opportunities For Trout Stream Fishing Year
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos today reminded anglers that the State’s new catch-and-release trout stream season begins on Oct. 16, expanding recreational opportunities.
“Using science, research, and public input, DEC is increasing fishing opportunities while advancing responsible trout management in order to ensure trout reach their fullest ecological and recreational potential,”Commissioner Seggos said.“New York State’s new catch-and-release season in trout streams expands opportunities for anglers so they can enjoy the State’s trout stream fishing resources year-round.”
The new catch-and-release trout stream season is a product of DEC’s Statewide Trout Stream Management Plan, developed to improve and modernize the State’s management of its trout stream fishing resources. The new season, which runs from Oct. 16 – March 31, requires anglers to use only artificial lures and immediately release trout they catch. The catch-and-release season applies to trout streams only. Fishing for trout in lakes and ponds is prohibited after Oct. 15, unless these waters are managed under a special regulation that allows for angling. Anglers should consult DEC’s regulations guide for regulations associated with lakes and ponds that harbor trout before fishing.

What Ny Anglers Need To Know About New Trout Fishing Regulations That Take Effect April 1

Anglers getting out for the opening day of the statewide trout fishing on April 1 need to be aware of a new set of fishing regulations in effect for the states inland rivers and streams.
The regulations, the result of several years of the DEC holding meetings and soliciting public comment, are reflected in the states new 10-year, trout stream management plan. They are designed to increase fishing opportunities and cater to a wider range of angler preferences when it comes to trout fishing. In addition, the changes are meant to simplify things, DEC said.
The changes are reflected in the recently released and newly formatted DEC fishing guide, which is available when one purchases their fishing license. The fishing guide is also available online on the DEC website.
Among the biggest changes is the enactment of a year-round catch-and-release regulation for streams across the state. Until now, the regular statewide trout fishing season on most inland waters began April 1 and ended Oct. 15. No longer.
In addition, the changes will have an impact on the DECs stocking practices and daily catch limits and length requirements to keep fish on various waterways.

Wiscoy Creek Great Access For The Fly Fisher
Wiscoy Creek starts in Wyoming County and flows 25 miles into the Genesee River. Its a wonderful wild brown trout stream in Western New York. There is about 13 miles of public access and five parking areas. Its one of the most accessible creeks on this list. The river generally has a gravel bottom with riffles and deep pools.
The traditional trout set-up is going to work best. Along with the browns it has wild brook trout. The Wiscoy hasnt been stocked since 1972. The upper portions near Bliss are going to be more narrow water. The middle and lower sections are wider. Try dead drifting a Bugger or nymphing with a midge. The different types of water make it an eventful day.
