Let me give you a tour of the room. Look to your right, you see a two seater sofa. Look to your left, a sink and seat behind it by the window.
The sink juts out and tucked around the corner from it is the bathroom complete with a shower.
TOUR OVER.
A note about the bathroom: The toilet flushes like the ones on the plane using very little water and a ton of suction.
They have instructions for the shower and that its best to take one sitting on the toilet since theres no room to stand comfortably. Uh, PASS on the shower.
The room is TINY. They say it can accommodate up to three people but I dont see how thats possible without ending in a murder-suicide.
My enthusiasm level dropped each hour I was on the train.
There is a little coffee and ice station in the middle of the train where I drank three cups of coffee within 3 hours.
We were starving by the time we boarded so we ate our packed lunch on the train after the 5 seconds it took us to settle in. I took a nap with the lull of the train putting me to sleep right away.
Before I knew it, it was dinnertime! Remember the two pink tickets? We took those with us to the dining car when they made the announcement for the 7PM dinner.

Auto Train Cost Tickets And Reservations
I have to admit I had a bit of trouble nailing down the price of my ticket. I first identified what I thought was a pretty good price of $89 for coach. A coach seat is one which reclines a bit but not totally flat. You can doze on it but it will be like sleeping on a plane, not very restful. I thought the price seemed reasonable but when I plugged in the date on the Amtrak site, the price shot up. After trying several different dates, I did find a $89.00 coach fare but that was waaaaay in the future. The lesson here is, a good way to save money is to book as far in the future as possible. The $89.00 does not include the price of transporting the car which is an additional $200.00.
The prices for other accommodations also depends on how far in advance you book. The closer the date, the more expensive the fare, similar to what some airlines do.
You can buy your tickets online or at the station.
From a cost perspective, it is not necessarily cheaper to take the train, although it could be. There are many factors to consider. Will you go coach or sleeper accommodation? If you drive, will you linger and take a leisurely, several-day road trip from the northeast to Florida or try to make it in one non-stop drive?

Is the Auto Train worth the price to avoid the hassle of driving? What about all that extra time it takes versus just flying?
Lets say youre a family of four, just like ours. If we assume a benchmark price of $300 per airline ticket from the D.C. area down to Orlando, Florida, thats $1,200. Throw in a rental car for roughly $400 for the week and $150 for airport parking or transportation. That makes flying to Florida around $1,750, in my rough estimate.
Now lets compare some of the other options, based on average prices of each cabin. For our Amtrak examples, we used half-priced fares for children, assuming both kids were between 2 and 12.

As I packed to move from Arlington, Va., to the Tampa Bay area in 2018, several friends asked whether I planned to use Amtraks Auto Train. The idea was intriguing. I would be a passenger with my car in another carriage, saving me from driving through the Carolinas, Georgia and northern Florida.
I opted to drive myself, arriving in St. Petersburg, Fla., after 19 hours on the road. The trip wasnt terrible, but I encountered intense summer storms. I often tracked the same route as torrential rains. Going 35 mph on the highway with low visibility led to many miles of white-knuckle tension. It wasnt a trip I wanted to repeat.
Working remotely gave me the flexibility to take a road trip this July to destinations north of D.C. This time, I decided to leave 855 miles of driving between Florida and the Washington area to Amtrak.
The most unexpected part of the 17-hour trip departure at 4 p.m. and scheduled arrival by 9 a.m. is how disoriented you can get while sleeping with pandemic protocols. I had my nose and mouth covered with a face mask, I was wearing a sleep mask to block out light, and I wore ear buds for ambient noise. A couple of times when I was jarred awake, I thought someone had put a bag over my head before I remembered where I was.

Amtrak’s Flash Sale On Its Auto Train Fares Are As Low As $29 But You’ll Have To Book Soon
Amtrak wants to transport travelers and their cars up and down the East Coast in style and at a deep discount thanks to a new flash sale that’s underway.
Travelers who book a spot on the Auto Train by Dec. 17 can snag a seat for as low as $29 or a private room for as low as $129, plus the cost of their vehicle, the company shared with Travel + Leisure this week. The deal is valid for travel northbound from Sanford, Fla. to Lorton, Va., from Dec. 17 through March 22, 2022, and the opposite direction southbound from Dec. 17 through June 30, 2022.

Those who book will not be able to travel on northbound blackout dates from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3, and southbound blackout dates from Dec. 22 to Jan. 16, Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, and Feb. 25 to March 1.
“A private room offers a one-of-a-kind travel experience that’s uniquely offered on Amtrak,” Kimberly Woods, a spokesperson for Amtrak, told T+L. “Taking the Auto Train removes vehicles from the busy I-95 corridor between Virginia and Florida. Fewer vehicles on the road mean less traffic congestion and lower air emissions for all.”
Onboard, travelers who book a roomette will receive bedding, pillows, and towels as well as a dedicated attendant, according to the company. All customers in private rooms will receive complimentary dinner as well as a continental breakfast.
Those who book a coach seat will also receive a complimentary continental breakfast before arriving at their destination.

Using A Walker Or Wheelchair On The Auto Train
The train ride is a bumpy one, jerking you around as you walk down the narrow hallways so it would be best for those using walkers to stay in the room unless absolutely necessary.
The hallways are narrow so a walker wouldnt fit through them anyway.
When making a reservation, make sure you get a room or a set on the lower level and to let them know youre traveling with a walker or a wheelchair.
There are wheelchair accessible rooms which are bigger than the standard rooms.
I believe meals can be served in the room so you wont have to break a neck trying to get to the dining car but make sure that is arranged beforehand so there arent any surprises.

Amtrak Silver Star In Winter Park Florida
6:30 pm I arrived at the small but busy Amtrak station in the heart of downtown Winter Park, Florida. Ive tried the Orlando and Kissimmee train stations and prefer the one in Winter Park. My overnight train was scheduled to arrive on time at 7:41pm.
After checking in with the station agent, he graciously stowed my bags in his office so that I could walk across the street for a coffee. I dont think the gate agent for Delta could do that.

7:20 pm-ish A five minute walk from the coffee shop on Park Avenue and I was back at the station. I could have relinquished my larger suitcase to the baggage car, but Ive done this run before and know how to safely secure my suitcase in my tiny roomette so it doesnt take up too much space.
7:30 pm The Amtrak station agent announces the arrival of our train. All the passengers in the building scatter to their designated waiting points along the platform, carefully observing not to get to close to the yellow line.
Coach passengers going to various destinations had different places to stand for their train car. Sleeping car passengers, like me, had our own area to congregate, although there were only four of us compared to at least twenty-five coach passengers.
With twenty-four station stops along the way from Florida to New York City, it was anyones guess who was going where.

Our Amtrak Train From Florida Arrives New York
7:30 pm Our train began its descent under the Hudson River which takes about 3-4 minutes in the one-way tunnel The ascent begins, your ears pop and you emerge under the bright lights of bustling Penn Station. Time to assemble my luggage. A train person had walked past my room just before arriving in New York asking if anyone would need luggage assistance. Unfortunately, I didnt hear her.
As the train slowly came to a halt, the transom opened, the stairs unfolded and an extended arm from the attendant helped all of us alight from the train. I was the last to leave and to my dismay, the Red Cap had already left with his luggage cart filled to the max. I was alone on the platform, hoping for another Red Cap to come by. Not one in sight.
Just as I was about to haul my gear myself, the conductor steps off the train and asks why I didnt already have the Red Cap to assist me. I said I didnt hear the announcement and I was waiting to see if anyone would return with a luggage cart.
He said no, they had left, but he would help me. I tried to convince him otherwiseit wasnt in his job description for sure. But he wouldnt take no for an answer. He wheeled my two heaviest bags across the platform, up the escalator, and across the expansive station. Not only did he take my bags to the curb, he also flagged down a taxi!
