HOW TO GET INTO NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY ??

New York Film Academy requires that you either take the SAT or ACT. See the table below for how New York Film Academys accepted students have performed on both tests. The Evaluation Criteria For The Best Film Schools

You should never look at rankings as factnot even those from trusted industry sources like The Hollywood Reporter. Instead, you should use these articles as a jumping off point for your own college research. Also, whenever looking at a ranking list, you should find out how the rankings were determined.

Right now, I’ll explain how I came up with this very unscientific list of top film schools. I began by restricting my search to colleges that prioritize film by only offering arts degrees or by having a specialized film school within the larger institution. Then, I took the following three criteria into consideration:

#1: Ranking. I used ranking lists from respected industry papers such as The Hollywood Reporter as a starting point for my research.

#2: On and Off-Campus Extracurricular Opportunities. Success in the entertainment industry depends a lot on who you know. In order to get to know more people , you need to have the opportunity to intern with production companies, studios, agencies, management companies, post-houses, casting offices, etc. Also, it’s important to have opportunities to make films and showcase your work in order to get your name out there and to get feedback. Does the school provide opportunities to make and screen student films?

#3: Notable Alumni. How many alumni have risen to the top of their field? If a lot have, it means the school likely provided them with the resources and/or skills needed to succeed.

Is A Degree In Film Useless

The degree itself is not useless no knowledge is useless. The degree is typically WORTHLESS meaning that it isnt very good at helping you secure work in an industry which prefers work-samples and past experience over degrees. That is the point of degrees, to open doors for you in industries which require them.

Starting off with the positives NYFA has some amazing Teachers. They are all working hard in the film and theatre industry and are very knowledgeable and inspiring. But, NYFA lacks greatness in their Management, I have found faculty, other than teachers, to be very disinterested in their jobs.

    College review by Lisa Bleich

New York Film Academy rolled out the red carpet for our visit to Los Angeles, literally, as they set up the opening cocktail party on the European set of the Universal Studios studio back lot. It was a beautiful night, perfectly lit by the lighting professor.

I had the chance to speak at length with Jean Sherlock, the CEO. He described how his father got his start in the textile industry in NY and purchased the rights to Tom Clancys book, Hunt for Red October and produced the film. He did not like the way he was treated by the Hollywood types so he started New York Film Academy , initially offering 4-week courses. Those programs were highly successful and NYFA grew into the school that it is today with campuses in NY, LA, Abu Dhabi, and Australia.

The LA campus is housed in several office buildings adjacent to Universal Studios. Students have use of the back lot for filming and creating content. They also get a 50% discount at the costume house on the lot. There are no dorms, but a housing coordinator helps students secure apartments in Burbank and acclimate to the area.

    NYFA Cinematographer

NYFA offers an Associate of Fine Arts, BFA, and MFA. There are about 900 students in LA. They also offer Advanced High School programs and pre-college summer programs.

Kanbar Institute Of Film & Television Nyu

Outside of Los Angeles, leading film schools in the US include New Yorks Kanbar Institute of Film & Television, which is a part of New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts. Located in the center of one of the worlds most culturally vibrant and renowned metropolises, Kanbar Institute of Film & Television boasts world-class alumni such as respected filmmaker Martin Scorsese and the much-praised creator of US TV series Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan.

University Of Southern California’s School Of Cinematic Arts

The 20/20 Series with William Tyler Smith

I may be biased as an alum, but you’d be hard-pressed to find any ranking list that didn’t have USC near the top. The USC School of Cinematic Arts has more connections in the entertainment industry than all of the other schools combined .

USC’s Los Angeles location helps make it a top film school. You’re not just given internship opportunities: you also have opportunities to go to industry events and more potential to network with industry professionals.

The School of Cinematic Arts is extremely selective, with only about 3% of applicants being admitted. There are separate undergraduate programs for animation, screenwriting, critical studies, media arts, interactive media, and film production.

USC is arguably one of the more “practical” schools I’ll discuss because it tries to prepare students for the changing medium by allowing students to take classes on new media.

The list of notable alumni is incredibly long , but even more impressive is that basically every Hollywood office I interned at employed at least one USC alum.

The school provides access to great off-campus internships throughout the school year and summer at places such as NBCUniversal, Lionsgate, and Pixar. Additionally, there are many opportunities to screen your work. These opportunities include the prestigious USC First Look Film Festival, which is attended by many industry professionals.

Do You Know The Truth About Nyu Film School

NYU Film School, my alma matter, has long enjoyed a reputation as a prestigious and top film school in the US and the world. In 2008 I began meeting graduates of NYU Film School here in LA. Many kids were over $70,00 in debt and had no idea how to get a PA gig let alone begin producing a movie.

The sad truth is this: NYU Film School is a poorly run, staggeringly expensive, and outdated institution that does not support its alumni. Many prestigious alumni have asked not to be associated with the school. And most surprising: within the film industry, NYU Film School grads are considered to be a joke.

NYU isnt alone in this situation. The Film School Industry includes both private non profit schools like NYU and USC, and private for profit schools like NYFA and The Art Institutes. Within the business, these places are known as Diploma Mills or Chop Shops, quickly ingesting young peoples thousands of dollars in tuition and spitting them out into the film industry with little to no preparation. These schools bring in MILLIONS of dollars in revenue annually, with little to no scrutiny.

As an NYU Grad with more than 15 years of experience on film sets, I felt strongly enough about this topic to write the book Film Fooled. The book is an in depth, course by course, dollar for dollar account of NYU Film School.
