What Writers Need To Know About The New York Times Bestseller List

Even though it retains its prestigious reputation, The New York Times Bestseller list has been the subject of much controversy. Charges of curated elitism, an overreliance on books published by the major New York publishing houses, questionable methodologies, bribery, editorial and political bias have prompted lawsuits and intense debates among authors, book publishers, and industry executives.

A 1983 lawsuit by William Peter Blatty, an American writer best known for his novel The Exorcist and 1973 movie by the same name, is a case in point.

While his book Legion sold many copies during its initial publicationenough to earn a comfortable spot for a while on the Times Bestseller listhis book appeared on the list only for one week.

Sensing bias and claiming that by it not remaining on the Timess list his sales were being hurt, Beatty took his case to Court. In Court, the Times defended itself on grounds that The list did not purport to be an objective compilation of information but instead was an editorial product. The Court sided with the Times, dismissing a $3 million lawsuit.

Think of it like this: The New York Times is the newspaper equivalent to a prestigious university and fashionable high-end clothing brand. When it comes to getting on their bestseller list, just as it is for gaining admission to, say, an Ivy League School, few get in.

Best Seller Lists Are Evolving

How to Submit an Op

Perhaps the most important thing to understand about the New York Times Bestseller list is that it is an evolving list.

It always has been and, as historical and more recent trends seem to suggest, probably always will be. To be fair, it is not only the Times.

Only as recent as 1995 did the Los Angeles Times begin to count paperbacks again on its bestseller list.

Further back in time, in 1961, the Chicago Tribune more infamously denied certain high-selling books that it considered to be sewer written by dirty fingered authors for dirty-minded readers from appearing on its Bestseller list.

Various genres and classic works of literature have historically not appeared on the New York Times Bestseller list. The recent explosion of E-books , self-published books, and audiobooks have also contributed to a more evolving list.

Florida Man Makes Announcement: Once

Former President Donald Trump arrives to announce a third run for president at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022. AP

NEW YORK Not all of his friends have abandoned him, but the harsh media reaction to former President Donald Trumps announcement that hes seeking the top office again illustrates that if he wants his old job back, he has a lot of convincing to do.

Just glance at some headlines: Trump Shocks the World by Nearly Putting Us to Sleep, said the RedState blog. Old Mar-a-Lago Man Yells at Cloud, said the American Conservative. Donnie, Time to Go Away, said Blue State Conservative. Trump 3.0 is a Changed Man. Hes a Loser, said the Washington Examiner.

No, simply read the National Review headline.

And those are conservative organizations.

Ive been aggregating stories from right-wing media since 2017, said Howard Polskin, founder of The Righting newsletter. Ive never seen Trump receive such negative coverage from these outlets. Its not only negative, some of the headlines are downright insulting to him.

Consider Wednesdays epic troll from the New York Post, the newspaper owned by conservative media magnate Rupert Murdoch that has turned sharply against Trump since last weeks midterm elections.

Florida Man Makes Announcement, was the headline running across the bottom of the front page, directing readers to an article on Page 26.

It sounded presidential, agreed analyst Joe Concha.

How To Increase Your Chances Of A New York Times Book Review

Every author has different goals. I once heard an author say that they would only count themselves successful if their book was reviewed in the New York Times. I didnt think much of it at the time, but when doing some research this week, I found out that the New York Times Book Review has an open submission policy. This means that anyone can mail them a review copy of their book for consideration.

Now, not every author would want to consider this as part of their marketing strategy, in fact, I am not currently interested, but wanted to share it with you. So, if you are interested in having your book reviewed by them, heres what you need to know.

You Dont Disclose Conflicts Of Interest

Most publications have codes of ethics and/or guidelines around conflict-of-interest disclosures. They can vary widely, so always always! err on the side of over-disclosure. The worst-case scenario is that outlet finds out you had a conflict after publication , which usually results in a correction with the disclosure and that writer possibly being blacklisted from the publication.

A travel editor at an international outlet shared this story:

Im not allowed to accept press trips, and same goes for people who write for us. I can usually tell when someone went on a press junket even if they dont disclose it, because multiple writers all pitch me the same story about the same destination all at once. Often, it was a trip I was invited on myself and had to decline.

A writer pitched me one of these stories, and I wrote her back politely giving her a heads-up about the no-press-trips rule. Her response: You must have figured out I was on a press trip because YOURE STALKING ME.

Good tip: Dont accuse editors of stalking you. And also be honest about stuff.

So now you know what not to do heres what you should do. It boils down to basically three things:

Be concise yet informative.

Very few cold pitches need to be more than, say, 10 sentences, and the best ones are often less.

Explain why anyone should care.

Get me interested to learn more, but more important, make me want to tell this story to the readers of my publication.

Show that you can pull it off.

While it may not be the best course for everyone, speaking engagements are incredible opportunities to double-down on your writing endeavors and entrepreneurial goals more broadly.

They are not only great confidence-boosters but serve as great book marketing opportunities.

Exchanging speaking fees for a bulk book purchase is especially important during the pre-order phase because it allows you not only reach a broader audience but allows you to meet the Times requirement that book purchases be in different geographic areas.

How Much Money Does A New York Times Best

Authors who make the NYT bestseller list have to sell at least 10,000 copies, so at a 10% royalty rate with a book priced at $20, theyll make at least $20,000much of that going to pay back their initial advance.

That said, many authors who make the list sell more than 10,000 books, selling even more once their book appears on that list as well. However, if the author was paid a higher advance, lets say $50,000, they would have to sell 25,000 books at a 10% royalty rate for a $20 book in order to pay back the advance.

Only then will they start to earn additional income from book sales that surpass their initial advance.

All to say, how much you make purely depends on the books list price, your royalty rate, and how much of your advance you have to pay back if youre traditionally publishing.

Minor Snowfall Forecast In Parts Of Massachusetts New York Hit By 5

Minor snow showers forecast in Mass. after heavy snowfall hits NY

There is likely no need for Massachusetts residents to bust out any shovels or sleds, but parts of the Bay State are expected to see minor snowfall later this weekend.

Northwestern parts of the state, primarily in Berkshire County and Franklin County, should see some snow showers Sunday afternoon. However, less than an inch of snow is expected to fall. Otherwise, dry weather is forecast most of Saturday and early next week, according to the meteorologists.

The forecast of minor snow showers in the commonwealth comes after parts of Michigan and New York were pummeled by heavy lake-effect snow that fell as fast as 1 to 3 inches per hour Friday. Total snowfall amounts of 1 to 2 feet were expected across many locations, reaching 2 to 4 feet east of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Historic snowfall amounts of more than 5 feet were recorded in Buffalo, New York, the National Weather Service said.

The lengthy, on-and-off snowstorm is expected to last until Sunday night, with a couple more feet of snow likely to fall southeast of Lake Ontario, according to forecasters.

You Dont Know What Your Story Is

Most editors are willing to take a chance on a great story idea, even from a new writer 75 percent of the stories I commissioned last year were from first-time New York Times writers. But we cant help you if you dont know what youre pitching.

The most common variant is this: Hi, Im a freelance writer and Im interested in covering for your section. Im glad youre interested, butwhats the story?

Another version is the super-lengthy email pitching a meandering, unfocused look, exploration, or deep dive into a topic. Im glad youve thought so much about your topic, but dont forget to think of the actual story youre telling.

Even worse: You want me to tell you what your story is.

Freelancers should always come with story ideas, said Sarah Kessler, deputy editor of Quartz at Work. I get a lot of emails that just say, Id like to be a contributor for Quartz at Work. That isnt much help.

A good safeguard against this is to write a solid, clear, powerful nut graf. Itll be just a draft after all, you wont have done all the reporting for the story yet but knowing exactly what your story is about is crucial to piquing an editors interest.
