How To Order New York Times Newspaper

Want Cheaper Digital Take The Print Paper

Where Its Made: The Times Newspaper | The Daily 360 | The New York Times

That chart I listed above also exposes what I covered the last time I wrote about this topic that if you want unlimited digital access to the New York Times , youre better off taking the print edition on a weekend or Sunday basis. Youll save a few bucks.

Got that? The New York Times will actually charge you less for unlimited digital if you just get the dead tree version and throw it away.

That doesnt say much about the real value of either the print or digital versions. They both must be overpriced if theres an option where a copy can be printed each day, tossed on my doorstep by a human being and yet cost less than an all-digital subscription.

But then again, this is from a publication that seems to think loyal readers should pay it money while non-loyal users get everything for free. Consider this from from Denise Warren, the executive vice president for the New York Times digital products group, in a recent AdAge interview:

You can sample the Times core product 10 articles a month and you can come to us through search and social. So now youll be able to sample Opinion content, but if you want to drink deeply, if youre loyal and cant get enough of it, youre going to be asked to pay.

Loyalty has little to do with all this. Those buying subscriptions are doing so, as best I can tell, for two reasons: stupidity and convenience.

Gender Discrimination In Employment

Discriminatory practices used by the paper long restricted women in appointments to editorial positions. The newspapers first general female reporter was , who described her experience afterward: In the beginning I was charged not to reveal the fact that a female had been hired. Other reporters nicknamed her Fluff and she was subjected to considerable hazing. Because of her gender, any promotion was out of the question, according to the then-managing editor. She remained on the staff for fifteen years, interrupted by World War I.

In 1935, Anne McCormick wrote to Arthur Hays Sulzberger: I hope you wont expect me to revert to womans-point-of-view stuff. Later, she interviewed major political leaders and appears to have had easier access than her colleagues. Even witnesses of her actions were unable to explain how she gained the interviews she did.Clifton Daniel said, Im sure Adenauer called her up and invited her to lunch. She never had to grovel for an appointment.

How Much Does This Matter

New York Times Birthday Newspaper

Firstly, the Times isnt ending its relationship with Apple entirely. Naturally, it will still have its own iOS app on the App Store, for example, but it also plans to continue working closely with Apple on podcasts such as The Daily.

More importantly, however, The New York Times hasnt had a significant presence on Apple News in quite some time, since it actually began pulling back on its participation over a year ago, and over the past year, the Times has only offered Apple News a few stories per day, according to a statement from Apple.

In other words, theres already been so little Times content on Apple News that you might not even notice that its gone.

However, the bigger concern isnt whether youll miss The New York Times in Apple News, but whether a decision like this on the part of such a major news publisher is going to simply be the first step in a bigger exodus from Apples News service. The Times historically marches to the beat of its own drum within the publishing industry, but this is definitely a decision that other companies are going to sit up and take notice of, and it could inspire those who are on the fence to have the courage to pull out as well.

More than 1,000 union employees at the New York Times have pledged to walk out if the news publisher does not agree to a complete and fair contract by Thursday, according to a tweet by the union on Friday.

The NYT NewsGuild has sought wages that keep up with inflation as well as to preserve and enhance health insurance and retirement benefits that were promised during hiring, according to a letter signed by 1,036 members.

We will walk out and stop work for 24 hours, on Thursday, Dec. 8, if we do not have a deal for a complete and equitable contract by then, the letter read.

The members of the union are also asking for remote work flexibility among other demands.

A NYT spokesperson said while we are disappointed that the NewsGuild is threatening to strike, we are prepared to ensure The Times continues to serve our readers without disruption, adding that the companys current wage proposal offered significant increases.

Earlier in March, a group of nearly 600 tech employees at the New York Times voted to unionize as the company faced claims it unlawfully interfered with labor organizing.

Walter Durantys Holodomor Coverage And Pulitzer

Walter Duranty, who served as its Moscow bureau chief from 1922 through 1936, has been criticized for a series of stories in 1931 on the Soviet Union and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work at that time however, he has been criticized for his denial of widespread famine, most particularly Holodomor, a famine in Soviet Ukraine in the 1930s in which he summarized Russian propaganda, and the Times published, as fact: Conditions are bad, but there is no famine.

In 2003, after the Pulitzer Board began a renewed inquiry, the Times hired , professor of Russian history at Columbia University, to review Durantys work. Von Hagen found Durantys reports to be unbalanced and uncritical, and that they far too often gave voice to Stalinistpropaganda. In comments to the press he stated, For the sake of The New York Times honor, they should take the prize away. The Ukrainian Weekly covered the efforts to rescind Durantys prize. The Times has since made a public statement and the Pulitzer committee has declined to rescind the award twice stating, Mr. Durantys 1931 work, measured by todays standards for foreign reporting, falls seriously short. In that regard, the Boards view is similar to that of The New York Times itself.

If all states got vaccinated at the fastest states rate

The Covid-19 vaccines save lives. Unlike much of the world, the United States has an overabundant supply. And yet many areas and groups of people in the United States are undervaccinated. This has led to preventable deaths throughout the country.

To quantify just how many deaths, we set out to estimate how many lives might have been saved if all states had managed to vaccinate their residents as quickly as the state with the highest vaccination rate . This provides a benchmark for what would have been possible with vaccination rates that we know are, under at least some circumstances, achievable.

The Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are extremely effective in protecting against Covid-19 deaths as well as hospitalization. We can estimate how many lives might have been saved with higher vaccination rates by looking at the number of deaths on each day and assuming that unvaccinated people died of Covid-19 at 11 times the rate of vaccinated people.

Carlos Slim Loan And Investment

On January 20, 2009, The New York Times reported that its parent company, The New York Times Company, had reached an agreement to borrow $250 million from Carlos Slim, a Mexican billionaire to help the newspaper company finance its businesses. The New York Times Company later repaid that loan ahead of schedule. Since then, Slim has bought large quantities of the companys Class A shares, which are available for purchase by the public and offer less control over the company than Class B shares, which are privately held. Slims investments in the company included large purchases of Class A shares in 2011, when he increased his stake in the company to 8.1% of Class A shares, and again in 2015, when he exercised stock optionsacquired as part of a repayment plan on the 2009 loanto purchase 15.9 million Class A shares, making him the largest shareholder. As of March 7, 2016, Slim owned 17.4% of the companys Class A shares, according to annual filings submitted by the company. While Slim is the largest shareholder in the company, his investment only allows him to vote for Class A directors, a third of the companys board. Slim continues to influence the papers direction.

Youre Spreading The Disease To Children

Just over half of children between the ages of 12 and 17 eligible for COVID-19 vaccines have been fully vaccinated in the U.S. Only 23 per cent of children between ages 5 and 11 have received their first dose, according to the CDC.

Because booster doses considered a key warrior in the fight against Omicron were just approved by the CDC for children as young as 12 last week, few children have received that third shot.

That means any risky behavior that might expose you to Omicron, such as not wearing a mask, not following social distancing guidelines, or gathering with crowds, especially indoors, will potentially expose others who may then carry the virus to their children.

Data from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows an upward trend of infections in children, which far exceeds the peak of past waves of the pandemic.

For the week ending January 6th, over 580,000 child COVID-19 cases were reported, according to numbers released Monday by the AAP.

This number is a 78 per cent increase over the 325,000 added cases reported the week ending December 30th and an almost tripling of case counts from the two weeks prior, the AAP stated.

COVID-19 Infections in children have typically been mild so far in the pandemic, but the sheer magnitude of cases caused by the very contagious Omicron variant is sending children under age 18 to hospitals in record numbers, according to data from the CDC.
